For a fabric-wrapped acoustic panel, Guilford of Maine FR701 2100 is a strong starting option: its manufacturer lists 95% acoustic transparency and ASTM E84 Class I or A fire performance. Those are product specifications, not proof that every panel assembly satisfies a project’s code requirements. Choose fabric by checking acoustic transparency, the required fire specification, panel compatibility, maintenance, and color—not by treating one product as universally best.
What makes a fabric suitable for acoustic panels?
The fabric covering should let sound reach the absorptive material behind it. Duvaltex describes acoustic transparency as the amount of sound that passes through a fabric and says its acoustic fabrics are acoustically transparent. The specific figure is product-dependent: FR701’s listing reports 95% acoustic transparency. Duvaltex FR701 2100 specifications
That figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independent comparison of fabrics or a guarantee of a panel’s finished acoustic performance. The panel core, construction, mounting, and room also matter.
FR701 2100: a well-documented option
Guilford of Maine FR701 2100 is specifically marketed as acoustic and panel fabric. Published specifications describe it as 100% post-consumer recycled polyester, with a weight of 16.0 ± 0.5 ounces per linear yard and at least 66 inches of usable width. Guilford of Maine FR701 2100 product page

#1 Best Overall
- Acoustically Transparent Fabric for Enhanced Sound Absorption AcouZen’s Acoustic Fabric is designed with superior sound transparency, allowing it to efficiently absorb a wide range of frequencies, including room resonance and standing waves. Thanks to its acoustically transparent properties, this fabric allows sound waves to pass through and be absorbed by the acoustic panels, effectively reducing unwanted reverberation and improving overall sound clarity. Whether in a music studio, recording room, or home studio, this fabric helps create a more balanced and accurate acoustic environment by enhancing the absorption of all sound frequencies, ensuring superior acoustic performance.
- Size Guide and Panel Creation Tips AcouZen’s Acoustic Fabric is perfect for creating DIY acoustic panels in various sizes. One piece of fabric (58.3" x 78.7") can make two 4' x 2' panels or up to four 2' x 2' panels. When cutting the fabric, be sure to account for the thickness of the panels, including the additional fabric required to cover the sides for full coverage and optimal acoustic performance.
- Packaging and Preparation for Use Due to shipping and moisture protection needs, AcouZen’s Acoustic Fabric is packaged in a fully sealed (compressed) manner, which may result in some wrinkles upon unpacking. Before use, please iron the fabric to remove wrinkles. With ironing and the tensioning of the fabric during the acoustic panel creation process, the fabric will return to a smooth and flat condition, ensuring optimal appearance and performance.
- Fabric Specifications: Material: 100% Polyester Fiber Weight: 240 GSM Dimensions: 58.3" x 78.7" (148cm x 200cm)

Its versatility extends beyond just acoustic treatment, as the premium quality fabric and fine craftsmanship also make it an ideal choice for various high-end design projects. Whether optimizing acoustics or used for innovative DIY endeavors, this fabric delivers outstanding performance, meeting the needs of those seeking superior sound quality and creative design.
These details help with material selection and estimating, but do not establish that FR701 is the least expensive choice or outperforms every alternative. The available product information does not provide a complete price comparison or independent head-to-head testing.
Check fire requirements for the whole installation
Duvaltex lists ASTM E84 Class I or A and CAN/ULC-S102.2 for FR701. Confirm which fire-performance requirements apply to the intended building, jurisdiction, and project before specifying fabric. A fabric’s rating alone does not establish that a complete acoustic panel assembly—including its core, backing, and installation—complies with a particular requirement. Ask the panel manufacturer and the project’s design or code professional to confirm suitability.

Match the fabric to panel construction and use
Plan for width and yardage
FR701 has at least 66 inches of usable width, according to Guilford of Maine. Check the actual panel dimensions, wrapping method, seams, pattern direction, and any required returns before calculating yardage. Confirm that the selected construction can be wrapped with the chosen fabric.
Consider cleaning needs
The manufacturer’s FR701 page gives water-based cleaning guidance and says the fabric may be cleaned with a 10% bleach-to-water solution followed by rinsing. Follow the current product instructions and confirm that the cleaning method is compatible with the panel assembly; a fabric-cleaning method may not be suitable for every core or backing material.

Verify color and application
Guilford of Maine recommends application testing and notes that colors can vary between dye lots. Check the current color and obtain a sample when appearance matters, then test it on the intended panel construction before ordering the full quantity.

- Confirm the acoustic role. Select a fabric described as acoustically transparent, and look for product-specific performance information where available.
- Confirm fire criteria. Identify the project’s required standard and verify the complete panel assembly—not just its facing—against that requirement.
- Check physical fit. Compare usable width, panel dimensions, wrapping details, and required yardage.
- Review upkeep and appearance. Check cleaning instructions, test the fabric in the intended application, and verify current color availability.
- Compare project cost and supply. Check current pricing, lead time, and availability directly with the manufacturer or a specialist supplier; these can change.
Is FR701 the best fabric for every acoustic panel?
No single fabric is established as best for every project. FR701 is a defensible option when its published acoustic, fire, width, appearance, and maintenance specifications fit the application. For other fabrics, compare equivalent product-level information and confirm project-specific fire compliance; the available specifications do not establish a universal winner.
