There is no one-size-fits-all best automatic transfer switch for solar backup. The right equipment depends first on your battery-and-inverter system: products such as Generac’s PWRcell transfer equipment, Tesla’s Backup Gateway 2 and FranklinWH’s aGate are platform components, not interchangeable generic switches. Match the equipment to your system, then compare service rating, backup scope, generator support and load management.
What does a solar backup transfer switch do?
Transfer equipment controls the change between grid power and backup supply and isolates the backed-up installation from the grid. The equipment’s exact role depends on the system architecture: a product may be a transfer switch, a backup gateway or part of a broader home-energy-management system.
That distinction matters when choosing equipment. A device’s current rating alone does not tell you whether it works with your battery, inverter, electrical panel or intended backup configuration.
Which solar backup systems have documented transfer or management equipment?
These examples illustrate the different kinds of equipment manufacturers specify. They are not a performance ranking: the available documentation does not establish a head-to-head comparison of price, reliability or backup performance.

| System and equipment | Documented role | Published specifications or distinctions |
|---|---|---|
| Generac PWRcell ATS: CXSC100A301, CXSW100A301 and CXSW200A301 | Transfer equipment for specified PWRcell solar-plus-battery configurations, with load-management options. | The Generac spec sheet lists 100A non-service-entrance, 100A service-entrance and 200A service-entrance variants, respectively. It requires a PWRcell ESS; Generac warns that generator-only use without a PWRcell ESS can damage the switch and void its warranty. Generac PWRcell ATS spec sheet |
| Generac PWRcell 2 Smart Disconnect Switch (SDS) | Described as the hub connecting solar, battery storage, the home, the grid and a standby generator, with automatic power-flow control during outages. | Generac’s PWRcell 2 page describes the SDS as part of that system. It is a different product-generation reference from the three PWRcell ATS models above; do not assume they are interchangeable. Generac PWRcell 2 system description |
| Tesla Backup Gateway 2 | Powerwall system component that controls the grid connection and automatically disconnects from the grid for backup. | Tesla’s datasheet lists a 200A rating, split-phase feed and support for up to 10 AC-coupled Powerwalls. These are specifications for this Tesla component, not evidence of compatibility with other brands. Tesla Backup Gateway 2 datasheet |
| FranklinWH aGate | Home-energy-management center for coordinating solar, batteries, generators, EVs and home loads, including transitions between grid and backup sources. | The linked product page does not state a comparable service rating. Treat aGate as part of FranklinWH’s integrated system, not as a universally compatible standalone switch. FranklinWH aGate product page |
How should you choose equipment for your system?
- Identify the exact battery-and-inverter system and generation. Confirm the manufacturer, model and system generation before comparing hardware. In particular, distinguish the listed PWRcell ATS models from the PWRcell 2 SDS description.
- Decide what you want backed up. Whole-home backup and selected-load backup are different design goals. Ask which circuits the system will serve and how the equipment manages loads; a service rating by itself does not establish which appliances can run together.
- Match the electrical service and configuration. Compare service rating and service-entrance status, as well as phase and voltage, against the actual installation. For example, Tesla lists its Backup Gateway 2 as 200A and split phase; those details do not establish that it suits a different system or panel.
- Account for other power sources and load controls. If you plan to integrate a standby generator, EV charging or managed home loads, confirm that the specific system supports the intended arrangement. Generac says PWRmanager can shed non-essential loads to conserve battery energy; backup runtime still depends on the complete system and load plan, not the transfer-equipment rating alone.
- Have the specific installation checked. Ask a qualified installer to verify compatibility with the inverter, battery, panel, utility requirements and applicable local rules before selecting or ordering equipment. Manufacturer product descriptions do not establish suitability for every home or jurisdiction.
Why not use a generic generator transfer switch?
A standby-generator ATS switches between utility power and a compatible generator; that function does not by itself make it suitable as the interface for a solar-battery backup system. Generac describes its separate automatic transfer switches for standby-generator configurations, while its PWRcell ATS documentation specifically requires a PWRcell ESS. Do not substitute one product category for another without confirmation from the system manufacturer and installer.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- AUTO-SWITCHING: When your batteries voltage are lower than cut off point, the solar transfer switch will automatically switch to grid power, protect your battery. And it will switch back to battery power when the batteries voltage are higher than recovery point. It allows for unattended management, which is very convenient and time-saving
- PEACE OF MIND: When you are out on vacation, never worry about draining your batteries due to lack of sunlight or wind. The ATS monitors the battery voltage in real time, it will switch to the grid power in time, greatly prolonging the battery life and keeping your appliances running 24/7
- FAST TRANSFER TIME: ≤25ms, 5.5kw(110V) or 11KW(220v) big power. It can immediately switch between two power supplies with almost no downtime. So the main appliances in your home will not lose power between switches and your normal life will not be affected at all
- USER FRIENDLY: An LCD screen provides real-time updates on battery voltage and power status, ensuring clear visibility at a glance. Two USB ports facilitate convenient charging. Customize cutoff and recovery voltages effortlessly to suit your preferences, ensuring a straightforward setup
- AUTO DISTINGUISH: Automatically identifies the system voltage: DC 12/24/48V, AC 100-120V 60HZ / 220-240V 50HZ. Suitable for sealed, gel, lead-acid, lithium batteries etc. As long as the battery voltage is within the following voltage ranges: 9-17V at 12V system;18-30V at 24V system; 30-60V at 48V system

- Functions and Features: 100a 2p dual power auto transfer switch W2R is a PC-level infrequent switching switch, mainly used for automatic or manual conversion of two power supplies, and can test whether the common power supply or backup power supply is normal. When the common power supply A is abnormal, the backup power supply B is quickly switched and put into use within 0.05 seconds to ensure the continuity, reliability and safety of power supply. When the common power supply returns to normal, it automatically switches from the backup power supply to the common power supply. Both power supply A and power supply B can be connected to the mains/generator/photovoltaic, with four wiring.
- Automatic Mode: ac 110v automatic transfer switch use the automatic mode, the left switch must be in the Auto, and the red handle on the right should point to Source A. When the normal power source A is working normally, A (red light) is always on; when the normal power source A is abnormal, A (green light) goes out and switches to the automatic power source B within 0.05 seconds, and B (green light) is on. When the normal power source A returns to normal, it will automatically switch from the backup power source B to the normal power source A.
- Manual Mode: guetneu automatic transfer switch use manual mode to make sure the left switch is in Manual. If you choose power source A, operate the red switch handle on the right to point to Sonrce A, and LED indicator A (red light) will be on. If you choose power source B, manually operate the red switch handle on the right to point the switch to Source B, and LED indicator B (red light) will be on.
- 110V Over-Voltage and Under-Voltage Protection: automatic transfer switch 110v designed for home track installation, dedicated to PZ30 distribution box.
