Blot promptly, use as little moisture as possible, choose a treatment for the specific stain, and let the mattress dry completely before remaking the bed. No product is suitable for every mattress, and an old or deep stain may not come out completely.
Check the care label before choosing a cleaner
Mattress fabrics, covers and internal materials differ, so check the maker’s care instructions before applying liquid or using a wet-cleaning machine. BISSELL likewise advises following the mattress manufacturer’s instructions before introducing moisture: BISSELL’s mattress-cleaning guidance. If wet cleaning is not permitted or the instructions are unclear, do not assume that an upholstery cleaner or spray is safe.
Compare a cleaner against five practical details: the stain it is labeled to treat; compatibility with the mattress fabric and care instructions; how much moisture it requires; its directions for dwell time, blotting and rinsing; and how the mattress must be dried. Dr. Calum Robertson, Chemical Research Scientist at Dyson, puts the label check plainly: “Like with any stain, reading the label of the product you’re using to remove it is essential.” (Dyson)
Use a low-moisture spot-cleaning method
- Remove loose debris. If appropriate for your mattress, use an upholstery vacuum attachment. Clorox includes upholstery vacuuming in its mattress spot-treatment approach: Clorox’s mattress guidance.
- Blot fresh liquid. Press a clean, absorbent cloth onto the spot to lift liquid. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, which can spread a stain or damage a cover; Leesa advises against rubbing its mattress cover: Leesa support.
- Apply only a compatible treatment. Follow both the cleaner label and mattress-care instructions. Use a small amount rather than soaking the surface. If trying a product, test it first on a small, inconspicuous area when the care guidance permits.
- Blot as directed, then dry fully. Do not put sheets or other bedding back until the mattress is completely dry. Dyson and Clorox both advise drying after treatment.
Choose treatment by stain type
Urine and pet accidents
Blot fresh urine promptly. For a pet accident, an enzyme cleaner labeled for pet urine is the most directly relevant cleaner category; it is not a universal mattress stain remover. Follow the product directions and mattress care label, keep moisture controlled, and avoid bleach or harsh cleaners as a default. See Sleep Foundation’s urine stain guidance.

Yellowing alone does not identify the cause: it may come from perspiration or urine, which call for different treatments. Dyson notes this distinction in its mattress-cleaning advice.
Blood
Blot rather than rub, and treat the spot promptly. Leesa advises avoiding warm or hot water when cleaning blood from its mattress cover. Because guidance on specific cleaning agents varies, use only a product permitted by the mattress maker and its own label; test an inconspicuous area first if allowed. Perspiration and yellowing
For perspiration stains or odor, Dyson recommends sprinkling a few tablespoons of baking soda over the affected area, leaving it for at least five hours, then vacuuming it away. Use an upholstery attachment if suitable for your vacuum and mattress. This advice is specific to perspiration; yellowing may also be urine, so do not treat every yellow mark as sweat. Dyson’s instructions also say to let the mattress dry completely before replacing bedding.
Tea, coffee and red wine
Dyson groups these with oxidizable stains, but warns that bleach-based products can discolor mattress fabric. Do not use bleach simply because a stain is difficult: use a compatible treatment sparingly and only when the mattress instructions allow it. Dyson’s stain guidance does not establish one cleaner as safe for every mattress.

When a machine or stronger product makes sense
A portable upholstery cleaner may help only when the mattress manufacturer permits wet cleaning and the machine’s directions are compatible with the mattress. Otherwise, its added moisture may conflict with the care instructions. For dry cleanup—such as lifting baking soda after treatment—an upholstery vacuum attachment is a more targeted tool.
Clorox describes a spot-treatment sequence and names its own Urine Remover, but that is brand-specific guidance, not proof that the product suits every mattress. Check the mattress label and cleaner label before using it: Clorox’s method.

What to expect from a stain treatment
Prompt blotting and a treatment matched to the stain give you a sensible starting point, but they do not guarantee removal—especially for set-in or deep stains. Stop if the fabric’s color changes or the cover reacts poorly, and follow the mattress maker’s care instructions rather than repeating applications or adding more liquid. Dyson reported that 28% of people vacuum their mattresses regularly, citing its Global Dust Study 2022; its mattress article does not provide the study’s sample or methodology, so the figure should be understood as Dyson’s reported statistic, not a universal estimate.
