Best Microwaves for a Kitchen Island: 3 Microwave Drawer Options

Microwave drawers are a practical built-in option for many kitchen islands. Compare three Sharp models and check cabinet fit, ventilation, power and access before ordering.

For most kitchen islands, the best fit to consider is a built-in microwave drawer designed for undercounter installation—not a countertop microwave placed inside a cabinet. Start by confirming the cabinet cutout, ventilation, electrical supply and outlet location in the exact model’s installation manual. Sharp’s SMD2440JS and SMD2430MS explicitly list island installation; Sharp Canada’s SMD2499FSC adds convection functions but has a regional availability caveat.

What makes a microwave suitable for a kitchen island?

A microwave drawer is installed in lower cabinetry and opens like a drawer, making it one way to integrate a microwave into an island while keeping the countertop clear. Built-in models require a properly sized cabinet opening and model-specific attention to airflow and electrical access. KitchenAid notes that a countertop microwave may be more practical when cabinet space is limited or remodeling is not possible. A countertop model with a trim kit is another route to a built-in appearance, but the trim kit must be compatible with that specific microwave; a countertop microwave should not simply be enclosed in cabinetry. KitchenAid’s built-in microwave guide describes the general distinction.

The optional SKMD24U0ES pedestal is named on the product page; verify compatibility with the exact appliance configuration before purchasing it. Sharp SMD2440JS product specifications.

Check the island and installation before ordering

Do not order a built-in drawer—or cut cabinetry—based only on the appliance’s advertised width. The cutout, clearances, airflow path, power connection and access all need to work for the selected model and the actual island.

  1. Measure the cabinet opening. Compare the actual opening with the dimensions and instructions in the exact model’s installation manual before ordering or modifying cabinetry.
  2. Confirm ventilation and clearances. Follow the selected model’s airflow instructions and keep required vents unobstructed. General built-in microwave guidance is not a substitute for that model’s manual.
  3. Plan the electrical connection. Check the required supply, circuit, outlet position and cord reach against the appliance instructions and the island layout. The 120V/20A specification cited here applies only to Sharp Canada’s SMD2499FSC product page.
  4. Check loading height and access. A drawer sits low in the cabinetry. Consider whether the opening and controls will be comfortable and safe for the people who will use it.
  5. Use qualified help where required. Follow the manufacturer’s installation directions and local rules; use a qualified professional for electrical work when the instructions or regulations call for one. KitchenAid’s built-in microwave installation guide also emphasizes checking model-specific instructions.
