Best Forced-Air Propane Heaters for Construction: How to Choose the Right Size

Choosing a forced-air propane heater starts with the work area and safe operating conditions—not the highest BTU rating. Compare documented models, fuel needs, power, ventilation and exact-manual requirements.

The right forced-air propane heater depends on the work area, required heat output, fuel supply, electrical or battery power, and—above all—whether the space can be ventilated safely. These are direct-fired construction heaters: combustion products, including carbon monoxide, enter the heated space. They are not automatically safe for occupied indoor or residential use. Compare the exact model’s specifications and manual before choosing or operating one.

What to compare before choosing a heater

A high BTU rating is not automatically a better fit. Match output to the work area, then confirm that the heater can be operated there with the required ventilation and clearances. Manufacturer listings describe products; they do not establish comparative performance in head-to-head tests.

  • Rated heat output: Compare the model’s BTU-per-hour range and whether its output is adjustable.
  • Operating environment: Check the manufacturer’s stated restrictions and the individual manual’s ventilation and placement requirements.
  • Fuel use and supply: Compare propane consumption and cylinder requirements at the lowest expected temperature. Tank sizing is model- and condition-specific.
  • Power: Determine whether the heater needs an electrical outlet or uses a cordless battery, and account for runtime and charging needs.
  • Included equipment: Verify whether the hose and regulator are included and compatible with the intended setup.
  • Portability and support: Consider how the unit will be moved around the site and whether approved replacement parts are available.

Documented forced-air propane models

The figures below come from the cited manufacturer materials. They are specifications, not independent performance results; listings and configurations can change. Confirm the current manual and product details for the precise model you are considering.

Manufacturer and model Rated output Fuel use or runtime Power and included equipment
Mr. Heater MH60QFAV 30,000–60,000 BTU/hr 1.4–2.8 lb/hr 115 V, 60 Hz; 10-foot hose with regulator packaged with heater
Mr. Heater MH85QFAV 50,000–85,000 BTU/hr 2.3–3.9 lb/hr 115 V, 60 Hz; 10-foot hose with regulator packaged with heater
Mr. Heater MH125QFAV 75,000–125,000 BTU/hr 3.5–5.8 lb/hr 115 V, 60 Hz; 10-foot hose with regulator packaged with heater

DEWALT DXH70CFAV 70,000 BTU/hr Not stated on the cited category page Cordless; further details not stated on the cited category page

Mr. Heater’s HERO product page lists battery runtimes for its cordless models: MH35CLP, eight hours; MH60CLP, four hours on one battery or eight hours on two. It also gives charge times and identifies replacement battery part F227964. These are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. The cited DEWALT product-category page lists the output ratings above, but does not provide a comparative performance test.

Can you use a forced-air propane heater in a garage?

Do not assume that a garage or other enclosed space is safe simply because a heater is marketed for construction use. Mr. Heater describes its forced-air propane heaters as “outdoor only,” while saying they may be used in garage or construction settings with proper ventilation. The manufacturer also says these heaters lack an oxygen depletion sensor. Follow the exact model manual and applicable local requirements; do not treat a general category statement as approval for every garage or jobsite.

The cited Mr. Heater manual defines direct-fired operation as combustion products entering the heated space. It warns that inadequate ventilation can expose people to carbon monoxide and lists headache, dizziness, burning eyes or nose, nausea, dry mouth, and sore throat among possible symptoms. Leave the area and seek appropriate help if symptoms occur; do not continue operating the heater in a space where ventilation is inadequate.

Ventilation and clearances are model-specific

For the MH60QFAV, MH85QFAV, and MH125QFAV models covered by the cited manual, minimum clearances are six feet from the outlet, six feet from the top, and two feet from the sides. The manual also says to keep the heater ten feet from canvas or plastic tarpaulins.

That manual’s ventilation table calls for openings near both the floor and ceiling: one square foot for the 55/60 class and two square feet for the 85/125 class. Separately, Mr. Heater’s category FAQ gives a general figure of one square inch of ventilation opening per 1,000 BTUs. These figures apply in different manufacturer guidance contexts; do not substitute the FAQ’s general figure for the requirements in the exact model manual. Follow local authority requirements as well.

Choose the propane cylinder for the model and temperature

Propane supply needs depend on heater size and the lowest expected air temperature, not just a generic tank-size rule. The cited Mr. Heater manual includes a cylinder-selection chart based on those factors, and the manufacturer cautions that cold weather can require a larger propane source. Use the current manual’s chart and consult a propane supplier if the installation or supply is uncertain.

For the listed Mr. Heater models, the manual calls for propane and vapor-withdrawal supply, cylinders kept upright and secured, and containers placed at least seven feet away in the United States or ten feet away in Canada. It also instructs users to leak-check new or reconnected fittings with soap and water. Verify these instructions against the exact model manual and local rules; do not assume they apply to other heaters.

Check recalls by exact model number

Before use, check the exact model number against current recall notices. On April 3, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall covering DEWALT DXH70CFAVX cordless heaters. The supplied instructions could result in the fan not starting and the heater overheating; the listed remedy is repair through the recall process, including updated instructions and a warning sticker. The notice reports about 21,250 units in the United States and about 500 sold in Canada. It directs consumers to stop using affected heaters and follow the recall instructions. This notice concerns the DXH70CFAVX specifically; it should not be generalized to other DEWALT models.
