Check the footprint, thickness, and clearance
Choose a standing area that fits your stance and workstation, then check that the mat will not obstruct a door, create a troublesome transition, or interfere with nearby equipment. Published examples range from compact desk-sized mats to a longer option: SitOnIt lists a 30 × 20-inch mat, while Xsystems offers an XL size of 180 × 60 cm. Thickness also varies—from COBA’s 14 mm to WellnessMats’ maker-stated ¾ inch—so compare the actual dimensions rather than treating PU as a single comfort level.
Compare surface, grip, and edges
Surface patterns range from smooth to bubble-textured. Underside descriptions also differ: SUN-FLEX specifies a high-traction underside and FlexiSpot describes a grooved, skid-proof bottom. These are product descriptions, not a guarantee that a mat cannot move. Beveled edges, as specified by SUN-FLEX and WellnessMats, may be relevant where people walk around the workstation; assess the transition in its actual location.

Read care and warranty terms for the specific model
Care claims are not interchangeable. COBA says its mat can be brushed, vacuumed, or wiped with a wet cloth; Xsystems describes its mat as washable and water-repellent. Follow the chosen model’s instructions and environmental limits. Compare warranty and load-capacity statements only where the maker publishes them, and confirm current terms directly with the manufacturer.

Use a mat as one part of a standing-work setup
OSHA’s Sewing Station Design eTool recommends: “Provide anti-fatigue mats (Fig. 6) for workers who are standing for prolonged periods.” Its guidance also recommends sit/stand workstations and frequent short breaks to stretch or change position. OSHA’s food-service guidance identifies prolonged standing on hard floors as a contributor to knee, hip, and back disorders and lists mats or shoes as possible measures. Guidance for electrical assembly tasks likewise includes posture changes and regular breaks alongside mats.
These recommendations support treating a mat as one possible ergonomic measure, not as proof that a particular product prevents pain or injury. The available product specifications do not quantify improvements in fatigue or establish which mat performs best. Consider a mat together with breaks, posture changes, a sit/stand option, a stool where appropriate, and workstation adjustments.
