There is no single best industrial hand dryer for every facility. The right choice depends on restroom traffic, available wall space and electrical service, noise tolerance, cleaning capacity, accessibility needs, and the total cost of operation. Compare manufacturer specifications as claims—not as independent head-to-head results—and verify the installation requirements for your project.
What to compare before choosing a commercial hand dryer
Start with the building and its users, then compare performance and operating costs. A fast-drying model may not suit a quiet office, and a low rated power does not by itself establish the lowest lifecycle cost.
- Site fit: Check wall area, mounting type, wall construction, depth, clearance, voltage, circuit requirements, and user reach.
- Performance: Compare stated dry time, energy per dry, and the test endpoint. Different manufacturers may use different methods, so a quoted time is not automatically comparable.
- Noise: Check whether a sound rating is sound power or sound pressure, and assess it in the room where the dryer will be installed.
- Maintenance: Review cleaning frequency, filter replacement, service indicators, parts support, and warranty conditions.
- Hygiene claims: Identify the filter, stated capture conditions, and any relevant certification. These product claims do not establish that one hand-drying method is universally more hygienic.
For codes and accessibility, use manufacturer installation documents as a starting point, then confirm requirements with the authority having jurisdiction and the project team. Product documentation alone does not establish compliance for a particular site.
Two commercial models: specifications and claims
The following examples illustrate why specifications need context. Figures are published by the manufacturers; they are not results from an independent, common-condition comparison.

|---|---|---|
| Dry-time claim | Dyson lists 10 seconds in Max mode and 12 seconds in Eco mode, using its stated test method based on NSF P335 and a residual-moisture endpoint. Dyson specifications | Excel advertises an 8-second dry time; the product page does not establish a common independent comparison method. Excel specifications |
| Power or energy | Dyson lists 900 W in Max mode, 650 W in Eco mode, and 9.1 kJ per dry in Eco mode. These are manufacturer specifications. | Excel advertises 80% less energy than conventional hand dryers; the page does not establish an independently comparable baseline. |
| Sound | Dyson lists sound power of 79 dB(A) in Max mode and 76 dB(A) in Eco mode. Compare only with ratings measured on a compatible basis. | Not stated on the cited Excel product page. |
| Size and mounting | Dyson lists dimensions of 19.69 × 17.72 × 4 inches. Its technical page recommends a backplate for plasterboard and cavity walls. | Excel lists dimensions of 11 3/4 × 12 11/16 × 6 11/16 inches for the surface-mounted, sensor-operated dryer. An ADA-compliant recess kit is available; verify the configuration and site requirements. |
| Filtration and credentials | Dyson says the HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles under prescribed test conditions. Dyson also identifies HACCP International certification for food-preparation environments and certification to NSF International Protocol P335; confirm current scope and requirements before relying on either for compliance. | Excel lists an optional electrostatic HEPA filtration system. The cited product page does not establish a directly comparable capture figure. |
| Cleaning and warranty | Dyson recommends daily cleaning. Its technical page provides installation and maintenance manuals, drawings, cleaning guidance, and ADA-related documents. | Excel lists a seven-year limited warranty. Review its conditions and confirm parts availability for the selected configuration. |
Dyson’s technical and product information is available at its Airblade 9kJ page. Excel’s configuration, finish, accessory, and support information is on the XLERATOR product page. Verify the exact model, voltage, accessories, and current documentation before specification.
How to estimate total operating cost
Build the calculation around the facility’s actual usage and local prices rather than adopting a headline savings percentage. Include acquisition and installation as well as ongoing expenses.

- High-speed, ENERGY EFFICIENT Hand Dryer. 8-10 Second Dry Time!
- Special Sleek Gray Cover. 95% Cost Savings Vs. Paper Towels
- Made in USA Certified
- Adjustable Speed and Sound Control
- 7 Year Leading Warranty and Helps Qualify for LEED Credits
- Estimate annual uses. Use observed or projected daily restroom traffic and operating days. State the assumptions so the estimate can be updated.
- Calculate dryer electricity. If energy per dry is published, multiply it by annual uses and the local electricity rate. If only rated power is available, estimate energy from power and operating time, while noting that rated power and actual usage may not capture every operating condition.
- Estimate the paper-towel alternative. Include towel purchases, dispensers, waste handling, and any relevant labor or servicing costs.
- Add ownership costs. Include installed cost, cleaning, filter and replacement parts, and expected maintenance. Compare the same time period for each option.
- Test different traffic scenarios. A high-traffic transit facility and a low-use office can reach different cost outcomes, even with the same equipment.
Dyson’s comparison page lists an annual running cost of $24 for the Airblade 9kJ in Eco mode, based on an assumed average electricity price of $0.13/kWh as of October 2023. This is a dated, manufacturer-calculated comparison, not a universal current cost; recalculate it with local rates and site usage. See Dyson’s commercial hand dryer comparison. Excel advertises 95% cost savings versus paper towels, but its cited page does not establish a common independent comparison basis. Do not compare that percentage directly with Dyson’s estimate without reconciling usage, energy prices, and cost assumptions.

Keep three questions separate: what the product’s filter is claimed to capture, what certifications apply to the specific model and use, and what independent evidence says about hygiene outcomes in a restroom. The cited manufacturer pages provide product claims and credentials; they do not settle broader comparisons between hand dryers and other drying methods.
