The category name needs context: the WashG1 is a dedicated wet cleaner for hard floors, not a conventional vacuum. It does not clean carpets, so the award is not a claim that it can replace an all-purpose vacuum.
What Tech Advisor chose—and why
Tech Advisor’s award article, written by Deputy Editor Emma Rowley and published December 30, 2024, selected the Dyson WashG1. Rowley praised its ability to mop and pick up dirt at the same time, including on the backward stroke, and highlighted cordless operation. The article also said its non-suction design makes it less likely to clog than rivals. Those are Tech Advisor’s stated reasons for its choice, not independent measurements.
In its awards overview, published the same day, Tech Advisor said its 2024–25 selections looked back over the previous 12 months and covered 13 categories. It listed the WashG1 as the vacuum-category winner. Read Tech Advisor’s WashG1 award article and the awards overview.
Is the Dyson WashG1 a vacuum?
No. Dyson describes it as a dedicated wet floor cleaner for hard floors. Rather than using suction, it uses two motorized, counter-rotating microfiber rollers to clean wet and dry debris. Separate tanks hold clean and dirty water, while a debris tray collects solid material. Dyson’s US WashG1 product page explains its intended use.

This product scope matters when interpreting the award. The WashG1 may be relevant if your home has substantial suitable hard flooring and you often deal with spills or dirt that needs washing up. Dyson says it is not designed for carpets; a separate vacuum is still needed for carpets and other tasks such as upholstery or car interiors. For a home where one machine must handle those jobs as well as hard floors, the WashG1 does not fill the whole role.
How it compares with the runners-up
Tech Advisor named the Samsung Bespoke Jet AI first runner-up and the Shark Detect Pro second runner-up. Its article describes the Samsung as a cordless vacuum with an AI mode and self-emptying Clean Station, and the Shark as a compact cordless vacuum with floor and dirt detection and an optional Auto-Empty Stand. These are editorial descriptions, not results from a standardized comparison test.

The products have different roles, so their award placements do not establish a universal performance ranking. When comparing them for your home, consider whether you need carpet pickup or wet hard-floor washing, how often you clean up spills or dried stains, which accessories are included, how each machine docks and empties, and the maintenance it requires. Check current local pricing and availability separately; the award articles do not establish what a product costs now.

Dyson’s owner guidance says to empty and rinse the clean- and dirty-water tanks and debris tray, use the self-clean function, and check the rollers after a few uses. Rollers can be washed with warm water and detergent and need to dry thoroughly before they are used again. Dyson lists model-specific replacement microfiber rollers; check the machine’s model and region before buying a part. Dyson’s WashG1 support and parts information provides care and replacement guidance.

Dyson gives an approximate roller life of 25 hours of use, depending on usage. This is manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed replacement interval. In its May 13, 2024 US launch announcement, Dyson also stated that the WashG1 has 26 hydration points and that each of its clean- and dirty-water tanks holds 27 oz.
