Usually, an extension cord is not a suitable long-term way to power a bidet. Extension cords are intended for temporary use, not as permanent household wiring. If the bidet’s cord cannot reach a suitable outlet, check the model’s installation manual and ask a qualified electrician about a properly located receptacle.
Can I use an extension cord for a bidet?
Do not treat an extension cord as a permanent solution. Oregon OSHA says extension cords are made for temporary use and must not be used as permanent wiring: Oregon OSHA’s extension-cord guidance. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) likewise describes cords as temporary and says a persistent need for them may indicate that more outlets are needed: ESFI extension-cord guidance.
This does not establish that every bidet has the same electrical requirements, or that every bidet is classified as a major appliance. Follow the instructions for the exact model. The U.S. Fire Administration advises plugging major appliances directly into wall outlets and warns that an extension cord used with a major appliance can overheat and start a fire; that guidance should not be used to classify all bidets: USFA: Plug Major Appliances Into a Wall Outlet.
What to do if the bidet cord cannot reach an outlet
- Check the bidet’s installation manual. Confirm the model’s power and receptacle requirements, including any instructions about cord use, outlet location, and required protection.
- Check the existing receptacle. Its location, accessibility, and protective features may affect whether it is suitable. Do not assume that a nearby outlet meets the bidet instructions or local requirements.
- Ask a qualified electrician about a permanent receptacle. A professional can assess the bathroom layout and the electrical requirements that apply at your address. Local code adoption matters, so a general online source cannot determine the correct placement for every home.
Do not hide an extension cord behind a wall or under a rug, or use it as permanent wiring. ESFI also warns against covering cords in ways that prevent heat from escaping. A cord’s length or construction does not turn a temporary cord into a permanent installation.

Why cord markings do not prove bidet compatibility
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) describes cord characteristics such as minimum wire size, strain relief, proper polarization, and continuity. Its guidance also notes outlet covers for certain indoor cords and jacketing for outdoor cords: CPSC extension-cord guidance (2015). These are general cord-quality considerations; they do not show that a particular bidet manufacturer approves continuous operation through an extension cord. Use the model’s manual and a qualified electrician’s advice rather than choosing a cord based on markings alone.
GFCI protection and bathroom outlet placement
Bathroom receptacle requirements depend on the code adopted locally and the installation details. NFPA code-development material discusses bathroom GFCI and receptacle-placement provisions, including bidet-related language, but it does not by itself establish which code edition or requirements apply at a particular address: NFPA 70 code-development information. Ask your electrician or local authority having jurisdiction to confirm the requirements for your home. A municipal checklist can be a useful starting point, but it is not a substitute for confirming local rules: City of Portland bathroom electrical checklist.
