Betta Pool Skimmer Troubleshooting: Quick Fixes for Common Problems

Use the manual for your Betta model to diagnose a stopped, short-running, circling, or stuck pool skimmer. Start with the indicator lights, then check obstructions, water flow, and charging conditions.

If your Betta robotic pool skimmer has stopped, runs only briefly, moves in circles, or gets stuck at the pool skimmer opening, first identify the model and check its indicator lights. On Betta SE Plus and NEO, alternating red and green indicates strand mode: check the basket, cover lock, propellers, and impeller for an obstruction. Other models and control states can differ, so use the manual for your exact unit.

Start by identifying your Betta model and reading its lights

Check the model name on the unit or its manual before using a light pattern or charging instruction. Betta SE Plus and NEO share some indicator meanings, but NEO has additional pause states and different controls. Do not apply one model’s full indicator table to another.

SE Plus indicator Meaning in the SE Plus manual What to check
Flashing green Running normally with sufficient power If it is not moving as expected, look for an obstruction or a place where it is caught.
Flashing red Low battery; intermittent operation Follow the SE Plus manual’s charging guidance.
Lights off Sleep mode or a very low/discharged battery Check battery state and the manual’s wake or charging instructions.
Alternating red and green Strand mode Inspect the basket, its cover lock, propellers, and impeller for blockage.

These meanings are for SE Plus, not a universal Betta indicator chart. For NEO, consult the NEO manual for its specific states and controls. The SE Plus manual provides its corresponding indicator and troubleshooting guidance.

Betta stopped moving and seems not working. What should I do?

Check for strand mode or a physical blockage

On SE Plus and NEO, alternating red and green signals strand mode. BettaBot says the unit stops in this mode and attempts to restart every 20 minutes. Make sure the debris basket is installed and the cover lock is secured. Then inspect the propellers and impeller for hair, string, or dirt, and remove anything preventing them from moving freely.

  • Betta SE Plus automatically skims the surface of your pool, powered by solar energy and advanced Aqua Dynamics design for over 30 hours of continuous operation—even in cloudy or rainy conditions with the backup adapter charging. Note: This unit is designed for surface cleaning only and does not clean the pool bottom.
  • Quick recharge time: 5-6 hours under direct sunlight during cleaning, or just 3.5 hours using an adapter, minimizing downtime between uses.
  • Innovative shallow water safeguard design prevents the cleaner from getting stuck at pool stairs, adapting effortlessly to various pool types for reliable performance.
  • Equipped with patented twin Salt Chlorine Tolerant (SCT) motors and a large fine-mesh debris basket (200 um) for efficient removal of leaves, dust, pollen, insects, and pet hair from the pool surface.
  • Includes smart pool surface auto-cleaning, a wireless remote control for easy mode adjustments, ultrasonic radar for obstacle detection, UV-resistant coating.

Check whether the battery is low or the unit is asleep

A flashing red light indicates low battery on SE Plus and NEO. On SE Plus, lights off can mean sleep mode or a very low or discharged battery; on NEO, lights off can also mean the unit is powered off. Use the matching manual’s controls and charging directions rather than assuming the same button sequence applies to both.

If basic checks do not restore operation

Contact BettaBot with the model, purchase date, indicator pattern, and the checks you have completed. Both the SE Plus and NEO manuals state a one-year manufacturer warranty, but confirm current terms and whether your purchase is covered with BettaBot before expecting a repair or replacement.

How to stop Betta from getting stuck at the skimmer (filter pump)

Strong water flow can pull a Betta toward a pool skimmer or filter-pump opening and make it difficult to escape, according to BettaBot Support. Reduce the flow into the above-ground skimmer or shift more pump power to bottom suction if your pool setup allows it. BettaBot also recommends placing a floater or foam barrier in front of the opening; its support guidance identifies the included foam noodle bumper as a soft barrier.

Use the bumper supplied with your unit where available. If considering a generic foam noodle or floater, check that it fits your pool arrangement and does not create a different obstruction; compatibility of generic alternatives is not established in BettaBot’s guidance.

Betta is stuck on a step or shallow structure

If the unit repeatedly catches on a step or ledge, adjust its anti-stranding bars according to the manual for that model. The SE Plus manual says to press the upper button and pull the bars down. Each bar has two height positions; adjust both sides to matching positions so the unit remains balanced. NEO also has adjustable anti-stranding bars and extended front bumper rods. Follow the model-specific diagrams rather than transferring SE Plus instructions to NEO.

Betta runs briefly or moves in circles

Clean the solar panel and free the moving parts

If the unit runs for only a short time despite sufficient sunlight, the SE Plus manual identifies residue on the solar panel or a trapped propeller or impeller as possible causes. Clean the panel and check that the propellers and impeller turn freely. The NEO manual also directs owners to clean the solar panel and clear obstructions.

Circular movement can indicate that one or both propellers are trapped. Check for hair, string, or debris before concluding that the battery or drive system has failed.

Account for low sunlight and seasonal charging

Winter sunlight can reduce charging and runtime, according to the SE Plus manual. NEO has its own winter and below-68°F (20°C) instructions. Follow the guidance for your model; do not combine the temperature or charging directions into a single rule for every Betta skimmer.

Betta is not running during the daytime

Daylight alone does not rule out a low or depleted battery. Check the indicator pattern, clean the solar panel if needed, and confirm that the unit is not in a model-specific pause, sleep, or powered-off state. A flashing red light on SE Plus or NEO indicates low battery; lights off have different possible meanings by model. Use that model’s manual for charging and restart instructions.

Safe operation and maintenance

  • Do not swim while the skimmer is operating. Remove it from the pool and keep it in a cool, shaded place while the pool is in use.
  • Do not clean the unit with a pressure washer.
  • The SE Plus manual also advises keeping the unit away from children, not using it alongside other pool-cleaning devices, and not leaving it unattended in a hot, dry place out of the pool.

Minimum operating depth is model-specific. BettaBot’s FAQ lists 5 inches for Betta SE and 3.5 inches for Betta SE Plus; these figures should not be assumed to apply to NEO or every other model. See the manufacturer FAQ for its stated figures.

When to contact BettaBot

If the unit remains stopped after you have checked its model-specific indicators, cleared obstructions, secured the basket and cover lock, and followed the applicable charging instructions, contact BettaBot through its official manual and support page. Include the model, purchase date, light pattern, and whether the problem involves a step, skimmer opening, or free movement. The manufacturer’s manuals state a one-year warranty for SE Plus and NEO; verify current warranty terms directly with BettaBot.
