The brand matters less than the HE label, correct dispenser placement, and using the right amount for your load.
What detergent does GE recommend?
GE Appliances recommends HE detergent for all its washers, past and present, because HE formulas are designed for the lower water levels used by modern washers. GE permits liquid or powder HE detergent in its general guidance and names Tide HE as an example. That is an example, not a claim that Tide is better than other HE detergents: GE does not publish a brand comparison or identify one universal winner.

How to choose the right detergent for your GE washer
- Look for the HE label. GE recommends HE detergent even if your washer itself is not marked HE.
- Check the owner’s manual and dispenser labels. Placement rules vary by model and dispenser type, especially for pods, packs, and sheets.
- Choose a format your washer accepts. General GE guidance permits liquid or powder HE detergent, but some systems, such as UltraFast Combo SmartDispense, accept liquid only.
- Account for your laundry conditions. Follow the detergent package and washer manual; the appropriate amount can depend on load size, soil level, water hardness, and temperature.

How much detergent should you use?
Start with the amount directed on the detergent package and consult your washer’s owner’s manual. GE notes that detergent use can vary with water temperature, water hardness, load size, and soil level. More detergent does not necessarily clean better: using too much can create excess suds and leave residue on clothing. Is Tide the best detergent for a GE washing machine?
GE names Tide HE as an example, but its cited guidance does not rank brands or establish a single best detergent for every washer and household. Choose an HE-labeled product that fits your model’s dispenser instructions and your laundry needs, including any fragrance or fabric-care preferences. Check the product label for those personal-use details.
