To choose well, compare independent performance results, the full construction, firmness and fit, then check delivery, care and return terms before buying.
What is a pocket sprung mattress?
Each spring sits in its own fabric pocket and responds to pressure independently. This can help the mattress contour to the sleeper and reduce the roll-together effect associated with interconnected spring systems. But the springs work alongside comfort layers and fillings, so construction varies from one mattress to another.
That is why a pocket sprung label—or a large advertised spring count—does not establish support, comfort or durability. Which? reports that mattresses it has tested have ranged from 111 to 826 springs per square metre, with wide variation in performance. That is a range among its tested mattresses, not a census of the current UK market.
How many pocket springs should a mattress have?
Which? test-lab experts advise looking for more than 250 springs per square metre. They give more than 640 springs as an approximate equivalent for a UK double measuring 135 × 190 cm, assuming springs reach the edges. Treat this as a benchmark, not a quality guarantee: mattress dimensions and construction differ, and density is only one factor.

Spring diameter, wire gauge and number of coils also matter. So do the materials above and around the springs. Compare model-specific performance rather than treating the headline count as a score.
Do more pocket springs mean a firmer mattress?
No reliable rule links a higher spring count to a firmer feel. Firmness depends on the complete construction, including spring design and comfort layers. Consider your preferred feel, sleeping position and whether the mattress eases pressure where your body meets the bed; there is no universally best tension.

Look for independent results on support and pressure distribution where available. Which? describes measuring spinal points and pressure, while its mattress guide cautions against relying on marketing descriptions such as “orthopaedic” or “supportive” without evidence.
What should you compare when choosing one?
- Support and pressure: Give more weight to clearly described, independent test results than to broad claims on a product page.
- Movement stability: Mattresses differ in how well they absorb a partner’s movement. Look for model-specific test results or a clearly explained home trial.
- Durability: Which? describes using a barrel roller in durability tests and notes that compressed comfort layers can reduce mattress height and, in some cases, spinal support. Neither spring count nor construction category alone proves how long a mattress will last.
- Temperature and breathability: Pocket springs can allow airflow, but fillings and comfort layers vary. Hot sleepers should check the actual materials and any model-specific temperature results rather than assuming every pocket sprung mattress sleeps cool.
- Materials: Fillings can include wool, cotton, polyester, foam, hair, coir and other fibres. Check the complete materials description if natural fillings matter; a mattress may contain only a small natural-fibre layer.
- Practical fit: Confirm the size, depth, weight, base compatibility and delivery format. Which? reports that tested pocket sprung mattresses weigh from under 20 kg to over 50 kg, so check stairways, access and who will move it into the bedroom.
How do you compare products and retailer recommendations?
Use editorial lists as starting points, not as proof that a mattress is the best choice for you. House & Garden’s guide dated 15 January 2026 named the Simba Natural Hybrid Apex its best overall, the John Lewis Ortho Pocket Collection 1400 its best value pocket sprung mattress, and the Dusk Memory Foam 4,000 Pocket Sprung Hybrid its cheap selection. Its criteria included price, delivery, materials, spring count, tension options, signs of dipping and how well the product matched its description. These were that guide’s editorial picks; product names, construction and availability may have changed.

Mumsnet’s guide, last updated 23 June 2026, listed the Dreams Cartmel 1600 Pocket Memory Mattress with 936 pocket springs, a depth of 23 cm, regular rotation and a 100-night comfort guarantee at the time of writing. That example shows why it is worth checking the actual specification rather than inferring details from a model name or marketed spring count. Its price and trial terms are time-sensitive, not verified current offers.
Which? identifies IKEA, John Lewis, Dreams, MattressOnline and Mattressman as retailers stocking pocket sprung mattresses, and mentions ranges from Silentnight, Jay-Be, Sealy, Hypnos, Sleepeezee, Relyon and Harrison Spinks. This indicates category relevance, not current stock or an endorsement. Check the exact model and its current product page before deciding.

How often should you turn a pocket sprung mattress?
Check the care instructions for the specific mattress. Some are one-sided and should not be flipped; Which? says these still need head-to-foot rotation. Turning or rotating can be physically demanding, so consider the mattress’s weight and whether you can move it safely.
What should you check about delivery, trials and returns?
Some pocket sprung mattresses arrive flat rather than rolled, and the category includes heavy models. Confirm the delivery format and whether the mattress can be carried through your home and up the stairs to the bedroom.

Which? describes online mattress trials ranging from 40 nights to a year; those are examples, not a standard or a guarantee that a particular mattress includes a trial. Before purchase, check the current terms for eligibility, hygiene conditions, collection fees, and whether the outcome is an exchange or refund.
