Best Exercise Balls for Office Chairs? What the Evidence Says About Posture and Core Strength

Exercise balls are useful for exercise, not proven all-day office chairs. See what workplace guidance and studies say about posture, core strength, safety, and sizing.

Short answer: An exercise ball can be useful for exercise, but it is not a proven way to improve posture or strengthen your core while you work. Workplace guidance advises against replacing a supportive, adjustable office chair with a ball. If you want one for movement or occasional sitting, choose the correct size for that specific model and use it with care.

Are exercise balls good office-chair replacements?

No. A stability ball is exercise equipment, not a proven ergonomic task chair. UCLA Health says, “Exercise balls or ball chairs are not recommended as a replacement for a good ergonomic office chair,” particularly because they lack back and lumbar support. UCLA Health’s workplace ergonomics guidance makes the distinction clear. WorkSafe Victoria’s position is similarly direct: “Fitness balls are not suitable as chairs” for standard workplace use. WorkSafe Victoria cites fatigue, loss of upright posture over time, and inadequate support for the buttocks and thighs among the concerns.

That does not mean a ball has no place in a workplace. Using one for exercise, stretching, or a brief change of position is a different choice from sitting on it through a full workday. A supportive task chair remains the more appropriate default for sustained desk work.

Does sitting on a ball improve posture or build core strength?

The evidence does not establish that passive or prolonged ball sitting reliably improves posture or strengthens the core. The idea that a less stable seat must produce a useful training effect is too simple: added movement or muscle activity is not automatically better support, comfort, or lasting strength.

ProBody Pilates Yoga Ball - Gym Grade Exercise Ball (Blue, 65cm)
  • PICK YOUR SIZE FOR YOUR HEIGHT — 45 cm for kids and shorter PT users / 55 cm for 4'4"-5'1" / 65 cm for 5'1"-5'8" (most popular) / 75 cm for 5'8"-6'3" / 85 cm for 6'3"+. The workout ball is intentionally unstable, so your deep core, lower back, and pelvic floor work continuously to keep you upright — turning a desk sit, a lumbar PT homework set, or a labor-prep hip rotation into real strengthening.
  • GYM-GRADE ANTI-BURST PVC, DUAL-ACTION PUMP INCLUDED — Thick non-toxic PVC, tested to 880 lbs; if punctured, it deflates slowly rather than bursting — the safety pattern PT clinics actually look for. The box includes the swiss ball, a dual-action pump, two ball plugs, a stopper remover, and a printed exercise guide. Inflate to 80-90% the first time, let the ball settle 24 hours, then top it up.
  • RECOMMENDED BY OBSTETRICIANS, MIDWIVES, DOULAS & PHYSICAL THERAPISTS — Expecting and postpartum mothers reach for it as a pregnancy ball, birthing ball, and labor ball for gentle hip rotation and pelvic mobility (always confirm with your OB or midwife). Work-from-home professionals swap their desk chair for active sitting on a yoga ball chair or exercise ball chair. Older adults and lumbar-rehab patients use it for guided PT homework between clinic visits.
  • AT YOUR DESK, IN THE CLINIC, OR AT THE BIRTHING CENTER — Use it through an 8-hour active-sitting workday, the third trimester and early labor, daily 10-minute core sessions, or PT homework between visits. Often called a gym ball, fitness ball, yoga ball large, physio ball, physical therapy ball, or fitball. Pairs naturally with a yoga mat, foam roller, resistance bands, and a peanut ball for labor — add the ProBody Pilates Ring Set for a full low-impact circuit.
  • OUR 12-MONTH PROMISE — The ball ships in your chosen size (45, 55, 65, 75, or 85 cm) and color (9 options), with dual-action pump, two ball plugs, stopper remover, and printed exercise guide. Muscle activity during exercise is not the same as a workday benefit

In a 2015 laboratory study, 16 participants performed four pelvic-rotation exercises while seated on either a stability ball or a dynamic office chair. Trunk muscle activity was generally comparable on the two devices, although one measure of peak right external-oblique activity was higher on the ball. The study examined deliberate exercises, not passive sitting or long-term strength gains. Holmes and colleagues, Human Factors, 2015.

Typing studies found trade-offs, not a posture fix

A 2006 comparison asked 14 participants to do one hour of computer work on a ball and on an office chair. Participants reported greater discomfort on the ball, and thoracic erector-spinae activity increased; the authors concluded that prolonged ball sitting may not be advantageous. Gregory, Dunk, and Callaghan, Human Factors, 2006.

In a separate 2008 one-hour typing study of 10 women, ball sitting was associated with 33% more trunk motion and 66% more variation in lumbar muscle activity than chair sitting. The study also measured 38% higher fifth-percentile lumbar activity, 78% higher average lumbar activity, and increased spinal shrinkage. These are results from a small, female-only sample under the study’s conditions—not universal effects for everyone who sits on a ball. They also do not show that the measured changes improve posture or strengthen the core. McGill and colleagues, Applied Ergonomics, 2008.

A 2013 Veterans Health Administration workplace crossover evaluation reported that ball users perceived improvements in posture and some energy or balance measures. Those self-reports are not proof of objective posture correction, core strengthening, or lasting health benefits. A review by Lowe and colleagues, hosted by NIOSH in 2015, likewise judged the available evidence insufficient to support stability balls as a general workplace wellness recommendation. It found that biomechanical studies did not confirm the intended trunk activation and that energy-expenditure studies showed small, if any, increases. NIOSH-hosted review, 2015.

What are the practical risks at a desk?

A ball can move unpredictably during ordinary workstation tasks. WorkSafe Victoria flags the risk of falling while mounting or dismounting and while reaching, as well as fatigue and reduced support. In a 2022 laboratory experiment with 16 participants doing reaching tasks, perceived fall risk was significantly greater on a stability ball than on a backless, armless office chair—even when participants used a wider foot stance. This limited study does not mean every brief use causes a fall, but it supports caution when reaching or handling items at a workstation. Applied Ergonomics, 2022.

  • Keep a supportive chair for routine, sustained desk work.
  • Do not treat the ball’s instability as a substitute for back or lumbar support.
  • Avoid reaching for items or moving around while seated on the ball; stand up first when practical.
  • Stop using it if you feel fatigued, uncomfortable, or unsteady.

How do you choose the right exercise-ball size?

There is no universal height-to-ball-size conversion. Manufacturers’ suggested height bands differ, so follow the chart for the exact model you are buying and check the seated fit rather than relying on a chart from another brand.

Check fit and specifications for the exact ball

  • Size: Use the selected model’s height chart, then confirm that the ball’s inflation and seated fit suit you.
  • Intended use: Check whether the manufacturer describes it for exercise, stretching, balance work, or another use; do not assume that an exercise product is designed for all-day office seating.
  • Material and load rating: Treat claims such as anti-burst construction and stated weight capacity as manufacturer specifications. They do not remove the risks associated with instability, reaching, or misuse.
  • Included accessories: Verify whether a pump, plugs, plug remover, or exercise guide is included; packages vary by size and brand.

How should you use a ball if you want one at work?

Use it as exercise equipment or, if you choose, for a brief, occasional change of position—not as your default chair for a full workday. Keep a stable chair available and avoid tasks that require reaching while seated on the ball. The evidence does not support buying one on the promise that it will fix posture, relieve back pain, or build core strength through ordinary desk work.
