How to Choose U.S.-Sourced Structural Steel Beams for a Project

“Patriotic steel” is not a technical grade or universal certification. Match the beam to the plans, establish which domestic-content rule governs the project, and request the documentation and qualifications that rule requires.

“Patriotic steel” is a phrase for steel made or sourced in the United States—not a steel grade or a single certification. For a building or infrastructure project, the useful question is whether a beam meets the design specification and the project’s particular domestic-content requirements, with documentation to prove it. There is no evidence here to rank a “best” mill or confirm current beam inventory, so use the checks below to evaluate suppliers rather than relying on a slogan.

What “patriotic steel” means for a construction project

The phrase can describe U.S.-made or domestically sourced steel, but it does not identify a metallurgical grade, uniform legal category, or universal origin certification. A claim of domestic production only answers the project’s question if it meets the governing procurement clause and is supported by the documentation that clause requires.

Structural steel reaches a project through producers, distributors, fabricators, and installers. A beam’s origin, its processing and fabrication, and the qualifications of the company supplying or erecting it are related but separate considerations. AISC describes the domestic structural-steel industry as including all of these roles.

Which domestic-content rule applies?

Do not treat Buy American, Buy America, and Build America, Buy America (BABA) as interchangeable. Applicability depends on the project’s funding, procurement route, governing program, and contract language—not simply on whether a project is public.

Direct federal procurement: Buy American Act and FAR

For public building and public works construction contracts performed in the United States, FAR Subpart 25.2 generally calls for domestic construction materials, subject to exceptions. The FAR has a distinct domestic-content test for construction material wholly or predominantly made of iron or steel. Check the current FAR text and the actual contract clauses before claiming a beam complies: FAR Subpart 25.2.

Federally assisted infrastructure: Build America, Buy America

BABA establishes a domestic-content procurement preference for covered infrastructure projects receiving federal financial assistance obligated after May 14, 2022. The Department of Commerce describes covered iron and steel, manufactured products, and construction materials as required to be produced in the United States, subject to the law’s scope, implementing rules, and exceptions. The details depend on the program and project: Department of Commerce: Build America, Buy America.

Buy America is not Buy American

The Made in America Office explicitly distinguishes Buy America from Buy American. To determine which framework governs a particular project, review its funding source, solicitation, contract clauses, and relevant agency guidance. Do not infer the answer from a broad description such as “public works”: Made in America Office.

How to evaluate a structural-steel beam and its supplier

Compare proposed products against the project documents, not against a general promise that steel is American. The essential checks are specification, origin evidence, supplier qualifications, environmental data where relevant, and delivery.

1. Match the beam to the design

Confirm the specified shape, size, grade, and applicable design requirements with the project’s engineer or qualified supplier. The available information does not establish current beam dimensions, specific mill offerings, or product availability. A retail listing or generic “structural steel beam” description is not proof that a product is suitable for a building project.

2. Ask for origin documentation tied to the contract

Ask the supplier what records it can provide for the relevant beam and how those records satisfy the project’s specific domestic-content clause. A general “Made in USA” statement should not be assumed sufficient for every federal program or procurement rule. Make the requirement explicit in procurement documents and resolve documentation questions before ordering.

3. Check the fabricator or erector’s qualifications

Use the project’s required qualifications and scope of work to assess the fabricator and, where applicable, the erector. AISC’s certification search distinguishes U.S.-based and international participants; its certification programs evaluate quality systems and capacity for fabrication, manufacturing, or erection. Certification can be a useful qualification signal, but by itself it does not prove that a particular beam satisfies a domestic-origin clause: AISC Certified Company Search.

4. Compare environmental product data if emissions matter

U.S. origin alone does not establish a lower carbon footprint. When a project has Buy Clean criteria or other emissions requirements, compare the relevant environmental product declarations (EPDs) and check whether they cover the product or facility and meet the project’s stated criteria. AISC points to EPDs as a source of product- or facility-level environmental data: AISC: Buy Clean.

As of March 2026, AISC reported steel Buy Clean laws passed in California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, and New Mexico. That dated status does not establish the thresholds or implementation details for any individual law; verify the rules that apply to the project and jurisdiction.

5. Confirm availability and delivery directly

Ask the supplier to confirm inventory or mill production, regional service, fabrication scope, and delivery timing for the specified beam. Current stock, lead times, regional coverage, and supplier-specific EPDs are not established here, so no particular mill or product can be recommended on those grounds.

A practical supplier-comparison checklist

  • Specification: Does the offered beam match the required shape, size, grade, and design documents?
  • Origin: What evidence supports compliance with the procurement clause that actually governs this project?
  • Qualifications: Does the fabricator or erector hold the certification or other qualification required for its project role?
  • Environmental data: Are applicable EPDs available, and do they meet any project-specific Buy Clean criteria?
  • Delivery: Has the supplier confirmed availability, service area, fabrication, and delivery schedule?

AISC describes an industry employing more than 360,000 people at over 2,000 companies nationwide and says it represents nearly 1,000 U.S. steel companies; the page does not state a publication year for those figures. The scale of the industry does not substitute for checking a specific supplier’s documents, qualifications, or delivery commitment.

What to request before placing an order

  1. Identify the governing requirement. Confirm the project’s funding source and review the solicitation, contract clauses, and applicable agency guidance.
  2. Send the supplier the project specification. Include required beam shape, size, grade, design requirements, and any domestic-content or emissions provisions.
  3. Request evidence and qualifications. Ask for the origin documentation required by the contract, applicable EPDs, and evidence of required fabricator or erector qualifications.
  4. Get a project-specific delivery commitment. Confirm the exact product, availability, fabrication responsibilities, and delivery schedule in writing.
  5. Resolve gaps before award or order. Refer uncertain compliance or design questions to the contracting agency, project engineer, or other responsible professional rather than assuming a supplier’s marketing claim settles them.
