The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says homeowners can generally handle moldy areas smaller than about 10 square feet; larger areas, extensive water damage, hidden growth, or contaminated floodwater call for more caution and may need professional remediation.
Decide whether it is safe to clean the mold yourself
Before cleaning, work out where the water came from, how far it spread, which materials are affected, and whether mold may be hidden behind walls or under flooring. After a flood, do not enter or begin cleanup until electrical, structural, and contaminated-water hazards have been addressed.
EPA’s mold cleanup guidance uses about 10 square feet—roughly a 3-by-3-foot patch—as a practical cue: a smaller area can generally be handled by a homeowner, while a larger area or extensive water damage warrants consulting its remediation guidance. This is not a legal limit or a guarantee that every small cleanup is suitable for DIY.
- A small, accessible patch on a hard surface: DIY cleanup may be appropriate if the moisture source is fixed and you can protect yourself.
- A larger area, widespread water damage, or likely hidden growth: Consult EPA guidance and consider an experienced remediation contractor.
- Floodwater contamination or complex damage: Treat the job as higher risk; a household cleaner is not a substitute for professional assessment.
EPA recommends checking a contractor’s experience and references. CDC says mold testing is not generally recommended; that does not remove the need to investigate dampness or possible hidden damage.

Protect people before cleanup
Keep children out of disaster cleanup. People with allergies, asthma, COPD, immune suppression, or other underlying lung disease should not clean mold. CDC advises that people with asthma, COPD, or compromised immune systems should not stay in a moldy home or be present while it is being cleaned; see its mold cleanup recommendations.
For an appropriate small job, CDC recommends a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, protective gloves, and goggles. More extensive work, such as removing moldy drywall, may require a half-face or full-face respirator. PPE does not make a large, complex, or contaminated-water job safe for an untrained person.

Remove mold according to the material
Hard, nonporous surfaces
After stopping the leak or other moisture source, scrub mold from suitable hard surfaces with detergent and water, then dry completely. Do not paint or caulk over visible mold before cleaning and drying; a coating does not solve the moisture problem or remove the growth.
Porous materials
Mold can grow into the spaces and crevices of porous materials, making complete cleaning difficult or impossible. Moldy carpet and ceiling tile may need to be discarded. Decide item by item based on the material, how wet it became, whether it can be cleaned, and whether it can be dried fully.

Should you use bleach on mold?
EPA says chemical biocides such as chlorine bleach are not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup. Its basic method for hard surfaces is detergent and water, followed by thorough drying. Dead mold can still cause allergic reactions, so killing it without removing it is not enough.
CDC’s broader cleanup guidance includes directions for bleach use. If you follow that guidance, follow the product label and ensure ventilation. Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner. The practical point is to remove the mold and address the dampness, rather than relying on a product to kill growth while leaving it in place.

Dry the home and prevent mold from returning
Repair leaks and other water problems first; cleaning without correcting the moisture source leaves the cause in place. Dry affected surfaces and belongings completely. When electrical use is safe, fans and dehumidifiers can help remove moisture, but they do not repair leaks or remove mold already growing in building materials.
After flooding, CDC recommends drying the home and belongings as quickly as possible, ideally within 24 to 48 hours. Flood-wet items that cannot be cleaned and dried completely in that period should be taken outside. This is prompt-action guidance, not a guarantee about the exact hour mold will appear or a rule that every damp item must be discarded.

When professional remediation is the safer choice
Contact an experienced mold remediation or water-damage restoration contractor when the affected area is larger than about 10 square feet, water damage is extensive, growth may be hidden, or the job involves contaminated floodwater or complicated building damage. EPA’s remediation guidance provides further direction for larger cleanup work. If the building may be unsafe to enter, address that hazard before arranging cleanup.
