1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a routine deck refresh, a corded electric pressure washer is generally enough; choosing a safe nozzle and technique matters more than buying the machine with the highest advertised PSI. Consumer Reports gives 800 to 1,000 PSI as general guidance for deck cleaning, but that is not a universal setting: wood type, surface condition, nozzle, distance, and the washer all affect the force reaching the boards.
How to choose an electric pressure washer for a deck
Compare practical control and reach before maximum pressure. Consumer Reports’ buying guide highlights nozzles, hose length, and—on electric models—power-cord length. Those factors affect whether you can clean steadily without using an overly aggressive spray or repeatedly moving the machine. Consumer Reports’ pressure washer buying guide also provides a useful basis for comparing models.
- Nozzle control: Look for a suitable range of spray patterns and check the manual for which tips and settings are appropriate for wood. A wide spray is a safer starting point than a concentrated stream.
- Hose and cord reach: Check the listed lengths against the deck layout and the location of a suitable outlet. Longer reach can reduce repositioning, but follow the manual’s electrical and operating instructions.
- Detergent handling: If you plan to use a deck cleaner, check how the washer applies detergent and whether the cleaner is compatible with both the deck material and the equipment.
- Output and time: Electric models can handle many lighter jobs, though some may take longer than gas models. Match the washer to the size and condition of the deck rather than assuming higher maximum PSI means better cleaning.
Consumer Reports’ June 9, 2026 electric and battery washer roundup says some electric models can clean as well as gas models, while noting they may take longer. Its accessible roundup information does not establish deck-specific model rankings or measurements, so it cannot support a definitive winner list. A documented electric model to investigate
SIMPSON Clean Machine CM61484
SIMPSON lists the CM61484 as a residential cold-water electric pressure washer rated at 2,600 PSI and 1.1 GPM. The manufacturer specifies a 25-foot high-pressure hose, a 35-foot GFCI power cord, an onboard detergent tank, and five quick-connect nozzle patterns: 15°, 25°, 40°, turbo, and soap. SIMPSON lists tasks such as fences, home exteriors, vehicles, patios, and pool areas. SIMPSON’s CM61484 specifications make it a concrete model to compare, not a proven top-performing deck washer: the manufacturer specifications and listed tasks are not an independent deck-cleaning test.

Match the cleaning approach to the decking
Identify the deck material and its condition before setting up the washer. Consumer Reports says many wood decks can be pressure-washed, but soft woods such as Southern yellow pine need a low-pressure nozzle or setting, and the nozzle should not be held too close. It identifies ipe, cumaru, and tigerwood as hardwood examples that can withstand power washing. These general observations do not supersede the deck maker’s warranty or instructions, or the pressure washer manual. Consumer Reports’ deck-cleaning guidance gives 800 to 1,000 PSI as a general recommended pressure for decks; do not treat a washer’s advertised maximum as the pressure to apply to every surface.
How to clean a deck with a pressure washer
- Read the instructions first. Check the washer manual and deck-care guidance for compatible nozzles, settings, and cleaning products. Begin at low pressure with a wide spray, and test an inconspicuous area before proceeding.
- Prepare the area. Clear furniture and other obstacles, then sweep away loose dirt and debris. Wear protective eyewear, long pants, and sturdy footwear. Consumer Reports’ deck-cleaning instructions say: “Long pants, sturdy footwear, and goggles are a must.”
- Use cleaner only as directed. If embedded dirt calls for a deck cleaner, follow its label and the washer manual. Scrub corners and spaces between railings with a stiff brush, and do not let the cleaner dry on the boards.
- Set a cautious starting distance. Consumer Reports’ how-to says to begin about two feet from the surface and move closer only if needed, never closer than six inches from the wood. Continue to follow the washer manual and stop if the wood’s surface changes or fibers begin to lift.
- Wash with controlled passes. Use the widest suitable spray, move along the board grain, and work in broad, overlapping strokes. Keep the nozzle moving instead of lingering over one spot.
Do not use a zero-degree nozzle on wood. Consumer Reports says it does not recommend pressure-washer models supplied with a zero-degree nozzle because the concentrated stream can pierce skin and cut protective gear. Consumer Reports’ pressure washer safety guidance explains the hazard.

What to buy alongside the washer
For the cleaning method above, the useful supporting items are a compatible deck cleaner when needed, a stiff scrub brush for corners and gaps, protective eyewear, and sturdy footwear. Choose cleaner by deck material and follow its label. If the deck needs protection after cleaning, select a wood stain or finish compatible with the decking and follow its application instructions; cleaning alone does not determine which finish is appropriate.
