The most reliable way to get rid of fruit flies is to remove what they are breeding in; an electric trap can only help catch adults. If you want an electric device for indoors, choose a glue-board model intended for small flies rather than an exposed high-voltage zapper near food preparation. The available extension guidance does not establish a best-performing household model or comparative capture rates, so a category-level choice is more defensible than a ranked product list.
Do electric fly traps work on fruit flies?
They may catch some, but a UV light trap is not a dependable fruit-fly solution on its own. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says light traps are most effective for larger flies such as house flies, though they may also catch small flies. The Pests in the Home resource says fruit flies are not attracted to fly-light traps like other fly species. Treat UV devices as a possible supplement, not a proven way to eliminate a fruit-fly infestation.
Traps capture adult flies; they do not remove eggs or larvae developing in food residue. Texas A&M notes that fruit flies are about 1/8 inch (2 to 4 mm) long, and under optimum conditions their life cycle can finish in as few as 8 days. The University of Maryland Extension gives a general life-cycle range of 8 to 10 days. Actual timing depends on conditions, but the short cycle helps explain why flies can keep appearing when a breeding source remains.

How to choose a fruit-fly trap without relying on unsupported rankings
Because independent head-to-head results for named household models are not established, compare the device’s design and upkeep instead of trusting a “best” claim based on capture performance.
- Attractant: Does the device specifically include a fruit-fly bait, or does it rely on UV light alone?
- Capture method: Does it use a glue board or an exposed electric grid? For indoor kitchen use, avoid exposed electrocution-style designs.
- Consumables: Check whether replacement boards are needed, whether they are compatible with the device, and whether bait must be purchased separately.
- Placement and upkeep: Look for clear manufacturer directions on indoor placement, cleaning and safe handling.
- Daily comfort: Consider whether light or operating noise will be disruptive where the trap is placed.
Commercial baited traps and simple traps using apple cider vinegar or another fermenting attractant can capture adults. No trap type substitutes for removing the material where flies are breeding.

How to get rid of fruit flies at the source
Start with a targeted kitchen clean-up. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says identifying and eliminating breeding sites is essential for complete indoor-fly control; the University of Maryland Extension calls sanitation the primary control for fruit flies.
- Store ripe fruit in the refrigerator and remove overripe or decaying produce.
- Rinse and drain bottles and cans waiting for recycling, especially if they held sweet drinks or alcohol.
- Empty the trash and clean spills, sticky syrup, wine or beer residue, and other food deposits.
- Dry damp mops, towels and similar materials that may retain food and moisture.
- If flies continue, inspect less obvious areas for moist organic residue and check that the insects are actually fruit flies.
Drain flies, phorid flies and fungus gnats can be similar in size but may require different source treatment. If the insects persist after obvious food sources are removed, identifying the species and its breeding site matters more than adding another trap.

When to use a trap—and when to change approach
Use a trap as a monitoring or adult-capture aid while you remove breeding material. If adults keep appearing, revisit the source search rather than assuming the device is defective: hidden food residue or another kind of fly may be involved. Texas A&M’s guidance is direct: “Fly control is most effective when breeding sites in the structure are identified and eliminated.”
