Giant hogweed sap can cause a painful skin reaction when it gets on you and the affected skin is exposed to sunlight or artificial UV. If you suspect you have found the plant, do not touch it or try to cut it down: photograph it from a safe distance and contact your local invasive-plant or weed authority for identification and instructions.
What happens if you touch giant hogweed?
The plant’s clear sap contains phototoxic compounds. If sap gets on skin, sunlight or artificial UV can activate those compounds and trigger a reaction called phototoxic dermatitis, or phytophotodermatitis. The result can include redness, swelling, blisters, and burns; severity varies. Simply brushing against intact plant material does not mean a burn is inevitable—the concern is sap on skin followed by light exposure.
What should I do if giant hogweed sap gets on my skin?
- Wash the area promptly. Use soap and water to wash skin thoroughly, following Ontario’s public guidance.
- Keep the affected skin out of the light. Cover it and avoid sunlight; artificial UV can also activate the sap’s phototoxic substances.
- Seek medical advice if a skin reaction develops. If sap gets in an eye, flush it immediately with water and seek medical attention immediately.
These steps reflect Ontario’s giant hogweed guidance, published October 19, 2018 and updated April 15, 2026. Do not substitute a home remedy for medical care.
How do I identify giant hogweed?
Giant hogweed, Heracleum mantegazzianum, is a very large member of the carrot family. Look for several features together, and observe from a safe distance. Québec’s identification guide describes mature plants as 2–5 metres tall, with leaves up to 1.5 metres wide and 3 metres long. Its divided leaves have one to three deeply cut, pointed leaflets. Broad, rounded clusters of small white flowers can measure 25–50 centimetres across.
#1 Best Overall
- Stem: Strong and hollow, about 4–10 centimetres in diameter, with rough white hairs concentrated near the leaf stalks and prominent reddish-purple blotches.
- Leaves: Very large and divided, with deeply cut, pointed sections; the underside is smooth or slightly scaly.
- Flowers: Small white flowers in broad, rounded clusters.
These measurements describe mature plants in the Québec government guide, updated June 13, 2023; a smaller plant may not show every mature characteristic.
Distinguishing it from look-alikes
Giant hogweed can be confused with cow parsnip and other large plants in the carrot family. Québec notes that cow parsnip is native there and has smaller flower clusters, soft felt-like hairs on the stem, and soft woolly hairs underneath its leaves. Giant hogweed’s leaf underside is smooth or slightly scaly. Species and common names vary by region, so no single trait is a reliable identification.

Do not handle or collect a sample to check. Take photographs from a safe distance and send them to your local municipality or invasive-plant authority for confirmation.
What should I do if I find a suspected plant?
Leave it undisturbed. Do not mow it, weed-whack it, or attempt a casual trim: cutting can expose you to sap, and King County warns that weed-whacking does not kill the plant and can spread sap. Contact your local municipality or invasive-plant authority for identification and instructions. Rules and requirements are jurisdiction-specific; for example, King County, Washington, classifies giant hogweed as a regulated Class A noxious weed requiring eradication there. That status should not be assumed elsewhere.

Why removal needs a plan
Control is not necessarily a one-time job. The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service says its preferred approach is integrated pest management. Its pamphlet, dated June 2003 and April 2012, says that preventing seed production and rehabilitating a site for 4 to 5 years usually eradicates limited local populations. King County likewise notes that control can take several years and depends on the site.
The method should account for correct identification, the size and density of the stand, exposure risk, local rules and disposal requirements, and follow-up to prevent seed production. Québec’s government guidance describes repeated root cutting for isolated young plants and repeated cutting or root removal for mature plants. It advises bagging and sun-drying plant material rather than composting it, and avoiding seed spread. These are Québec-specific instructions, not a universal removal recipe; ask local authorities what applies at your site.

When expert help is the safer choice
Get local or professional advice for a large or mature stand, uncertain identification, sites near waterways or other restricted areas, or any proposed chemical treatment. Québec treats herbicide or chemical control as a last resort and recommends consulting an expert or specialized company. Follow local requirements and product-label directions; the cited guidance does not establish one removal method as best for every location.
If handling is explicitly recommended
Avoid handling unless local guidance says it is necessary. Québec recommends non-absorbent synthetic or waterproof clothing that covers the body, rubber gloves extending over the wrists and forearms, and eye and face protection such as a visor. Protective equipment does not eliminate risk. Afterward, remove clothing carefully, keep it separate from other items, wash it before reuse, and wash contaminated tools with soap and water.
