The right pin vise is the one whose collet securely accepts your bit or small stock and whose handle suits the way you need to turn it. For model-making, Tamiya’s Fine Pin Vise D-R (74112) is specified for 0.1–3.2 mm drill bits. Starrett lists separate 0–4.8 mm and 0.25–5.1 mm ranges for its 162 and 240 models. These are model-specific manufacturer specifications, not a universal capacity standard; check the shank diameter and collet details before choosing.
Pin vise options compared
A pin vise is a hand-operated holder for turning small bits or other small tools by hand. Starrett lists uses including drills, taps, reamers, scribers, wire and small files; Tamiya describes its 74112 as a tool for making precision holes in and modifying scale models. The options below are compared by stated range, collet design and handling features—not by independent performance testing.

How to choose a pin vise
1. Match the collet to the bit or stock
Start with the diameter of the bit shank or other material you intend to hold—not just the diameter of the hole you want to drill. Check that dimension against the stated capacity and collet arrangement for the specific model. For example, Tamiya specifies 0.1–3.2 mm bit compatibility for the 74112, while Starrett gives different ranges for its 162 series and 240. Do not assume that similarly named tools use interchangeable collets or share the same capacity.
2. Choose handling features for the work
Consider how you plan to turn the tool. Tamiya lists a rotating end grip with built-in ball bearings on the 74112. Starrett notes a reduced-size handle on the 162 series for rotation between thumb and finger. General Tools’ older catalog describes two double-ended collets for the 75801. These are design details, not evidence that one tool is more precise, comfortable, durable or resistant to bit slippage than another.

3. Confirm that a hand tool is appropriate
Pin vises are hand-operated tools. Starrett lists multiple small-tool holding tasks and states: “NOTE: These tools not recommended for powered use.” Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model; do not treat a pin vise as a powered-drill chuck unless its maker explicitly supports that use.
What to verify before buying
- Exact model: Capacity figures apply to the named model or series, not every pin vise from that manufacturer.
- Shank diameter: Measure or confirm the bit’s shank size, then check that it falls within the stated fit range.
- Collet details: Confirm which collet is supplied and how it adjusts. If you are considering the General Tools 75801, check current documentation because the available catalog description is older.
- Intended operation: Confirm that hand turning suits the job and observe any manufacturer warning against powered use.
Which one fits your project?
For scale-model work, Tamiya identifies the 74112 for precision holes and model modification and states a 0.1–3.2 mm bit range. For other small-tool holding jobs, Starrett describes broad uses for its pin vises; choose between the 162 series and 240 by checking the relevant stated range and handling or collet details. If a multi-range collet arrangement is the priority, General Tools’ 75801 is a possible candidate, but verify its current specifications rather than relying on an older catalog alone.

One scale-modeling discussion asks about using PCB drill bits with a 3.2 mm shank. That is an individual requirement, not evidence that all pin vises accept such a shank. Check the exact vise’s capacity and collet fit before buying or attempting to use the bit.
