No electric shaver has been shown by the dermatology guidance here to prevent or treat folliculitis. An electric razor may be worth trying for razor bumps, but careful technique, clean equipment and an accurate diagnosis matter more than choosing foil over rotary. Here’s how to choose a shaver without expecting it to guarantee bump-free skin.
Folliculitis and razor bumps are not the same thing
Folliculitis means inflamed or infected hair follicles. Shaving can irritate or damage follicles and contribute to folliculitis. Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis, often happen when a shaved hair curves back into the skin. The two conditions can look alike, so bumps after shaving should not automatically be assumed to be one or the other. The American Academy of Dermatology’s folliculitis guidance explains the follicle condition, while its razor-bump advice addresses pseudofolliculitis.
What to look for in an electric shaver
Dermatology guidance identifies an electric razor as one option for people with razor bumps; it does not establish a best shaver, a foil-versus-rotary winner, or a model that prevents folliculitis. Choose based on whether you can use and maintain it gently, rather than on claims that a particular design cures bumps.
- Gentle use: Look for a shaver you can guide without pressing hard or repeatedly passing over the same patch.
- Easy cleaning and drying: Choose a device you can clean according to its instructions and leave dry between uses.
- Replacement parts: Check that foils or blades are available for the exact model, and follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule.
- Compatible technique: AAD advises using moisturizing shaving cream even with an electric razor when managing razor bumps. Check the device instructions to see how to use it with cream.
Neither the AAD nor the NHS guidance cited here compares specific shaver models or supports claims that foil or rotary shavers are safer. The NHS advice on ingrown hairs also suggests trying an electric razor instead of wet shaving, but that is general advice for ingrown hairs—not proof that an electric shaver treats folliculitis.

How to shave to reduce irritation
For razor-bump prevention, the AAD recommends softening skin and hair before shaving, using shaving cream or gel, shaving in the direction of hair growth, and avoiding a close shave. Its guidance also advises against stretching the skin or pressing hard, and recommends short strokes with as few passes as possible. Do not dry shave: AAD says to apply moisturizing shaving cream even when using an electric razor. See its general shaving guidance and razor-bump prevention tips.
- Soften the skin and hair before shaving, then apply moisturizing shaving cream or gel.
- Shave in the direction the hair grows. Use short, gentle strokes without stretching the skin or pushing the shaver into it.
- Limit passes over each area; do not chase a closer shave if it means repeatedly shaving irritated skin.
- After shaving, follow the device instructions for cleaning and let the shaver dry between uses.
Cleaning and replacing shaver parts
AAD’s razor-bump prevention guidance recommends cleaning an electric razor every five to seven shaves. Keep it dry between shaves, and follow the manufacturer’s directions for the particular model. AAD advises replacing foils and blades as often as the manufacturer recommends; replacement timing is not universal, so check the device manual and confirm parts fit the exact model.

When to pause shaving and seek advice
If shaving, plucking or waxing may have caused folliculitis, AAD advises stopping those hair-removal activities for 30 days. If you are unsure whether the bumps are folliculitis or razor bumps, or they persist, seek a dermatologist’s advice rather than relying on a shaver to resolve them.
