For a koi-focused pond, a practical option is to leave the deeper fish area bare and put rocks, gravel and plants on shallow shelves. That hybrid layout gives you a planted landscape without covering the whole bottom in material that can make settled waste harder to see and remove. It is a documented design approach, not proof that any substrate produces faster koi growth.

Does pond substrate improve koi growth?

The available guidance does not establish that koi grow better on one bottom material than another. Substrate is better treated as a design choice involving planting, appearance, filtration and cleaning. Water quality, pond depth, oxygenation, stocking and filtration also matter, but the cited sources do not assign a substrate-specific growth benefit to any of them.

A hybrid pond illustrates the distinction: one construction guide places rocks, gravel and plants on shelves while leaving the four-foot-deep section as bare liner. That is a worked design example, not a controlled comparison proving it is best for every pond. Construction guide

Option Where it can fit Practical trade-off
Bare liner in the deep zone A koi-focused swimming area Leaves the deep area free of rocks, gravel and aquatic plants in the documented hybrid design. The source does not establish comparative growth or health outcomes. Construction guide
Gravel in a planted bed A designated shelf or planted area Kansas State Extension describes aquatic plants planted directly in gravel beds. Koi may burrow and uproot plants, so plan for disturbance. Kansas State Extension
Potted aquatic plants A contained planting area Pots can group plants, but they do not guarantee protection: koi may burrow, eat and uproot them. Kansas State Extension
Gravel under-gravel filter A filtration system designed around gravel Gravel can serve as mechanical filter material colonized by bacteria, but under-gravel filters regularly clog with solids and require laborious cleaning. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

Use gravel for a specific purpose, not as an automatic full-floor covering

Gravel can support a deliberate planted bed or form part of an under-gravel filter. Those are different uses. For planting, keep it to the area where plants are intended to grow. For filtration, account for the maintenance burden: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension warns that under-gravel filters regularly clog with solids and are laborious to clean. Its guidance describes a separately housed up-flow biofilter as another filter design to consider; the appropriate choice depends on the pond’s overall filtration plan. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

The cited sources do not provide a comparative koi-growth ranking for sand, soil, bare concrete or other bottom materials. A guide’s use of EPDM liner is a construction example, not evidence that EPDM improves koi outcomes. Construction guide

Plan for koi disturbing plants

Kansas State Extension notes that koi burrow and may eat or uproot potted plants. You can group plants in baskets or pots and place them on a designated shelf, but containment should not be treated as a guarantee against disturbance. Choose a layout that can tolerate some disruption, or separate planting from the main koi area. Kansas State Extension

Plant cover is also a design consideration. University of Florida IFAS Extension says water-lily leaves shade the water and help reduce algal growth, and advises keeping mature plant cover to no more than two-thirds of the water surface. Select plants for the available light and garden size; this is planting guidance, not a promise of clear water or faster fish growth. UF/IFAS Extension

Make water quality and pond design part of the decision

A bottom material cannot replace a water-quality plan. Penn State Extension recommends periodic testing and describes consumer test kits and certified laboratories as options. Depending on how the pond is used, relevant parameters may include pH, alkalinity, phosphorus, hardness and iron. Penn State Extension water-testing guidance

  1. Decide which area is the main koi zone and whether it will remain bare.
  2. Set aside shelves or contained beds for plants, using gravel only where it serves that purpose.
  3. Choose filtration and waste-removal arrangements with the cleaning demands of any gravel filter in mind.
  4. Account for koi disturbing plants when choosing their location and containment.
  5. Plan pond depth, fish load and routine water testing as part of the complete pond design.
