To build a regulation-size beanbag game board, make a smooth 47.75–48-inch-long by 23.75–24-inch-wide plywood top, cut a 6-inch hole centered 9 inches from the top and 12 inches from either side, and support it on a stable frame with legs that meet your chosen ruleset’s height requirements. The two boards in a set should match. The specifications below distinguish WSOC guidance from ACA dimensions rather than treating them as one universal standard.
Choose the dimensions for your ruleset
WSOC and the American Cornhole Association (ACA) specify overlapping—but not identical—board dimensions. Pick the ruleset you plan to follow before cutting; if you intend to play under a particular competition’s rules, confirm its current specifications.
| Specification | WSOC | ACA |
|---|---|---|
| Board length | 47.75–48 inches (WSOC team rules) | 47.5–48 inches (ACA regulation board) |
| Board width | 23.75–24 inches (WSOC team rules) | 23.5–24 inches (ACA regulation board) |
| Top thickness | At least 1/2 inch (WSOC team rules) | 1/2–5/8 inch (ACA regulation board) |
| Front height | 2.5–4 inches (WSOC team rules) | 3–4 inches (ACA regulation board) |
| Rear height | Approximately 12 inches, with ±0.5 inch stated by WSOC (WSOC team rules) | 12 inches (ACA regulation board) |
| Hole diameter and position | 6 inches; center 9 inches from the top and 12 inches from either side (WSOC team rules) | Not stated on the ACA regulation board page linked above. |
For a build that fits both organizations’ overlapping ranges, use a 48-by-24-inch top at 1/2-inch thickness, a 6-inch hole positioned at the shared center coordinates, a 3–4-inch front height, and a 12-inch rear height. The ACA page linked above does not state hole placement, so use WSOC’s placement only if it suits your governing rules.
Materials and tools
For two boards, prepare two plywood tops and enough framing lumber to build a rigid support under each. A practical approach in Lowe’s plan uses 1-by-3 framing with 1/2-inch plywood tops; the dimensions of the finished boards should follow your selected specification. WSOC calls for smooth plywood at least 1/2 inch thick. These are plan-specific construction choices, not a requirement that every board use 1-by-3 framing.

- Two plywood panels, each cut to the chosen board dimensions.
- Framing lumber for two stable frames and legs.
- Wood screws and suitable woodworking tools for cutting, fastening, and sanding.
- A tape measure, straightedge, square, pencil, and compass or other method to mark a 6-inch circle.
- A jigsaw or 6-inch hole saw for the opening; Kreg describes both options.
- Sandpaper or a sander for the top, edges, frame, and hole edge.
Build the boards
1. Cut and frame the tops
Cut both plywood panels to the same length and width. Build a rectangular frame beneath each top, fastening the plywood securely so it is supported and does not shift during play. Lowe’s describes a 1-by-3 frame under 1/2-inch plywood; adapt the framing to your materials while keeping both boards consistent and stable.
2. Mark the hole
On each top, mark the center point 9 inches down from the top edge and 12 inches in from either side. This places the hole on the board’s centerline. Use a compass or a 6-inch template to draw the circle, checking the measurements on both panels before cutting. Kreg’s plan uses this same center layout.

3. Cut the opening cleanly
Cut the 6-inch opening with a hole saw or jigsaw. With a hole saw, Kreg recommends cutting partway through from one face, turning the panel over, and completing the cut from the opposite face to reduce tear-out. If using a jigsaw, drill a starter hole inside the marked circle, then cut carefully along the line. Sand the cut edge smooth.
4. Fit and attach the legs
Install legs so the front and rear heights meet the dimensions in your chosen ruleset. Check the height with the board assembled and resting on a level surface; measure from the ground to the playing surface at the front and rear. Make the legs fold or detach only if that feature does not compromise stability, and ensure matching boards sit at the same heights.

5. Sand and inspect the playing surface
Sand the top, edges, frame, and hole edge until they are smooth. WSOC calls for a very smooth surface without blemishes that could disrupt play. Before finishing or using the boards, check for splinters, protruding fasteners, loose joints, rocking, and mismatched dimensions.
Decide whether to build regulation size or scale down
Use the stated regulation dimensions if consistent play or compatibility with a ruleset matters. Kreg notes that its plan can be scaled down when standard dimensions are not important, which may suit limited storage or casual play. A smaller board changes the playing setup, so do not describe it as regulation-size; scale both boards equally and place the hole proportionally only if you are comfortable departing from the stated specifications.
