Under-$30 air-conditioner installation parts may be possible, but current prices for the products covered here have not been verified. Check the live price—and the cost of any missing adapter or extension—before buying. These are replacement vent kits and window-sealing materials for an air conditioner you already own, not air conditioners: the U.S. Department of Energy defines a room AC as an encased unit designed for window or through-wall mounting that delivers conditioned air (DOE definition).
Choose the right kind of assembly for your AC
Portable ACs exhaust hot air through a hose that connects to a window plate. A replacement kit needs to match both the hose connection and the window opening. A window-mounted AC instead needs safe support and seals around gaps at the sides, top, and between sashes; foam, backer rod, and tape can address those gaps, but do not replace the unit’s mounting hardware.
Before comparing prices, identify whether you need a portable AC exhaust kit or materials to seal an existing window AC. A kit that does not connect to your unit, or a seal that interferes with support, is not a bargain.
Replacement portable AC window kits
The cited Perfect Aire products illustrate why hose diameter and included connectors matter. Their specifications do not establish a current retail price, so check the total cost before treating either as an under-$30 option.

Measure the connection before ordering
- Check the AC manual or existing hose for the hose diameter and the type of connection at both ends.
- Compare the kit’s AC-side adapter with the part on your unit. A matching hose diameter alone does not guarantee the coupler fits.
- Check whether the hose threads or turns clockwise or counterclockwise, where the kit specifies this.
- Measure the window opening and identify its style. Confirm the plate or board can cover the opening without leaving a route for hot exhaust air to return indoors.
- Add the cost of any missing collar, adapter, insulation, or extension to the kit price before deciding whether it fits your budget.
Window dimensions vary by manufacturer
Haier’s cited guidance describes a plate measuring 19¾ by 4¾ inches and says solid extension plates can be combined to cover a larger opening. Those dimensions apply to the described Haier setup, not every portable AC kit; measure your own opening and follow the Haier installation guidance.
De’Longhi says its cited window kit fits standard windows up to 38 inches wide; some models include two 38-inch brackets or offer a 10-inch extender. That is brand- and model-specific guidance, not a universal window-width limit. Follow the De’Longhi window-kit FAQ for the relevant model.

Seal gaps around an existing window AC
For a window-mounted unit, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America guide recommends filling gaps with cut-to-fit materials rather than relying on loose accordion panels alone. Its suggested approach is to use rigid foam panels beside the unit, close gaps between sashes with closed-cell backer rod, plug the tops of side channels, and tape the foam joints to the window, frame, and AC. - Use rigid foam panels cut to fill spaces beside the unit.
- Fit closed-cell backer rod between the window sashes.
- Fill the tops of the side channels.
- Tape joints between foam, window, frame, and AC.
Those materials seal gaps; they do not hold the air conditioner in place. Retain the unit’s top and bottom braces, secure the window with the manufacturer-supplied hardware, and follow the appliance maker’s support and installation instructions. Poorly supported window units can fall, so do not remove or alter structural supports to make a seal fit.

What the DOE’s dated cost examples mean
The DOE guide lists historical examples—not current retail prices—of $3–$10 for foam for multiple windows, about $4 for backer rod for multiple windows, and about $6 for a roll of duct tape. These figures are from the U.S. Department of Energy Building America guide published in 2013; check current local prices and the quantities needed for your window.
How to keep the total within budget
Compare the complete cost of getting a safe, sealed installation, not just the headline price of one part. Bundled exhaust kits are convenient when all the required connectors and window pieces are included; separate sealing materials can be a lower-cost route for filling gaps around a unit already installed.

- For a portable AC: prioritize a correctly fitting hose and AC-side connector, then confirm the window plate spans the opening. A kit missing an essential adapter may cost more after parts are added.
- For a window AC: price the foam, backer rod, and tape you actually need. Do not count on sealing materials to substitute for braces or manufacturer-specified window hardware.
- For either type: check live prices, shipping, and any needed extension or adapter. The cited manufacturer pages and DOE guide do not establish current under-$30 prices.
Seasonal sealing and air leakage
The DOE guide notes that air leakage through or around a window AC wastes energy and money. After cooling season, remove the unit or seal it from the inside to limit leakage through the appliance itself, following the manufacturer’s instructions for removal and storage. Foam around the perimeter alone does not address leakage through the unit.
Do not mistake an installation kit for an air conditioner
A vent kit, window plate, or foam seal supports installation of an existing AC; it does not cool a room by itself. DOE’s room-air-conditioner definition describes an encased assembly designed for window or through-wall mounting to deliver conditioned air, with a refrigeration source. The federal definition is summarized on the DOE room air conditioner page; related federal test-procedure rules were updated in 2023 (Federal Register rule).
