The best folding hamper depends on where you need to save space and how you move laundry. For a portable basket that stores nearly flat, the US-listed Joseph Joseph Hold-All Indoor is 2 cm thick when folded; Brabantia’s 40 L model offers more stated capacity and a structured bamboo rim. If floor space is the constraint, a wall-mounted basket is a different solution: it folds against the wall rather than being carried away.
How to choose a folding hamper
“Folding hamper” can describe two different products: a portable basket that collapses for storage, or an upright basket that stays in one place and folds against a wall. Decide which job matters most before comparing capacity.
- Check folded dimensions against your storage spot. “Folds flat” does not tell you how much room it takes. Compare the stated depth and footprint with the cupboard, shelf, or gap where you plan to put it.
- Match capacity and load limit to your laundry. Litres describe volume; a maximum load, when provided, is a separate weight limit. A larger stated volume does not automatically make a basket easier to carry.
- Choose the carrying method for the route. Handles suit ordinary indoor carrying; a shoulder strap can help when transporting a full basket farther.
- Check moisture and cleaning details. A water-resistant coating, moisture-resistant lining, and waterproof base are distinct claims. Follow the maker’s cleaning instructions rather than assuming the whole basket can be washed.
Portable folding baskets compared
The following specifications come from US manufacturer product listings. They are not results of independent comparative testing.
| Model | Capacity and load | Open dimensions | Folded dimensions | Materials and moisture details | Carrying and care |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Joseph Joseph Hold-All Indoor | 35 L; maximum load 9 kg (19.8 lb) | 25 × 53 × 36 cm | 2 × 53 × 36 cm | Polyester; moisture-resistant interior | One-hand carrying handles; wipe-clean |
| Brabantia Foldable Laundry Basket | 40 L; maximum load not stated on the product page | 26.5 × 36 × 54 cm | Product page says it folds flat; folded dimensions not stated | Fabric with water-resistant coating; bamboo rim | Carrying method and cleaning instructions not stated on the product page; listed two-year guarantee |
| Joseph Joseph Hold-All Outdoor | Up to 45 L; maximum load 11 kg (24.3 lb) | Not stated on the product page | 5 × 53 × 35.5 cm | Moisture-resistant interior; waterproof molded EVA base | Adjustable shoulder strap; cleaning instructions not stated on the product page |
Joseph Joseph Hold-All Indoor: thinnest stated folded profile
The indoor Hold-All is the clearest choice in this comparison when a shallow storage gap is the priority: its US listing gives folded dimensions of 2 × 53 × 36 cm, compared with an open size of 25 × 53 × 36 cm. It holds 35 L and has a stated maximum load of 9 kg. The maker describes the interior as moisture-resistant and says the basket is wipe-clean. Its product copy says, “Folds flat for easy storage in a cupboard or above your washing machine.” That is a manufacturer description, not an independent assessment.

Brabantia Foldable Laundry Basket: more stated volume
Brabantia lists this fabric basket at 40 L, with open dimensions of 26.5 × 36 × 54 cm, a bamboo rim, and a water-resistant coating. Its product page says it folds flat and lists a two-year guarantee, but does not give folded dimensions or a maximum load. Check whether the open footprint and rim suit your space, and do not assume the stated coating makes the basket waterproof.
Joseph Joseph Hold-All Outdoor: shoulder carrying and a waterproof base
The Outdoor model is listed at up to 45 L and a maximum load of 11 kg. Its adjustable shoulder strap is useful when carrying laundry outside, while the waterproof molded EVA base addresses contact with damp ground. The folded size is 5 × 53 × 35.5 cm, so it is thicker when folded than the indoor Hold-All. The listing describes a moisture-resistant interior, which is not the same claim as a waterproof basket.

When a wall-mounted basket makes more sense
If the main goal is to keep a basket off the floor, a wall-mounted design solves a different problem from a portable folding basket. Ideal Home reported that Dunelm’s wall-mounted collapsible basket folds flat against the wall and gave dimensions of 34 × 25 × 48 cm and a price of £8. Those are figures reported in that UK article, not a current retailer confirmation; check Dunelm’s listing for present dimensions, price, stock, and installation requirements before choosing it.
This option may suit a laundry area where a basket can stay in one place and wall mounting is practical. Unlike the portable models above, the reported product’s defining space-saving feature is folding back against its mounting point, not collapsing into a compact object to carry elsewhere.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Product dimensions and capacity help determine fit, but they do not establish how long a folding mechanism, seams, handles, or coating will last. No independent durability evidence is available for these models here, so do not treat foldability or a product-page guarantee as proof of a particular lifespan. The Brabantia listing’s two-year guarantee is a stated warranty term, not a durability test.
Before buying, verify the current manufacturer or retailer listing for availability, shipping, dimensions, care instructions, and guarantee terms. Joseph Joseph’s US indoor product page says shipments are unavailable to Alaska, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the Northern Mariana Islands; shipping details can change, so confirm them on the live listing.

- Consider the Joseph Joseph Outdoor if shoulder carrying and a waterproof base are useful for moving laundry outside.
- Look at a wall-mounted option if keeping the floor clear matters more than carrying the basket between rooms.
