There is no single best hydraulic oil for every construction machine. Use the fluid category, viscosity grade, approvals and cleanliness requirements specified by the equipment and component manufacturers, then check that the choice suits the machine’s operating temperature, duty and site conditions. A bottle marked ISO VG 46, for example, is not automatically suitable just because that grade is common.
Start with the machine’s specification
Before comparing brands or grades, find the machine model and consult its operator or service manual. Record the required hydraulic-fluid category, ISO VG grade, named OEM approvals or performance requirements, and any cleanliness target. Check pump and seal compatibility as well as the machine-level specification; a fluid that seems appropriate by viscosity alone may still fail another requirement.
Bosch Rexroth emphasizes that “Quality and cleanliness of the hydraulic fluid are crucial to the operational safety, efficiency and service life of a system.” Its hydraulic-fluid guidance addresses application-specific selection. Chevron likewise advises matching the equipment maker’s specifications in its construction and mining guidance. If the manual is unclear, ask the equipment or component manufacturer before substituting a fluid.
Understand fluid category and viscosity grade separately
The fluid category and ISO VG number describe different properties. ISO 11158:2023 sets minimum requirements for new mineral-oil hydraulic fluids in categories HH, HL, HM, HV and HG. It is a guide for suppliers, users and equipment manufacturers—not a replacement for the machine’s instructions. ISO itself notes that the standard does not cover extreme circuit designs, temperatures or conditions. See the ISO 11158:2023 page.

ISO VG is a viscosity grade, not a complete fluid specification, quality ranking or equipment recommendation. The grade ranges below are kinematic viscosity ranges at 40 °C, as listed in Orlen Oil’s 2025 catalog using ISO 3448:
| ISO VG grade | Kinematic viscosity range at 40 °C |
|---|---|
| 32 | 28.8–35.2 mm²/s |
| 46 | 41.4–50.6 mm²/s |
| 68 | 61.2–74.8 mm²/s |
These figures explain what the grades mean; they do not identify the right grade for a particular excavator, loader or other machine. Check the manual’s grade and account for actual operating temperature and component requirements. The figures are from the Orlen Oil 2025 catalog.

When HM and HV matter
HM and HV indicate fluid performance categories; they do not replace the viscosity grade or OEM requirements. Orlen Oil describes HM as an HL fluid with improved anti-wear properties, and HV as an HM fluid with improved viscosity-temperature properties. In practical terms, HV may be relevant when a machine sees changing temperatures and its manufacturer permits that category. It is not automatically better for every system.
Choose based on operating conditions, not ambient temperature alone: fluid temperature in operation also matters. Chevron notes that a higher viscosity index helps a fluid hold its viscosity as temperatures fluctuate. Confirm the permitted category and grade in the machine documentation before choosing HM/HLP or HV/HVLP. The definitions and product examples are in the Orlen Oil catalog; the temperature-selection discussion is in Chevron’s construction and mining guidance.

- Exceptionally Long Life: Designed for 6,000-hour severe service with high oxidation resistance, providing up to 3 times the lifespan of standard fluids, minimizing the need for frequent replacements
- Anti-Wear Booster Pack: This advanced anti-wear booster pack has three times the zinc content of typical hydraulic oils, delivering enhanced protection for components under extreme service conditions
- High Viscosity Index: This fluid maintains exceptional durability across all operating conditions, preventing overheating, reducing hydraulic cavitation, ensuring seal integrity, and resisting fluid shear
- Zero Foaming: Achieves virtually zero foaming in industry-standard tests, ensuring ultra-rapid air release and preventing issues related to foam build-up for improved hydraulic system performance
- High Savings: Reduces fluid costs by 50%–80% annually compared to conventional or economy hydraulic oils, offering significant savings through extended service intervals and improved system efficiency
Consider specialty fluids only when the application calls for them
Environmental exposure or fire risk can make a specialty fluid worth evaluating, but changing fluid type requires an explicit compatibility check. Confirm suitability for the machine, pumps, seals and all stated fluid requirements, and check applicable local rules.
- Biodegradable HEES and HETG: Orlen Oil describes these categories for industrial and mobile hydraulic systems where fluid could enter the environment. Verify local environmental requirements and equipment compatibility.
- Fire-resistant HFC: Orlen Oil describes a water-glycol fluid for hazardous industrial environments. Its catalog gives an approximate maximum operating temperature of 60 °C for the listed product; that limit should not be applied to every HFC fluid.
- Other fire-resistant or environmentally acceptable fluids: Bosch Rexroth provides separate application notes for these options, underscoring the need to check compatibility rather than treating them as direct substitutes for mineral oil.
See the Orlen Oil catalog and Bosch Rexroth fluid guidance for their respective descriptions.

Compare products only after requirements are clear
Once the machine’s specification is established, compare products that meet it. Useful points to check in current technical data sheets include:
- Required ISO, DIN or OEM category and named approvals.
- ISO VG grade, plus viscosity index or temperature range where relevant.
- Compatibility with the machine’s pump, seals and other components.
- Cleanliness at delivery and available contamination-control support.
- Fluid type required by environmental exposure or fire risk.
- Availability in a package size that suits the maintenance operation.
A catalog listing is not proof of universal suitability. For example, Orlen Oil lists HYDROL HEAVY L-HV/HVLP 46 as ISO VG 46 and ISO 11158 HV / DIN 51524-3 HVLP; that identifies the listed product’s stated category and grade, not compatibility with a particular machine or marketplace availability. Check the current product data sheet and the equipment manual before purchase. Likewise, a product’s premium positioning does not by itself establish that it will extend drain intervals in every system.

Protect performance through cleanliness and condition monitoring
Correct fluid selection is only part of hydraulic-system care. Contamination and fluid condition can affect reliability, so follow the equipment maker’s cleanliness requirements and maintenance schedule. Chevron recommends fluid sampling and laboratory testing to monitor particulate accumulation in its construction and mining guidance. Use the manufacturer’s sampling method and action limits; do not infer a universal interval or cleanliness threshold from a general oil category.
When assessing a fluid change or extended service interval, rely on the machine manual and product-maker documentation for the specific system. A generic claim about longer drain intervals cannot establish a safe interval for your equipment.
