The best hydraulic lifting cylinder is the one that fits the load, available clearance, required travel, and lifting arrangement—not necessarily the one with the highest tonnage. Start by defining whether you need to lift, push, pull, or hold a load, then match capacity, stroke, closed height, return type, mounting, and accessories to that job. Treat the cylinder, pump, hoses, couplers, fittings, and valves as one rated system, and mechanically support a raised load as the manufacturer directs.
How to choose a hydraulic cylinder for a heavy lift
Before comparing models, establish the actual load and how it will be carried. A cylinder’s published capacity is not, by itself, proof that it is suitable for a particular setup: load distribution, center of gravity, attachment points, accessories, and the manufacturer’s instructions all matter. Do not select by maximum tonnage alone.
- Define the task. Decide whether the cylinder must lift, push, pull, or hold. A pulling cylinder needs compatible attachment points; a standard lifting cylinder is not automatically appropriate for pulling.
- Measure the geometry. Check the available installation height against the cylinder’s closed height, and compare the required travel with its stroke. Account for the space needed for the saddle, base, and connections.
- Check the load and arrangement. Confirm the manufacturer’s rating for the exact model and intended configuration. Keep the load centered and do not exceed the rating of any equipment in the setup.
- Match the hydraulic circuit. Verify compatibility and pressure ratings for the pump, hoses, couplers, fittings, and valves, as well as the exact model’s connection requirements.
- Plan how the load will be held. Decide how it will be mechanically blocked or supported after raising; do not leave a raised load supported only by hydraulic pressure.
Which cylinder configuration fits the job?
Configuration determines where a cylinder can fit and what kind of force application it can perform. Holmatro’s cylinder range includes multi-purpose, flat, short-stroke, aluminum, hollow-plunger, telescopic, and locknut configurations. Its category page gives examples and intended applications; use the exact model specifications and manual when narrowing a choice.
| Configuration | Useful when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Flat | Installation clearance is low. | Closed height, stroke, base stability, and the load’s contact surface. |
| Short-stroke | The job needs limited travel or has constrained geometry. | That the available stroke is enough for the required movement. |
| Hollow-plunger | The task involves push/pull applications. | Compatible rods, attachments, and the manufacturer’s permitted setup. |
| Aluminum | Lower cylinder handling weight is useful. | Exact model capacity, stroke, and suitability for the working arrangement. |
| Locknut | A mechanical lock is needed to hold a raised load. | The model’s locking procedure and whether it suits the planned operation. |
| Telescopic | The application calls for a different stroke-and-height arrangement. | Model-specific dimensions, capacity, and instructions. |
| Pulling cylinder | The job requires drawing objects together or precise leveling by pulling. | Rated capacity, stroke, compatible attachment points, and connection details. |
Holmatro states lifting capacities of 5–100 t for its multi-purpose range and 5–100 t for its flat range. Its aluminum range is listed at 20–150 t with stroke lengths of 50–150 mm. These are manufacturer range specifications on the Holmatro cylinder category page, accessed in 2026; they are not independent comparative test results or a recommendation for a particular load. Confirm the exact model and unit basis before applying a figure to a job.

Match pressure ratings across the whole hydraulic system
A cylinder is only one part of the load path and hydraulic circuit. The pump, hoses, couplers, fittings, valves, and accessories must be appropriate for the exact model and operating pressure. Never operate the setup above the rating of its lowest-rated component, and follow the model manual rather than assuming pressure or connection requirements are universal.
For a specific example, Enerpac’s HCL-Series instruction sheet gives a maximum working pressure of 10,150 psi [700 bar] and says hoses, fittings, and other hydraulic components in the circuit must be rated for at least that operating pressure. Those figures and requirements apply to the cited HCL series; they should not be generalized to other cylinders or equipment. Review the Enerpac HCL-Series instruction sheet and the documentation for every component in the selected system.
