It can be useful for rolls, firm tomatoes, fruit, and dry sausage; it is not the retractable, replaceable-blade utility knife used on construction sites. The WÜSTHOF models below offer distinct listed blade lengths and constructions, but the available product information does not establish a tested overall winner.
What a serrated utility knife is for
Serrations grip and saw through an outer layer instead of pressing straight down through the food. Victorinox says its serrated blades cut crusts without crushing the soft inside, and names pastries, cakes, and tough-skinned fruits as uses. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent test.
WÜSTHOF describes its serrated utility knives for rolls, firm tomatoes, fruit, and dry sausage. These are practical examples of foods where a toothed edge may help preserve a softer interior while cutting through a skin or crust.
How the listed models compare
| Model | Listed blade and construction | Listed hardness | Manufacturer-described uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| WÜSTHOF Classic Serrated Utility Knife | 5.5 inches; forged | 58 HRC | Rolls, firm tomatoes, fruit, and dry sausage |
| WÜSTHOF Gourmet Serrated Utility Knife | 6 inches; non-forged | 56 HRC | Rolls, firm tomatoes, fruit, and dry sausage |
| WÜSTHOF Classic Ikon Serrated Utility Knife | 5.5 inches; forged | 58 HRC | Rolls, firm tomatoes, fruit, and dry sausage |
These are specifications and use descriptions from the manufacturers’ listings, not comparative performance results. The listed Classic and Classic Ikon are forged, while the Gourmet is non-forged; the information does not show that either construction is categorically better. Compare handle shape, hand fit, and current price directly, since the listed specifications do not provide an ergonomic or value test.

Choose a utility knife or a bread knife by the job
A short serrated utility knife
Choose this category for smaller foods such as tomatoes, fruit, rolls, or dry sausage, where a shorter blade is convenient. The listed WÜSTHOF blades are 5.5 or 6 inches long.
A bread knife
For a full loaf or broader baking tasks, a longer bread knife may be more appropriate. Victorinox discusses a bread and pastry knife for baked-goods-related jobs; its guidance does not suggest that a short utility knife replaces that category. Consider the size of the food and the length of cut you need to make.

Care for a serrated utility knife
WÜSTHOF recommends hand washing its Classic model, drying it immediately, avoiding abrasive sponges and soaking, storing it safely, and avoiding hard cutting surfaces such as metal, glass, or bamboo. Its Gourmet guidance says regular honing is essential and advises sharpening as needed with a whetstone, sharpening steel, or handheld knife sharpener. Follow the instructions for the specific model you own.

The product pages provide model specifications and manufacturer-described uses, but they do not establish which knife cuts best, lasts longest, or offers the best value. Treat construction and hardness figures as comparison points, not proof of a performance ranking. Check the current listing for availability and price, which can change.
