The best filler plants are those that suit the light, moisture, climate and space available—not one particular botanical group. In containers, they add bushy or massed growth between a taller focal plant and trailing plants; in borders, they knit neighboring plants together and cover open ground. Annuals such as cosmos and zinnias offer seasonal color, while suitable perennials can provide longer-lived foliage and flowers.
What makes a plant a filler?
“Filler” describes a design role, not a plant type. A good container filler supplies the middle layer: enough foliage or flowers to make the arrangement feel connected without overwhelming its focal plant or trailing edge. For borders, the equivalent is a plant that fills gaps and softens transitions between neighboring plants. The Royal Horticultural Society describes the container approach as a mix of showy plants, bushier plants and trailing plants in its hanging-basket guide.
Use the familiar thriller-filler-spiller idea as a layout aid rather than a fixed recipe. A filler can be chosen for flowers, foliage or a spreading, bushy habit; its suitability depends on the site and the scale of the other plants.
Choose fillers by growing conditions and lifespan
Light
Check the plant’s stated light needs against the actual site. Many summer bedding plants prefer full sun, while some tolerate light shade, so two plants that look compatible may not thrive together in the same container. The RHS offers summer container guidance on combining plants with similar requirements.

Moisture and soil
Group plants with similar water needs. A dry, sunny position calls for different choices from a moist or damp spot; a mixed container makes watering especially important because its plants share the same growing space. If frequent watering is difficult, the RHS suggests considering drought-resistant choices, but that does not make every combination low-maintenance.
Seasonal display or repeat-year interest
Annuals are useful when you want quick, seasonal color or need to fill a summer container or border gap. Cosmos and zinnia are RHS-listed examples, and annuals can be raised from seed or bought as young plants. Most prefer a fairly sunny position, though some tolerate shade. In frost-prone places, wait until frost risk has passed before planting tender annuals outdoors; use local guidance rather than applying UK timing elsewhere. See the RHS annuals guide.

Perennials can give containers longer-lived interest, but hardiness and winter requirements vary by plant and climate. The RHS highlights Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ for shade and Heuchera ‘Purple Petticoats’ for sun or partial shade in its container perennial selection. Confirm whether a perennial can overwinter in your location and whether a container needs winter protection.
Mature size and habit
Choose a plant whose mature habit will occupy the available middle layer without crowding its neighbors. Check the plant label for mature height and spread before planting; a filler that quickly outgrows a small pot may obscure the focal plant. For example, consult the RHS Lavatera growing guide for plant-specific growing information rather than relying on the word “filler” alone.

Filler plant ideas for containers and borders
| Choice | Where it can fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmos or zinnia | Seasonal color in a summer container or border gap | Sun and moisture needs, local frost timing, and the variety’s mature height and spread. RHS lists both as annual examples. |
| Sanguisorba ‘Tanna’ | A named filler in a sunny container combination | The RHS’s 2026 Sandringham example pairs it with white gaura (Oenothera linheimeri) and Mexican fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus). Treat this as one designed combination, not a universal recipe. |
| Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ | Foliage interest in a shady container | Confirm its growing conditions and winter suitability for your location. |
| Heuchera ‘Purple Petticoats’ | Foliage interest in sun or partial shade | Match moisture needs and container conditions to the plant. |
The combination featuring ‘Tanna’ is described in the RHS 2026 Sandringham plant combinations. Its named plants illustrate how a filler can sit among other roles; local climate and growing conditions still determine whether the mix is suitable.
Use native plants where they suit the site
Native species can also serve as thriller, filler or spiller plants. The Missouri Botanical Garden provides separate native-container recipes for sun and shade. Check proposed species against local conditions and regional native-plant advice. Obtain plants grown from seed or purchased from reputable nurseries; do not dig plants from the wild.
Quick Recap
Planting a balanced container
- Assess the site. Note how much sun it receives and whether the position is dry, moist or damp. Use the plant’s specific requirements to guide your choices.
- Pick plants that can share a container. Match light and moisture needs, then compare mature sizes so the filler does not crowd the focal or trailing plants.
- Set the roles. Arrange the taller focal plant, bushier filler and trailing plants so each has room and the filler connects the composition rather than hiding it.
- Plant at an appropriate time. For hanging baskets in the UK, the RHS advises planting summer bedding toward the end of May or early June and putting baskets outside after frost risk has passed. In other regions, follow local frost dates.
- Plan care around the combination. Repeat a plant across several pots if you want visual continuity, and account for watering needs. For baskets, the RHS lists a basket, liner, plants, hand trowel and peat-free multi-purpose compost among the supplies in its planting guide.
