Bell Tent UK lists a 1.5-litre cast-iron tea kettle specifically for wood-burning stoves and open fires. For larger outdoor cooking over a live fire, a hanging cast-iron kettle is a different option; a Kelly Kettle is different again, using its own twig-fuelled fire base to heat water. The available product specifications do not establish a single best-performing kettle.
Which kind of kettle suits your wood burner?
“Kettle for a wood burner” can mean a conventional kettle placed on a stove, a larger kettle suspended over an outdoor fire, or a self-contained storm kettle. They are not interchangeable: the right choice depends on the heat source, the job you want it to do, and whether it can sit or hang securely.
| Type | How it is used | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Flat-bottom cast-iron kettle | Sits on a hob, open fire, or wood-burning stove, where the surface and kettle dimensions allow. | Heating water for tea or other hot drinks. |
| Hanging cast-iron fire kettle | Suspended over an outdoor live fire using a suitable hook. | Hot drinks, soups, or stews over a fire. |
| Storm kettle | Uses a fire in its own base and chimney draft to heat water in a surrounding chamber. | Outdoor water boiling with a dedicated twig-fuelled system. |
Flat-bottom cast iron: a direct option for a wood-burning stove
Bell Tent UK lists a cast-iron tea kettle for use on hobs, fires, and wood-burning stoves. Its product page describes a flat bottom and removable stainless-steel infuser. Listed capacity is 1.5 litres; the listed weight is 2.6 kg. The retailer gives its width as 18 cm (21 cm including the spout) and height as 12 cm. See the Bell Tent UK product listing for its specifications and current availability; at the time it was accessed in 2026, the page said it was coming back into stock.
Check fit before buying
A flat bottom does not guarantee that a kettle will sit securely on every stove. Measure the usable top surface and compare it with the kettle’s footprint, including any protruding spout or handle. The cited listing does not give a wood burner’s surface dimensions or establish compatibility with a particular stove. Consider how much room remains for safe handling, and follow the stove and kettle manufacturers’ instructions.

- EASY POUR SPOUT: Flip-up whistling spout allows smooth, controlled pouring and effortless one-hand operation. Perfect for everyday tea rituals, hot water kettle use, or entertaining guests.
- COOL TOUCH FOLDING HANDLE: Ergonomic handle stays cool for safe serving and folds down for simple storage in cabinets, drawers, or pantries between uses. Ideal for compact kitchens.
- EASY TO CLEAN & GENEROUS CAPACITY: Wide-mouth opening allows quick cleaning and refilling, while the 1.5-Quart capacity boils enough water for multiple cups.
Consider the load as well as capacity
A 1.5-litre capacity may suit making several hot drinks, but the listed 2.6 kg is the kettle’s weight before adding water. Factor that load into carrying and handling, especially when the kettle is hot. The available sources do not provide comparative boil-time, heat-distribution, fuel-efficiency, lifespan, or corrosion tests, so those performance qualities cannot be ranked from the listed specifications.
Cast-iron kettle for cooking over an outdoor fire
Breeo describes its cast-iron kettle for preparing soups, stews, and hot drinks over an open fire. Its product page lists 1.5-gallon and 2-gallon size options and specifies pairing the kettle with the Breeo Kettle Hook. That hook pairing is for the stated Breeo setup; do not assume it fits another fire rig or a wood-burning stove. View Breeo’s kettle details.

- Solid stainless steel constructed teakettle
- Whistling teakettle alerts when water is boiling. Cooktop Compatibility: Electric Coil, Electric Smooth Top, Gas
- Flip-up spout cover for safe and easy pouring and a stay cool trigger for safety
- Hand wash recommended
- Bakelite handles and stoppers
Choose this format when you want to cook over a suspended kettle rather than simply heat water in a vessel sitting on a stove. Check the fire setup and hook instructions before use; the listed gallon capacities are substantially larger than the 1.5-litre Bell Tent UK example.
Kelly Kettle: a separate, twig-fuelled outdoor system
A Kelly Kettle is not a conventional flat-bottom kettle to place on a wood burner. Its fire base burns small pieces of fuel, and the chimney draft heats water in a chamber around the chimney. Kelly Kettle lists three storm-kettle capacities: Trekker at 0.6 litre, Scout at 1.2 litres, and Base Camp at 1.6 litres. The manufacturer lists options in food-grade 304 stainless steel and 1020 anodised aluminium, and says the kettles include a stainless-steel fire base. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results. See Kelly Kettle’s product range.

Kelly Kettle also says its pot/base supports are now stainless steel and describes a Hobo Stove accessory that converts the steel fire base into a wood-fuelled cooking stove. These details concern that system and its accessories, not a kettle placed on another stove. Read Kelly Kettle’s model comparison.
How to choose for your setup
- Identify the heat source. For a wood-burning stove, start with a conventional flat-bottom kettle whose maker states it is suitable for that use. For cooking over a live outdoor fire, consider a purpose-designed hanging kettle. Choose a storm kettle only if you want its self-contained fire-base system.
- Measure the support. Compare the kettle’s dimensions with the stove top or fire hook arrangement. Confirm that it can be placed or suspended stably and handled without crowding other equipment.
- Match capacity to the task. A kettle for a few drinks does not need the same capacity as one intended for shared outdoor cooking. Remember that water adds weight and a larger vessel can be harder to handle when hot.
- Check material and care instructions. Follow the specific maker’s instructions for the kettle’s material, cleaning, heating, and storage. The cited product pages do not establish comparative durability or corrosion resistance.
- Check current product details. Stock and product specifications can change. Confirm dimensions, included components, and any required hook or accessory on the maker’s or retailer’s page before purchase.
Storm-kettle safety outdoors
The Scouts’ safety guidance applies to storm kettles and similar stove use. It warns: “Don’t use any type of stove or kettle in a confined area where burned off gases cannot escape freely.” It also says, “Never block the chimney or boil with the bung in”. Follow the instructions for the particular kettle; do not treat storm-kettle guidance as a substitute for the directions for a conventional cast-iron kettle or wood burner. Read The Scouts’ storm-kettle guidance.

When using a gas stove, please use a low or medium fire to heat the kettle to prevent the flame from burning out the spout or discoloring the kettle body
- Use the kettle outdoors in a clear, flat area, away from overhanging branches and in a designated fire area.
- Fill it before lighting, use small kindling, and add fuel carefully.
- Keep the fire under continuous supervision. Keep hands and face away from the chimney, and use gloves to remove the hot kettle.
- Pour slowly and let the kettle cool fully before refilling.
- For an older storm kettle with a cork bung, remove the cork before use. The Scouts warn that pressure buildup can spray boiling water and recommend replacing cork bungs with a pressure-relief or whistle bung.
These precautions are specifically presented in The Scouts’ storm-kettle guidance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for other kettle designs and for the appliance being used.
