For most homes, the best starting point is a range hood over the cooktop that exhausts outdoors. The right system is the one that captures cooking emissions effectively, delivers suitable airflow after installation, fits the duct route, and operates at an acceptable sound level. No single CFM figure is a universal answer: standards, voluntary program thresholds, and local code rules serve different purposes.
What type of kitchen exhaust system is best for my kitchen?
A hood vented directly outdoors is the practical default for a residential kitchen. EPA Indoor airPLUS Version 2 verification requirements call for demand-controlled mechanical exhaust above each cooktop or range, vented outdoors by a range hood or appliance-range hood combination. When comparing systems, look beyond the hood’s advertised airflow. Check whether its capture performance is documented, whether the installed duct route supports the intended airflow, and how loud it is at the setting you expect to use. Confirm that filters and other parts are compatible with the exact hood model, and that they can be accessed for maintenance.
Outdoor-vented range hood
A ducted hood carries cooking exhaust outside. It is the clearest fit with EPA’s general Indoor airPLUS provisions and avoids returning filtered air to the kitchen. Performance still depends on the hood, installation, and ductwork; an outdoor connection alone does not establish how well the hood captures emissions.

Recirculating range hood
A recirculating hood passes air through filters and returns it to the room rather than exhausting it outdoors. EPA’s general provisions do not treat this as equivalent to outdoor exhaust. The cited EPA multifamily exception is narrow: it allows a charcoal-filter recirculating hood only with an electric cooktop and specified continuous outdoor exhaust, and does not apply to one- and two-family homes or townhouses. How much CFM do I need for a range hood?
There is no universally correct CFM number for every kitchen. Airflow requirements depend on the applicable code or program, the type of exhaust equipment, and the installed duct system. CFM figures from different documents should not be blended into one recommendation.

For an installed system, airflow should be measured according to the manufacturer’s instructions or with an airflow-measuring device such as a flow hood or flow grid, as described by ASHRAE. A hood’s rated CFM does not by itself tell you how much air it will move in your kitchen.

Why capture efficiency matters as much as airflow
Airflow describes how much air a system moves; capture efficiency describes how effectively the hood captures cooking emissions. A hood can have a high rating yet perform poorly at capturing emissions if its design, installation, operating speed, burner position, or makeup-air location works against it.
ASHRAE’s 2025 residential ventilation handbook says rated airflow is often not achieved in real homes and identifies those installation and operating factors as influential. It also describes capture efficiency as a measure that more fully addresses a hood’s ability to improve air quality than rated airflow alone. The handbook discusses one study in which ten devices had maximum airflow at least 70% below their rated airflow; that is a finding from the cited study, not a general estimate for all hoods. When available, compare capture-efficiency results from ASTM E3087 or an equivalent method. EPA’s Gold Version 2 specifications recommend at least 70% capture efficiency under ASTM E3087 or equivalent. The cited Gold document is dated February 2023 and contains draft wording, so treat this figure as a recommendation in that document, not as a confirmed current program requirement. Duct geometry affects whether a prescriptive airflow assumption applies and whether the installed system can deliver its intended performance. For its prescriptive alternative, ASHRAE Addendum h limits the duct system to no more than 25 feet and three elbows, and specifies a rating at or above 0.25 inches water column along with compliant termination fittings. Those conditions are part of that alternative, not a general guarantee that any hood will perform well within those dimensions.

Before choosing a hood or planning a renovation, confirm the duct diameter, route length, elbow count, exterior termination fitting, and compatibility with the hood outlet. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions; a generic duct kit may not suit every outlet or route. Where the actual path is longer or more complex than the ASHRAE alternative allows, do not assume its prescriptive airflow approach applies. ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2019 Addendum h
Does a powerful range hood need makeup air?
Exhausting air from a home can require replacement air. EPA’s February 2023 Gold Version 2 specifications advise makeup air at a rate equal or similar to the exhaust when exhaust is 200 CFM or greater. The same document recommends exhaust capability above 160 CFM, and above 200 CFM for gas cooktops; these are recommendations in a document with draft wording, not universal code requirements or a confirmed current program rule. For a specific installation, check local code and have the makeup-air approach coordinated with the hood and building design. Do not treat the EPA advisory as a substitute for project-specific requirements.
How to choose and maintain a hood
- Confirm the exhaust route. Identify whether the hood will exhaust outdoors or recirculate air, and check which configuration is acceptable for your dwelling, project, and any applicable program.
- Check airflow in context. Distinguish a product’s rated CFM from installed, measured airflow, and identify whether a cited figure is a code provision, standard-table value, or program threshold.
- Look for capture data. Compare capture efficiency tested under ASTM E3087 or an equivalent method when the manufacturer provides it; do not use CFM alone as a proxy for capture.
- Map the duct path. Record duct length, elbows, diameter, outlet compatibility, and termination fitting. Use the hood’s installation manual and verify whether the design meets any prescriptive assumptions being relied on.
- Compare sound at a useful setting. Compare sound ratings at the same or similar airflow setting. Sone figures without the associated operating condition are not a like-for-like comparison.
- Verify filters and service access. Check the manual for the correct grease or charcoal filter by model and make sure filters can be removed for cleaning or replacement. The reviewed official guidance does not establish one cleaning or replacement interval for all hoods.
- Check makeup air and local rules. Ask the installer or relevant building official what applies to the project, especially when selecting a high-capacity exhaust system.
A vented range hood is the most useful starting category to compare, but no particular model can be recommended from these system-level requirements alone. Fit, performance, noise, and compatibility depend on the specific product and installation.
