The right grill press depends on what you cook, the cooking surface you use, and the model’s size, weight, handle, material, and care instructions. Rectangular presses can suit bacon and sandwiches; round presses can suit burger patties and tortillas. Those are practical starting points, not universal rules. The manufacturers below document several distinct designs and uses, but the available specifications do not establish a single best press in a controlled head-to-head comparison.
What a grill press does
A grill press is a weighted tool placed on food to hold it against a hot grill, griddle, or skillet. It is an accessory, not a cooker. Makers describe using presses with foods such as bacon, burgers, steaks, sandwiches, grilled cheese, and quesadillas. Some recommend preheating the press so it also contributes heat from above; Napoleon gives that advice for its Cast Iron Chef’s Press.
How to choose a press
Match the face to the food and surface
Start with the food you press most often and the usable cooking area. A rectangular face offers more linear coverage and can be convenient for bacon strips or sandwiches; a round face can align naturally with round patties or tortillas. These are task-based suggestions from an editorial comparison, not a rule that one shape performs better in every setup. Measure your griddle or grill area and consider whether the press will fit without crowding other food.
Compare dimensions and weight by exact model
Dimensions affect how much food a press can cover, while weight is a model-specific attribute to compare against your intended use. Lodge lists its 8.25-inch flat Grill Press at 3.95 pounds; Norpro lists its 1400 Grill/Bacon Press, measuring 6.75 by 4 inches, at 1.88 pounds. These are specifications for different products, not results from a like-for-like performance test. Check the manufacturer’s listing for the precise version: Lodge also presents a 6.75-inch variant.

A low-maintenance workhorse that stays kitchen-ready without the hassle of special cleaning routines.
Choose material and handle deliberately
Cast iron is used in several of the models below, while YETI offers a stainless-steel option. The product pages establish that both materials are available, but do not provide a controlled performance comparison between them. Handle design also varies: Norpro identifies a wooden handle, and All-Clad describes a riveted handle. Do not assume a handle stays cool under every cooking condition; follow the maker’s directions and take care around a hot press.
Check care and warranty details
Care instructions vary by product and material. Lodge says to hand wash, dry, and oil its press. Norpro says to hand wash, rinse thoroughly, dry with a paper towel, and never soak its cast-iron press. Follow the instructions for the exact model rather than applying one maker’s directions to another press. All-Clad lists a limited lifetime cookware/accessory warranty for its press; Cuisinart lists a one-year warranty for its XL model.

Which type fits your cooking?
For bacon and sandwiches
Look at rectangular models that cover the food you typically cook. Norpro explicitly lists bacon and grilled sandwiches among its uses, while Lodge lists bacon and grilled cheese. Compare their face dimensions with your cooking surface and the portions you make; neither maker’s use list guarantees a particular result.

For burgers, steaks, and griddle cooking
Norpro describes its press as a weight for hamburgers and steaks, and YETI names smashed patties and cuts of meat. Napoleon also lists burgers. A round face may align well with a patty, but the actual fit depends on patty size and available space. For a griddle or skillet, verify the model’s dimensions and any compatibility limits before use.
For a larger coverage area
All-Clad markets a 10-inch cast-iron model, and Cuisinart lists a 10-by-10-inch surface for its XL press. Their listed weights differ: 4.32 pounds for All-Clad and 5.1 pounds for Cuisinart. Consider whether that coverage suits your cooking area and whether the model’s weight is appropriate for your intended task; the published figures alone do not prove a cooking advantage.
