For marble floors, choose a clean, soft mop—a rag mop or microfiber flat mop—for damp cleaning, and use a separate dry dust mop first to pick up grit. Pair it with a neutral cleaner or a product made for natural stone. Avoid vinegar, lemon, and other acidic cleaners: they can etch or dull marble.
Which mop is best for marble floors?
A clean, soft mop is the practical choice. The Natural Stone Institute recommends a clean rag mop for floors, while the IICRC describes microfiber flat-mop systems for stone among hard flooring types. Neither source ranks mop models or establishes that one mop format is universally best.
Choose a mop head that is clean and free of grit. A microfiber flat mop is a reasonable option if you prefer a removable head; a clean rag mop is another source-supported choice. In either case, remove loose dirt before the damp pass so grit is not dragged across the stone.

What cleaner should you use on marble?
Use a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or a cleaner specifically designed for natural stone, mixed and applied according to its label. The Natural Stone Institute also identifies mild liquid dishwashing detergent with warm water as an option. LATICRETE recommends damp mopping with a diluted neutral cleaner designed for stone.

Do not use vinegar or lemon juice on marble. Marble is calcareous, and acidic products can chemically etch the surface, leaving it dull. Avoid abrasive cleaners as well.
How to mop a marble floor safely
- Remove dry grit. Sweep or use a clean, non-treated dry dust mop before damp cleaning. Entry mats can help reduce the amount of grit tracked indoors.
- Prepare a suitable solution. Dilute a neutral cleaner made for natural stone according to its label. Alternatively, use an Institute-supported mild dishwashing detergent and warm water.
- Damp mop with a clean head. Use a clean rag mop or soft microfiber flat mop. Keep the mop damp rather than saturating the floor, and do not use a dirty or gritty head.
- Rinse thoroughly. Change rinse water frequently so residue is not spread back across the floor.
- Dry the surface. Wipe with a soft cloth to help limit streaks and film.
Using too much cleaner or soap can leave residue. Follow the cleaner’s directions rather than adding extra product in an attempt to improve the result.

Protect marble between mopping
Dust mop routinely to pick up abrasive particles before they are walked across the floor. Place mats at entrances to help catch grit. Keep acidic and abrasive cleaners away from the stone, and use only products whose directions are compatible with natural stone.
Sealer can increase marble’s stain resistance, but it does not make the stone stain-proof. Ask the stone supplier or sealer manufacturer whether sealing is appropriate for your floor and how often it should be done.

When routine mopping is not enough
If you see etching, deep scratches, or a difficult stain, ordinary mopping may not resolve the problem. The Natural Stone Institute advises contacting a stone professional when a problem is too difficult to handle with routine care.
