Best Brass Keyed Padlock Series for Gates, Sheds and Other Uses

Compare four brass keyed padlock series by construction, intended use, ratings, weather exposure and fit—without treating manufacturer claims as an independent security test.

There is no single brass keyed padlock series proven to offer “maximum security” for every application. For common gates, lockers and sheds, compare the ABUS 85 and ABUS 75; consider Kasp 125 for a medium-security application, and ABLOY PL341 when its manufacturer-stated physical-attack features and Grade 3 designation suit the need. The right choice depends on the exact model, its fit with the hasp or chain, exposure to weather and the theft risk at the access point.

Which brass padlock series fits your application?

Brass describes the body material, not the security of the complete lock. The cited product information shows substantial differences in shackle construction, locking features, intended use and model ratings. These are manufacturer descriptions, not results from an independent head-to-head test.

Series Documented features Best reason to consider it
ABUS 85 Solid brass body; hardened steel shackle with Nano Protect plating; automatic locking and precision pin cylinder. Multiple sizes and long-shackle versions are listed; some variants have stainless-steel shackles. Broad range of configurations for general use; check exact model dimensions and security guidance.
ABUS 75 Solid brass body; hardened steel shackle with Nano Protect corrosion protection; reversible key, double bolting, self-locking and non-corrosive internal components. Consider for doors, gates, cabinets, lockers, toolboxes, basements, sheds and switchgear; ABUS names the 75IB variant for coastal and port areas.
ABLOY PL341 Hardened boron-steel shackle; hardened, free-spinning protection plate; shackle secured at both ends with hardened stainless-steel ball bearings. ABLOY identifies it as Grade 3. A distinct option to evaluate when physical-attack resistance is a priority. Its grade is not directly comparable to ABUS’s security-level scale.
Kasp 125 Solid brass body. Models 20 mm and larger have hardened steel shackles; some smaller versions have a 15 mm brass shackle. Double bolting and anti-pick features are specified for particular sizes. Consider for the medium-security uses named by Kasp, while checking the construction and features of the exact size.

How to choose the right size and configuration

Start with the hasp, chain or fitting the lock must pass through. A shackle that is too thick will not fit; one with excess clearance may leave more room for leverage. Compare the lock’s stated shackle diameter and opening height and width, along with body width and depth, against the available space. The cited series pages do not provide one shared dimension set for every variant, so use the exact model’s specifications.

  • Match the risk to the product’s intended use. ABUS publishes its own security levels and risk guidance; ABLOY gives PL341 a Grade 3 designation. These systems should not be treated as equivalent without a supported conversion.
  • Check shackle material and protection. Do not assume every size in a series has the same shackle material or features. Kasp’s smaller 125 versions are an example of a model-specific difference.
  • Account for exposure. Nano Protect is specified on the cited ABUS 85 and 75 descriptions. ABUS identifies the 75IB for coastal and port areas; confirm that the exact variant is suitable for the conditions where it will be used.
  • Plan for key access. The ABUS 75 has a reversible key. ABUS also says keyed-alike service is available through trade for some ABUS 85 arrangements; confirm availability and compatibility with the seller.
  • Assess the whole barrier. A padlock cannot make a weak hasp, chain, gate or door secure. The cited product information does not test the strength of those components or their installation.

What the stated ratings do—and do not—tell you

ABUS lists its 85 family at Security Level 6/10 on its USA series page. It also lists DIN EN 12320 Class 2 and SBSC Class 1 specifically for model 85/50. For the 75 family, ABUS lists Security Level 7/10 on its USA series page, while the 75/30 page shows Security Level 5/10; DIN EN 12320 Class 2 and SBSC Class 1 are listed for EC 75/40. These claims apply to the named family or model as specified, not to every brass padlock.

ABLOY’s Grade 3 designation for PL341 uses a different stated classification. The available manufacturer information does not establish a conversion between that grade and ABUS’s security levels, nor does it establish a tested winner among these products. Use the maker’s guidance for the exact model and intended application rather than ranking unlike labels as if they shared one scale.

Practical recommendations by use

Gate, shed or general outdoor storage

Compare ABUS 85 and 75 variants against the fitting’s clearance and the exposure at the site. ABUS names gates and sheds among the 75’s applications; the 85 offers multiple sizes and long-shackle variants. For coastal or port settings, ABUS specifically points to the 75IB. Confirm the exact model and dimensions before buying.

Locker, cabinet or toolbox

The ABUS 75 is explicitly listed for lockers, cabinets and toolboxes, and its reversible key may be useful where key orientation matters. Kasp describes 125 as a medium-security series, but its shackle material and features vary by size, so check the specification of the particular model.

When physical-attack resistance is a key concern

Evaluate ABLOY PL341’s boron-steel shackle, free-spinning protection plate, double-ended shackle retention and Grade 3 designation against the threat and the strength of the fitting it will secure. Those are manufacturer-stated attributes; the available information does not establish how it performs relative to the other named series in independent testing.

Manufacturer claims and durability limits

ABUS describes the 85 as “The classic brass 85 padlock is ideal for various applications.” That broad description does not mean every size is appropriate for every risk or exposure. The cited product pages do not establish a service-life figure, theft-rate outcome or independent durability comparison. Treat corrosion-protection and construction descriptions as model-specific product information, not a guarantee of a particular lifespan.
