For routine soil, hot water and dish soap may be enough; for stubborn buildup, choose a degreaser whose directions explicitly support your surface. Clean gently, follow product-specific dwell and rinse instructions, and never assume a cleaner suitable for the exterior is also suitable for the filters.
How to choose a grease cleaner for your range hood
Start with the hood, not the strongest-sounding product. Maytag says cleaner choice depends on the appliance’s make and model; it recommends hot water and dish soap for most hoods, with a degreasing agent when grease buildup calls for one. Check the owner’s manual and the cleaner’s label before applying anything, especially to black stainless steel, aluminum, painted or coated finishes, and control areas.
- Match cleaner to material and finish. A product listing that mentions stainless steel does not establish compatibility with every coating or hood finish. Bosch advises avoiding chlorine-based and abrasive cleaners on stainless steel.
- Match the product to the job. Mild soapy water is a sensible first step for routine surface soil. For heavier grease, use a product whose manufacturer lists kitchen grease or range hoods among its intended uses.
- Separate exterior and filter cleaning. A cleaner suitable for the hood exterior is not automatically suitable for a removable grease filter. Follow the hood manual and the cleaner label for each part.
- Check application and cleanup directions. Products differ in whether they require a spot test, a cool surface, a wait, rinsing, or a particular method for removing residue from a vertical surface.
Named cleaner options and their stated uses
These are manufacturer-described options, not independently tested or ranked winners. Confirm that the current product label and your hood manual allow the intended use.

How to clean the hood exterior
- Turn the hood off and check its manual. Use the manual for model-specific cleaning restrictions and filter removal instructions. Bosch also directs owners to the manual for filter removal.
- For stainless steel, find the grain. Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soapy water in the direction of the grain, then dry. Bosch cautions: “DO NOT use chlorine-based cleaners, abrasive cloths or cleaners.” Bosch hood-care guidance
- Step up only if grease remains. Choose a degreaser whose label supports the exact surface. Where the product requires it, spot test an inconspicuous area and apply only under the stated conditions, such as to a cool surface.
- Follow that cleaner’s timing and cleanup directions. Dwell times vary by product; do not let a cleaner dry on the hood unless its label specifically directs otherwise. Wipe or rinse as instructed, then dry the surface to help prevent water marks.
- Use a non-abrasive tool. A soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge is appropriate for gentle cleaning. Maytag warns that steel wool and scouring pads can scratch the exterior.
How to clean removable grease filters
Remove filters only as the owner’s manual directs. Bosch’s general guidance is to soak grease filters in hot soapy water for 10 minutes, brush them, rinse, and let them dry fully before putting them back. Bosch hood-care guidance Filter dishwasher compatibility is model-specific, so do not assume a filter is dishwasher-safe without checking the manual.

How often to clean and replace filters
Cleaning and replacement schedules vary by brand and use. Maytag recommends cleaning a hood monthly when it is used daily, or about every three months when it is used infrequently. For charcoal filters under normal use, Maytag states a six-month replacement interval; Bosch gives three to four months for charcoal or carbon filters depending on usage. Do not respond to a suspected chemical stain by scrubbing harder or applying another strong cleaner. Bosch’s care guidance calls for mild soapy water, a soft cloth, and wiping with the grain; it also warns against chlorine-based and abrasive cleaners. Check the hood manual and the label of anything already applied before trying a different treatment. The product information cited here does not establish one universal method for removing chemical damage across stainless-steel finishes.

A stainless-steel brightener or conditioner is a separate finishing step, not a grease-removal substitute. Bosch excludes its conditioner from logos, control labels, and black stainless steel; check the product instructions and hood manual before using any conditioner.
