Best Pool Filter Media: Sand, Glass, Zeolite and DE Compared

#20 silica sand is a common starting point for residential sand filters, but the correct media depends on the filter’s approved grade and fill quantity. Compare glass and zeolite only when your model permits them.

For many residential sand filters, the straightforward starting point is #20 silica pool filter sand—but the right media is the grade and quantity specified for your exact filter. Recycled glass and zeolite may be alternatives when the manufacturer allows them; DE media belongs in a DE filter, not as a drop-in for a standard sand tank. No media choice alone guarantees clear water.

What is the best pool filter media for a sand filter?

For many residential sand filters, #20 silica pool filter sand is the conventional baseline. A buyer guide names AquaQuartz-50 as one example, while another reports a 0.45–0.55 mm grain size for its #20 sand example; that range is not a universal specification for every product or filter. See ClearPoolCalc’s 2026 buyer guide and Skim & Soak’s media guide.

Before buying, check the filter manufacturer’s instructions for the approved media grade and the amount required. A product being sold for pool filtration does not establish that it is suitable for your filter model. Matching the specified grade and fill quantity is more dependable than choosing by a broad claim that one material filters better.

How do the main filter media options compare?

Media Filter type or use What is established What to check
#20 silica sand Common media for residential sand filters A buyer guide describes it as a common default and names AquaQuartz-50 as an example. A separate guide reports 0.45–0.55 mm for its example sand, not every product. Manual-specified grade and quantity; product label and filter compatibility.
Recycled glass Possible alternative in some sand filters Hayward UK discusses polished recycled glass as a possible media option. A supplier catalog lists pool glass media, but does not establish universal compatibility or comparative performance. Whether the exact filter model permits it; required grade and fill amount.
Zeolite Marketed for pool filtration, including some sand-filter applications ZEO, Inc. advertises ZeoSand at 2–5 microns and approximately three times sand’s dirt capacity; these are vendor claims, not independently established results across filter designs. Zeolite Australia publishes separate filtration and backwash-water claims. Model approval and the supplier’s specified use. Treat performance figures as claims from the named supplier.
DE DE filter systems A buyer guide distinguishes DE media from media used in sand tanks. Use only with a DE filter system and its instructions; it is not a sand-tank replacement.
Fiber media Some products are marketed for sand tanks A buyer guide includes it as a possible category, but that does not establish compatibility with a particular filter. Exact filter manual and product label before use.

Is glass filter media better than sand?

It may be an option for a compatible sand filter, but the available information does not establish a universal performance winner. Hayward Pool Products UK lists polished recycled glass among possible media options; its guidance is not a blanket approval for every sand-filter model. Check the instructions for your own filter before substituting glass. Hayward’s UK FAQ is useful for understanding the option, not for overriding model-specific instructions.

When comparing glass with sand, consider the filter’s approved media, purchase cost, the amount and weight required, cleaning or backwashing needs, and replacement interval. The available sources do not provide independent, controlled head-to-head results that settle those trade-offs for all pools.

Can you use zeolite instead of pool filter sand?

Some suppliers market zeolite for replacing sand or glass in applicable filters, but approval depends on the filter and product. ZEO, Inc. advertises ZeoSand filtration at 2–5 microns and approximately three times sand’s dirt capacity, while noting that values vary with media and system conditions. These are the manufacturer’s figures, not independent comparative findings. ZEO, Inc.’s comparison does not establish that every zeolite product or filter will deliver those results.

Zeolite Australia also publishes a 2-micron filtration claim and a claim of reduced backwash-water use versus sand for its residential product. Those are supplier claims, not independent findings or guarantees for other products and systems. Zeolite Australia’s residential-pools page describes its product application. Confirm the exact model’s compatibility and the supplier’s loading instructions before switching.

What should you compare before choosing?

  • Compatibility: Verify the filter model’s approved media types, grade and fill amount in its manual.
  • Filtration claims: Identify who made each micron or dirt-capacity claim. A manufacturer’s specification is not automatically an independent test or a result that applies to every filter.
  • Cost and quantity: Compare the cost of the amount your filter actually needs, rather than the price of a single bag or package.
  • Handling: Account for the quantity and weight of media you must move and load.
  • Maintenance: Check the required backwashing or cleaning practices and the media’s stated replacement cycle for your system.

Buyer guides can help identify product categories, but their comparisons are not necessarily test results. Skim & Soak explicitly states that it did not run comparative filtration tests. The available figures and performance comparisons here should therefore be read according to their source: guide examples as guide examples, and supplier specifications as supplier claims.

Does DE media work in a sand filter?

No—not as a drop-in replacement in an ordinary sand tank. DE media is intended for a DE filter system. If you have a sand filter, use only media the manufacturer approves for that model; if you have a DE filter, follow its own manual and media requirements.

How to choose and buy the right media

  1. Identify the filter type and model. Read the label on the filter or its manual so you do not confuse a sand filter with a DE system.
  2. Find the media specification. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the permitted media grade and required quantity. Do not assume that a product’s general pool-use label confirms fit.
  3. Compare compatible options. If the manual allows alternatives such as glass or zeolite, weigh their cost, handling, maintenance and replacement requirements alongside attributed performance claims.
  4. Check product instructions before loading. Confirm the selected product’s grade and installation directions match the filter instructions.

AquaQuartz-50 is one example named in a buyer guide, not a universal recommendation or a verified current listing. Availability and compatibility need to be checked with the seller and the filter manufacturer.
