Although many refrigerator instructions specify 1/4-inch outside-diameter tubing, that measurement alone does not guarantee the hose or its fittings will fit your model.
How to choose an ice maker hose
- Find the refrigerator’s model-specific instructions. Check the owner’s manual or manufacturer support page for approved tubing materials, inlet details, water-pressure requirements, and installation steps. GE, Samsung, LG, and KitchenAid do not give identical guidance, so do not choose a hose based only on a general product label.
- Identify both connection points. Compare the refrigerator inlet and household shutoff with the hose’s ends and included fittings. Confirm whether the connection calls for a compression fitting, a molded tubing end, an adapter, or another specified part.
- Choose an approved material and diameter. Use the material and outside diameter allowed by the refrigerator manufacturer. A common size is not proof of compatibility.
- Measure the full route. Measure from the shutoff to the refrigerator connection along the intended path, then allow extra tubing so you can pull the refrigerator out for service without straining the line.
- Check what the kit includes. Verify that the nuts, ferrules, adapters, and instructions match the connections you identified. If a needed fitting is not included, confirm the correct model-compatible part before installation.
What size hose does an ice maker need?
Several manufacturer instructions use 1/4-inch outside-diameter (O.D.) tubing. GE recommends its 1/4-inch O.D. SmartConnect line, Samsung describes 1/4-inch tubing, and LG’s instructions show a standard 1/4-inch tube while noting that a different connection may need an adapter. These are examples from the respective manufacturers, not a universal fit guarantee. Check the exact refrigerator model and its inlet connection before buying.
Which hose material should you choose?
There is no single material recommendation that applies to every refrigerator. Follow the guidance for your model rather than assuming that copper, plastic, or PEX is always the best choice.

How long should an ice maker hose be?
Measure the actual route and include enough slack for a service loop. GE says the line should let you move the refrigerator several feet from the wall and lists 8-foot and 15-foot line options on its support page. Those options do not replace measuring your own route. GE Appliances guidance

What fittings and water specifications matter?
Match the fittings to the connection
For the copper connection described in Samsung’s instructions, use the specified compression nut and ferrule; its plastic option uses tubing with a molded end. Avoid overtightening, and check the connections for leaks after installation. A kit that has the right tubing diameter can still be wrong if its ends do not match your refrigerator inlet and shutoff. Check cold-water pressure for your model
LG USA Support lists a cold-water pressure range of 20–120 psi in its guidance dated September 5, 2026. This is LG guidance, not a pressure specification established here for all refrigerators. Check your own model’s manual before connecting the line. LG USA Support water-line instructions
Installation checks before using the ice maker
- Follow the exact refrigerator manual and applicable local plumbing codes.
- Use a cold-water supply and any pressure limits specified for your model.
- Flush a new line if the model’s instructions call for it.
- Keep enough slack to move the refrigerator without pulling or kinking the line.
- Inspect every connection for leaks after installation, and do not overtighten fittings.
- If the refrigerator will be used before the water line is connected, LG advises turning the icemaker off.
- If connecting the refrigerator requires changing the household water supply, LG advises consulting a qualified plumber.

What to verify before buying
- Refrigerator make and model, and its specified inlet connection
- Household shutoff connection and the hose end it requires
- Approved tubing material and required outside diameter
- Measured route length plus room for a service loop
- Included fittings, adapters, and installation directions
A search for a “refrigerator ice maker water line kit 1/4 inch” may locate a suitable product category, but the label does not establish that a particular kit fits your refrigerator or home plumbing. Verify each item above against the appliance instructions and the connections on site.
