Choosing a Dehumidifier for a Damp Home Kitchen

A kitchen dehumidifier can manage lingering room moisture, but ventilation and leak repairs come first. Choose by treated area, dampness, efficiency, drainage and safe placement.

A dehumidifier can help when a kitchen or adjoining area stays damp after cooking, but it is not a substitute for a working range hood or fixing a leak. Start by controlling moisture at its source, then choose a unit for the space’s area and dampness—not simply the largest pint rating. The examples below come from a general-room review, not kitchen-specific testing.

Do you need a dehumidifier in your kitchen?

Consider one if humidity remains high after ordinary cooking and ventilation, or if a connected pantry or room stays damp. First check for plumbing or building leaks and make sure cooking moisture can escape outdoors. A dehumidifier removes moisture from room air; it does not repair water intrusion or exhaust cooking emissions.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency puts the source-control point plainly: “Cooking in the kitchen generates a lot of moisture and odors, and requires ventilation.” Its kitchen ventilation guidance says a range hood is the most common strategy and should capture and exhaust combustion products outdoors. EPA reports that ASHRAE and HVI recommend 100 cubic feet per minute (cfm) for a typical range. Larger fans may require make-up air to limit depressurization and the risk of backdrafting combustion appliances.

How to choose a dehumidifier for a kitchen

1. Size it for the area and how damp it is

Portable dehumidifier capacity is usually stated in pints of water removed per 24 hours. The required capacity depends on both the treated area and its conditions before dehumidification. ENERGY STAR’s guidance for small-to-medium spaces under 2,000 square feet gives these ranges:

Conditions Suggested capacity
Slightly to moderately damp 20–30 pints per day
Very damp 25–40 pints per day
Wet 30–50 pints per day

These are selection ranges, not a kitchen-specific guarantee. ENERGY STAR advises that it is better to oversize than undersize. If the kitchen opens into other rooms, account for the area the appliance is expected to treat, rather than assuming it will control humidity throughout the home.

2. Compare efficiency using IEF

Integrated energy factor (IEF) measures liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour; a higher IEF indicates better efficiency. ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 criteria, effective October 1, 2025, set minimum IEF levels for portable units according to capacity:

It automatically activates auto defrost and overload protection to maintain stable performance and help prevent potential damage. With AI-assisted monitoring, it optimizes operation to reduce unnecessary energy use while ensuring reliable performance in low-temperature and extended-use environments.
Portable-unit capacity Minimum IEF
Up to 25 pints per day 1.70 L/kWh
25.01–50 pints per day 2.01 L/kWh
At least 50 pints per day 3.30 L/kWh

ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers are 20% more efficient than similarly sized conventional models. Check current certification and compare IEF as well as capacity; a high pint rating alone does not tell you how much electricity a unit uses for the water it removes.

3. Treat pint ratings as test-condition figures

Capacity ratings are not directly comparable across all testing eras. The U.S. Department of Energy’s portable-dehumidifier test method uses 65°F, compared with 80°F in the earlier procedure summarized by ENERGY STAR. The cooler test can produce a lower reported capacity. When comparing labels or older reviews with current models, check which test conditions produced the number.

4. Choose drainage and controls for everyday use

Portable units commonly collect water in a bucket and shut off automatically when it is full. Some models also accept a hose for continuous drainage. A hose can reduce the need to empty a bucket, but only if you have a suitable drain and can route the hose without creating a leak or trip hazard.

  • Check whether the unit has a useful relative-humidity (RH) display or humidistat, which lets you monitor or set a target.
  • Consider bucket size and how often you are willing to empty it if continuous drainage is unavailable.
  • Check noise, controls, portability and the clearance required around the air intake and outlet.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s placement and electrical instructions. Keep water drainage away from electrical connections and walking paths.

ENERGY STAR describes 30%–50% relative humidity as the general optimum range for a building; higher levels may promote mold growth. That is general building guidance, not a promise that a particular kitchen will remain in range under every cooking or weather condition.

Placement and operation: avoid common problems

  • Place the unit where its airflow is not blocked, observing the manufacturer’s specified clearances.
  • Keep it away from splashes and from locations where a bucket overflow or hose leak could reach electrical connections.
  • Route a drain hose securely to an appropriate drain; do not let it cross a walking path.
  • Use the appliance to manage lingering room humidity, while the range hood handles moisture and emissions generated at the cooking source.

ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance on dehumidifiers covers capacity, humidity, drainage and placement. For current performance criteria, see its dehumidifier key product criteria. The DOE test-method change is summarized in ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier testing guidance.
