The best organic lawn fertilizer is the one that supplies nutrients your soil actually needs, at a rate and time suited to your grass—not simply the one labeled “premium.” Start with a soil test, check the full N-P-K analysis, and follow the product label and local fertilizer rules. The available evidence does not establish a current head-to-head winner or value ranking, so the product example below is a documented option, not a tested recommendation.
Start with a soil test, not a product claim
A soil test can show whether fertilizer is needed and which nutrients to supply. Without that information, applying a product because it is organic or marketed as premium may add nutrients the lawn does not need. University of New Hampshire Extension recommends basing fertilizer use on soil-test results or following label directions; its guidance on testing and organic lawn care is available in “Is organic fertilizer better for lawns?” and “Organic Turf: Frequently Asked Questions.”
Pay particular attention to phosphorus. A fertilizer chosen to meet nitrogen needs can also add phosphorus, which may accumulate in soil and contribute to water pollution when it runs off. Maryland Extension advises using a zero-phosphorus fertilizer unless a laboratory soil test identifies a phosphorus deficiency. That is Maryland guidance; check the rules and recommendations where you live. See Maryland Extension’s organic lawn care guidance and its Maryland turf fertilizer recommendations.
How to read the fertilizer label
The three numbers in an N-P-K grade indicate the product’s nitrogen, phosphate, and potash analysis. Compare the full grade with your soil-test needs and use the label’s application rate; the grade alone does not tell you how much product to spread. A lower-analysis product may require more material by weight to supply a given amount of nutrient. Iowa State University Extension discusses label interpretation and this tradeoff in its lawn fertilizer guidance, last updated June 24, 2025: “What type of fertilizer should I use on my lawn?”

Organic fertilizers vary in composition and release behavior. Soil microorganisms generally need to break down organic materials before roots can use their nutrients, so release may be gradual; that does not mean every product behaves the same way. Compare the listed analysis and directions rather than assuming all organic formulations are interchangeable. For background, see Iowa State’s guide to selecting and using organic fertilizers and UNH Extension’s organic turf FAQ.
Guidance can be jurisdiction-specific. UNH Extension’s May 2020 article summarizes New Hampshire limits of 0.9 pounds of total nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application and 3.25 pounds per 1,000 square feet per year. These are New Hampshire figures, not universal application targets or a substitute for checking current state rules. Iowa State’s recommendation that complete lawn fertilizers contain at least 35 percent of total nitrogen as water-insoluble nitrogen is also specific to the guidance on that page, not a universal requirement for all products or regions.

A documented product example: Suståne’s four-step program
Suståne’s manufacturer describes a seasonal program with four formulations. Their analyses and stated uses can help illustrate how products may differ by intended timing and purpose; they do not show that every lawn needs four applications or that these products outperform alternatives.
| Manufacturer’s named formulation | N-P-K analysis | Stated program timing or use |
|---|---|---|
| Spring Weed & Feed | 9-0-0 | Spring |
| Early Summer Turf Maintenance | 9-0-2 | Early summer |
| Late Summer Turf Starter and Overseeder | 4-6-4 | Late-summer turf starting and overseeding |
| Winterizer | 8-0-4 | Winterizer formulation |
The program and its application information are published by the manufacturer on its Turfgrass 4 Step Lawn Care Program page. Suståne says the program should be modified for turf type and growing zone. Before choosing a formulation, check its current label, your soil-test results, and local rules; the product schedule is not a universal prescription.

Compare products by fit, not by the word “premium”
When more than one product matches your lawn’s needs, compare the details that affect its use:
- Soil-test match: Does the analysis supply a nutrient the test identifies as needed? Avoid phosphorus unless the test and local guidance support it.
- Analysis and label rate: How much nutrient does the product deliver at its stated rate, and how much material must you apply?
- Intended use: Is the formulation meant for established turf, seeding, or overseeding?
- Timing and grass type: Does the label’s timing suit your grass and growing region?
- Coverage and handling: Check the labeled coverage and the amount of product you will need to spread, especially with lower-analysis formulations.
- Rules and verification: Follow the current label and local fertilizer rules. If organic certification matters to you, verify the product’s current listing rather than relying on a general claim.
The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) reviews products intended for certified organic production and lists accepted products. An OMRI listing concerns review against organic standards; it does not establish that a product is best for a home lawn or that your soil needs its nutrients. Check current status through OMRI.

Set realistic expectations for a beautiful lawn
Fertilizer is only one part of lawn care, and it cannot make every site support a flawless lawn. Soil conditions, grass type, climate, and maintenance all affect what is realistic. Maryland Extension’s organic lawn care guidance discusses practical lawn management and supporting pollinators. Use fertilizer to address demonstrated nutrient needs, not as a substitute for a suitable plan for your site.
