Gas Furnace and Central AC Systems: How to Choose the Right Combination for Your Home

A gas furnace and central AC must be selected as a matched, home-specific HVAC system. Learn which ratings to compare and what a sound installation proposal should document.

A gas furnace and central air conditioner are separate pieces of equipment selected and installed together for a particular home—not a universal, off-the-shelf “combo.” The best proposal is the one that documents the home’s heating and cooling needs, specifies a compatible equipment match, and includes sound ductwork evaluation and installation commissioning. Compare proposals by those measures, not brand name alone.

What “gas furnace and air conditioner combo” means

A residential gas furnace heats the home; a central air conditioner cools it. They may share ductwork and controls, but their capacities and efficiency ratings address different jobs. A contractor must select equipment that fits the home and works with its distribution system. A furnace or AC advertised online is not automatically compatible with a particular house.

This guide focuses on U.S. homes considering a gas furnace paired with central AC. No single brand or model can be named as best without verified matched-system specifications and home-specific installation information.

Compare the ratings that apply to each component

Component Rating What to verify
Gas furnace AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) The AFUE of the exact furnace model proposed, and whether its certification criteria apply to your region.
Central air conditioner SEER2 (seasonal energy efficiency ratio 2) The SEER2 rating for the exact AC equipment combination, confirmed in recognized certification records.

AFUE describes how efficiently a furnace converts fuel into heat over a season; SEER2 is a cooling-efficiency measure. They are not interchangeable, and a high rating in one does not establish the performance of the other component. The U.S. Department of Energy says SEER2 took effect January 1, 2023. Its current consumer guidance references the AHRI 210/240-2024 (I-P) test procedure and says the amended M1 procedure becomes mandatory for product testing starting July 7, 2025. Check regional furnace criteria

ENERGY STAR furnace thresholds are not one nationwide number. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) December 2024 guidance uses 95% AFUE for a Northern ENERGY STAR example and 90% for a Southern example. Treat these as regional examples from that guidance, not a universal rule: check the current certification for your location and the exact proposed model. DOE FEMP residential furnace guidance

Verify the proposed equipment match

Ask the contractor to identify the furnace and AC model numbers and provide the certified rating for the specific equipment combination. A general product-family rating or a quoted efficiency without model details is not enough to verify the proposal.

Judge the proposal by design and installation, not ratings alone

Efficiency labels cannot compensate for poor sizing, unsuitable ducts or improper startup. DOE identifies oversizing, poorly designed distribution, improper refrigerant charging and leaky ducts as causes of efficiency loss, discomfort and shorter equipment life. Request a written explanation of the sizing basis, duct evaluation, equipment match and startup or commissioning work. DOE FEMP furnace guidance and DOE FEMP central AC guidance

Questions to ask before accepting a quote

  • How was capacity determined? Ask for the documented heating and cooling load basis, not a size inferred from floor area alone. The proposal should show furnace output and AC capacity and explain how each suits the home.
  • Will the existing ducts work? Ask for an assessment of duct condition, leakage and airflow, plus any repairs or modifications included in the price.
  • Are the components and controls compatible? Have the contractor identify the exact matched equipment, staging or modulation features, thermostat compatibility and any zoning requirements.
  • What is included at startup? Ask how the contractor will verify airflow and refrigerant charge, address furnace venting and combustion air, and document commissioning.
  • Who will perform the work? Confirm that the installer has the credentials required in your jurisdiction and clarify which work, permits and inspections are included.

Compare comfort, climate and operating costs

The right combination depends on local conditions and the home’s needs as well as the equipment label. Compare humidity management, sound, room-to-room air distribution, controls and zoning alongside ratings. Ask whether the duct layout can deliver the required airflow and whether the proposed thermostat works with the system’s staging or modulation.

Use local fuel and electricity prices, expected usage, climate, maintenance needs and the full installed price when comparing operating costs. DOE FEMP’s published savings figures are modeled comparisons, not promises of household savings:

DOE FEMP December 2024 example Modeled lifetime energy-cost savings Key assumptions
Northern furnace: 95% AFUE ENERGY STAR example versus an 80% AFUE less-efficient model $1,345 in 2023 dollars 70,000 Btu/h output, 21-year furnace life and natural gas at $0.961/therm, the federal-facility average as of July 2024. DOE FEMP furnace guidance
Central AC: 15.2 SEER2 ENERGY STAR example versus a 13.4 SEER2 less-efficient comparator Hot-humid/Southeast: $1,853; hot-dry/Southwest: $869; North: $927, all in 2023 dollars Region-specific DOE cooling-hour and lifetime assumptions and electricity at 11¢/kWh. Product levels reflect December 2024 criteria and the model available then. DOE FEMP central AC guidance

FEMP’s examples use federal-facility energy-price assumptions; actual household results vary with local rates, weather, load, use, installed cost and maintenance. Use the figures to understand how modeled comparisons differ by region, not to forecast your bill.

Compare the full installed proposal

Request itemized bids that make scope and assumptions visible. A lower equipment price may not be a lower-cost installation if it excludes duct repairs, venting work or commissioning. Compare proposals on the same basis:

  • Exact furnace and AC model numbers, certified AFUE and SEER2, and equipment-match documentation.
  • Capacity and sizing rationale, duct findings, and any airflow or distribution improvements.
  • Equipment, labor, permits, venting, controls, removal and disposal, and startup or commissioning scope.
  • Warranty terms, including what is covered and any maintenance conditions.
  • Estimated operating costs calculated with your local energy prices and stated usage assumptions; list rebates only after confirming current eligibility and availability.

Maintain the system for dependable performance

DOE recommends regular maintenance, including replacing filters, and identifies programmable thermostats as an efficiency practice. Follow the installed equipment’s specified filter size and type and its maintenance schedule; do not assume a filter or service interval is suitable without checking the system requirements.
