The best plants for a small pond are a restrained mix matched to its depth and your local climate: at least one suitable submerged plant, a compact marginal or emergent plant, and—only if there is enough room—a dwarf waterlily. Leave open water, check mature spread before buying, and make sure each species is appropriate where you live.

Choose plants by pond zone, not by appearance alone

Pond plants fill different roles at different depths. A balanced planting scheme can provide underwater cover, soften the edges and add some surface shade without letting growth take over. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) puts the practical point simply: “So it’s important to choose plants to suit your size, depth and style of pond.” (RHS, “Choosing Pond Plants”)

  • Submerged plants grow below the surface and provide underwater cover. They produce oxygen during daylight, but that production is not constant through the night.
  • Emergent plants send foliage above the water and add vertical structure; their stems can also provide routes for insects emerging from the pond.
  • Marginal plants grow at the shallow edge, softening the pond’s outline and providing cover. Check mature spread, since some can expand vigorously.
  • Floating plants rest on the surface and offer shade and habitat. Thin them if they crowd out open water.

Depth and mature spread matter more than a “small” label. Confirm the plant’s required water depth and expected width, then compare those figures with the actual planting shelf, water depth and surface area available.

UK-native examples to consider

The Natural History Museum lists the following UK-native examples for small ponds. They are options to investigate, not a list to plant all at once. Their suitability still depends on your pond’s location, depth, light and maintenance needs.

Role UK-native examples What to consider
Submerged oxygenators Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum), willow moss (Fontinalis antipyretica) and water starwort (Callitriche stagnalis) Choose at least one suitable submerged plant for underwater cover. Do not assume oxygen production continues at the same rate overnight.
Emergent plants Water mint (Mentha aquatica), lesser spearwort (Ranunculus flammula), lesser water plantain (Baldellia ranunculoides) and water forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides) Add upright foliage and structure at the water’s edge.
Marginals Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia), greater bird’s-foot trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus) and water avens (Geum rivale) Useful for softening an edge, but check mature spread and contain growth where needed.
Floating Frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae) Optional surface cover; thin it if it leaves too little open water.

These examples are specific to the UK, not a planting prescription for gardens everywhere. Outside the UK, check local native ranges, climate suitability and invasive-plant restrictions before buying. A native, non-native or cultivated plant can still spread invasively. The RHS advises preventing plants from escaping into streams and recommends quarantining new purchases for several weeks to reduce the risk of introducing contaminants. (RHS, “Choosing Pond Plants”; Natural History Museum, “FAQ about creating and maintaining a garden wildlife pond”)

Keep open water and make room for growth

There is no single exact coverage target for every pond. The RHS suggests covering roughly half the pond surface with plants; the Natural History Museum says a small container pond should ideally be about 40% planted. These are approximate recommendations for different contexts, so use them as guidance rather than targets to hit precisely. Keep open areas and expect coverage to change as plants grow through the season. (RHS, “Choosing Pond Plants”; Natural History Museum, “FAQ about creating and maintaining a garden wildlife pond”)

Laguna Sturdy Plastic Round Planting Basket, 10-Inch
  • Important Water Features: Aquatic plants play an important role in ponds. They add aesthetic dimensions, perform practical functions such as provide food, shelter and shade for fish, and help keep water’s biological balance.
  • Ideal for Water Planting: Laguna Planting Baskets are an easy and convenient way to put plants in ponds. The lattice design allows the free flow of water so that plants receive abundant water supply and helps prevent the compaction of roots.
  • Durability: Made of sturdy plastic material, the baskets are tough enough to be placed at the bottom of ponds and light enough to float at the surface, where they are ideal for protecting the roots of floating plants from fish who like to bite on them.
  • Additional Features: All baskets include convenient handles for easy grasping.
  • Measurements: 10” diameter by 7.5” height

For submerged oxygenators, the RHS says four to five bunches per square metre can be sufficient. That guidance should not be applied directly to a tiny container pond without scaling it down. The RHS also warns that too many oxygenators may contribute to low oxygen at night in summer, which can harm fish. (RHS, “Aquatic plants: planting”)

Will a dwarf waterlily fit?

Possibly—but “dwarf” does not mean suitable for every small pond. The RHS growing guide gives dwarf and small waterlilies a typical spread of 30–60 cm (1–2 ft) and a typical water depth of 30–45 cm (12–18 in). A separate RHS plant list places miniature waterlily cultivars in 10–30 cm (4 in–1 ft) of water. These are different ranges of guidance, not one universal depth rule; check the exact cultivar’s label and nursery instructions before buying. (RHS, “How to grow waterlilies”; RHS, “Choosing Pond Plants”)

The RHS lists miniature options including Nymphaea odorata var. minor, N. tetragona, N. ‘Pygmaea Helvola’ and N. ‘Pygmaea Rubra’. Treat these as candidates to check, not guarantees that a plant will suit your pond: cultivars differ, and many waterlilies can outgrow a compact space.

Waterlilies prefer still water and full sun for flowering. The RHS recommends planting in an aquatic basket with peat-free aquatic compost or heavy clay-based loam, beginning with the crown under 15–25 cm of water and lowering the basket in stages as leaves grow. Its guide says a dwarf cultivar can fit a 2-litre basket; most waterlilies need a larger 5–10-litre basket. Do not choose a larger cultivar just for visual impact if its spread or depth requirements exceed the pond’s capacity. (RHS, “How to grow waterlilies”)

Plant in containers and set the right depth

In smaller ponds, containers can help manage plant size and spread. Use an aquatic basket sized for the particular plant; not every aquatic species necessarily needs one. The RHS recommends medium-to-heavy loam without fertiliser or herbicide, or a proprietary peat-free aquatic compost. A thin layer of grit or fine gravel can help stop soil washing out. (RHS, “Aquatic plants: planting”)

  1. Check the plant label. Confirm the required depth and whether the measurement refers to water above the crown or the plant’s position in the pond.
  2. Choose a suitable basket and medium. Match the basket to the plant’s expected growth and use an aquatic growing medium rather than ordinary enriched garden compost.
  3. Start at the specified depth. If a deep-water plant is new or the pond is too deep at the shelf, raise its container on bricks.
  4. Lower gradually where appropriate. For waterlilies, the RHS recommends lowering the basket in stages as leaves grow; follow the cultivar’s instructions.

Depth advice can vary by species and region. For example, Colorado State University Extension’s PlantTalk Colorado guide gives 8–12 inches of water above the crown for waterlilies and 1–4 inches for most marginal plants. That is regional guidance, not a replacement for the selected plant’s label or supplier advice. (Colorado State University Extension / PlantTalk Colorado, “1026 – Water Gardens: Planting Aquatic plants”)

Plan the pond edge and water for wildlife

A shallow edge makes a useful planting zone and can help wildlife reach or leave the water. The Natural History Museum notes that shallow and deep sections serve different amphibian needs and that a deeper section can reduce the risk of a pond drying out. It recommends rainwater for a wildlife pond because nutrients in tap water can encourage algae. Plants alone cannot guarantee clear water or a particular wildlife outcome. (Natural History Museum, “FAQ about creating and maintaining a garden wildlife pond”)

When selecting plants, compare the available depth and surface area with mature spread, growth rate, role, light and climate needs, local native status, invasive restrictions and the effort needed to contain and maintain them. For a waterlily, also check cultivar width, flowering conditions and the water depth available above its basket.
