Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best freezer for your household is the one that fits the food you actually store, the space you have, and your running-cost expectations. Chest models generally use less energy and suit bulk storage; uprights make shelves and frequent access easier. Compare each model’s EnergyGuide label rather than choosing by freezer type or a category-wide average.
How to choose a freezer that fits your budget
A low purchase price is only one part of the cost. Consider the freezer’s price, available floor space, capacity you will use, and the model’s estimated energy use. A larger freezer generally consumes more energy, and unused capacity can waste both space and energy. Choose capacity based on your household’s actual storage needs.
Current prices, stock, reliability, and model-level performance are not established here, so there is no defensible single model winner or budget-specific shortlist. For a particular model, use its current product listing and EnergyGuide label, then compare the full cost and fit.
Chest or upright: which type suits your home?
| Consideration | Chest freezer | Upright freezer |
|---|---|---|
| Energy use | Generally more efficient: chest models typically have more insulation and lose less cold air when opened. (U.S. Department of Energy FEMP: energy-efficient products guidance) | Generally less efficient than chest models, though efficiency varies by model. Compare the EnergyGuide label. (U.S. Department of Energy FEMP: energy-efficient products guidance) |
| Organization and access | Bulk storage can work well, but food may be less visible or accessible depending on the layout. | Front door and shelves can make organization and frequent access easier. |
| Space | Usually needs more floor space. | Vertical storage may suit a tighter footprint; check the actual dimensions and door clearance. |
Neither configuration is best for everyone. Measure the installation area, including clearance to open the door and space for air circulation, and consider how often you will retrieve food. If bulk storage and lower energy use are priorities and you can spare the floor area, start with chest models. If organized shelves and easier access matter more, consider an upright.

Compare energy use and running cost by model
Look for the yellow EnergyGuide label on the specific freezer. It reports estimated annual electricity use and operating cost, allowing comparisons between similar models. ENERGY STAR advises: “Use this label to determine the model’s energy use, compare the energy use of similar models, and estimate annual operating costs.” The estimate is not a guaranteed household bill: actual cost depends on electricity rates and use conditions. (ENERGY STAR: freezer guidance)
ENERGY STAR says certified freezers are at least 10% more energy efficient than the minimum federal standard. Its current guidance lists 215 kWh and about $30 per year for an ENERGY STAR certified chest freezer, and 395 kWh and about $60 per year for an ENERGY STAR certified upright freezer. These are category figures, not a prediction for a particular model or home; use the model’s EnergyGuide label for a closer comparison. (ENERGY STAR: freezer guidance)

For another illustration, the U.S. Department of Energy FEMP’s 2023 guidance modeled a 16.6-ft³ automatic-defrost upright freezer using 2022-dollar assumptions: federal-facility electricity at $0.099/kWh and a 21.7-year life, with cited DOE/NIST assumptions. In that model, annual energy use was 438 kWh at the ENERGY STAR level, 435 kWh for the best-available model, and 486 kWh for the less-efficient case; modeled annual costs were $43.39, $43.08, and $48, respectively. The modeled lifetime savings were $66 for the ENERGY STAR case and $70 for the best-available case. These figures are a specified comparison, not a forecast for a typical household. Check certification and local incentives
ENERGY STAR certification can help narrow the field, but still compare dimensions, capacity, defrost style, features, and EnergyGuide figures for the exact model. The ENERGY STAR product finder lists certified chest, compact, and upright freezers; listings can change, so confirm the model’s current specifications.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set and check the freezer temperature
Set the freezer between -5°F and 0°F, according to U.S. Department of Energy FEMP guidance. Temperatures colder than that use energy without added food-storage benefit; a setting above 0°F shortens food storage time. ENERGY STAR recommends 0°F. Because few residential freezers display their actual interior temperature, check it with an inexpensive appliance thermometer.
