If by “filterless” you mean a vacuum that does not use disposable bags, shop for a bagless or cyclonic vacuum cleaner. Bagless does not mean filter-free: cyclones separate debris into a bin, while filters capture particles from the airflow. For construction dust or renovation cleanup, check the vacuum’s documented filtration and sealing—not just the word “HEPA.”
What “filterless” means in vacuum listings
“Filterless vacuum” is commonly used as shorthand for bagless collection, but it can give the wrong impression. A BISSELL product, for example, is described as bagless and multi-cyclonic while also listing an AireTight HEPA filter (BISSELL product details). Dyson separately describes cyclones that move dust and dirt into a bin and filtration layers that treat the air (Dyson vacuum filter care).
In short, cyclonic separation and filtration do different jobs. A cyclone helps separate debris for collection; filters remain part of the airflow path and may require cleaning or replacement. If your priority is avoiding disposable bags, search for “bagless cyclonic vacuum cleaner,” then review the exact model’s filter and care requirements.
How to compare bagless vacuums
There is not enough comparative test evidence here to name a tested winner. Compare specific models against the demands of your space and the manufacturer’s documentation.

What a HEPA claim does—and does not—tell you
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that a HEPA filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns; the year is not stated on its live page (EPA: What is a HEPA filter?). That is a filter-level definition. It does not by itself establish that a particular consumer vacuum is sealed or that the complete machine achieves that efficiency.
For lead renovation work, EPA’s guidance uses a narrower regulatory definition from 40 CFR 745.83: a HEPA vacuum has a HEPA filter as its last filtration stage, and all drawn air must pass through it without leaking past the filter. The vacuum must also be operated and maintained according to its manufacturer’s instructions. EPA warns that fitting an aftermarket HEPA filter to a shop vacuum does not necessarily make it designed or sealed to meet this definition (EPA: HEPA vacuums for renovation cleanup).

That renovation guidance should not be read as a general health guarantee for ordinary household cleaning. A HEPA label alone does not establish allergy outcomes or prove whole-machine sealing.
How to avoid a maintenance headache
Bagless machines still need upkeep, and the right procedure depends on the model. Dyson recommends washing filters on its cordless range at least once a month to help maintain suction; that is manufacturer guidance for that range, not a universal schedule (Dyson vacuum filter care). Follow your own vacuum’s instructions, including the stated drying directions for washable parts, before reinstalling them.

For its named Momentum/Powertrak cyclonic bagless vacuum, BISSELL’s no-suction troubleshooting guidance tells users to empty the dirt cup and inspect or remove the post-motor filter (BISSELL Momentum/Powertrak troubleshooting). Treat that as model-specific troubleshooting, not a procedure for every bagless vacuum. When a filter needs replacement, match it to the exact vacuum model; there is no universal replacement part.

For routine household floors, prioritize the cleaning head, format, bin handling, and maintenance burden that fit your space. For renovation work—especially lead-related cleanup—do not assume that a household bagless vacuum is suitable because it is cyclonic or advertises a HEPA filter. Check whether the complete vacuum meets the applicable requirements for the work and follow relevant safety guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions.
