Best Oil for a Small Electric Motor: Choose by Bearing Type

The best oil for a small electric motor depends on its bearing. Learn when to use specified oil, when not to oil, and why turbine oil is not universal.

There is no single best oil for every small electric motor. First identify the bearing and check the motor’s manual or lubrication plate. Add oil only if the manufacturer specifies an oil-lubricated bearing, and use the stated grade, quantity and service interval. Many motors have sealed or permanently lubricated bearings that should not be oiled.

Do small electric motors need oil?

Some do; many do not. A motor’s lubrication system depends on its bearing design, so a general-purpose oil recommendation can be wrong even for two motors of similar size.

  • Oil-lubricated sleeve bearing: May have an oil port, reservoir or oil ring. Follow the manufacturer’s specified oil and servicing instructions.
  • Sealed or permanently lubricated bearing: Usually arrives factory-lubricated and needs no added oil. Mobil explains that sealed-for-life bearings are prepacked and do not require in-service lubrication: Mobil.
  • Grease-lubricated bearing: Requires the specified grease and procedure; oil is not a substitute. Baldor distinguishes grease-lubricated antifriction bearings from oil-lubricated sleeve bearings in its motor manual: Baldor manual.

Closed 2Z and 2RS bearings, for example, are described as greased for life in Hoyer’s manual: Hoyer manual. A small Nidec DC fan is an example of a sleeve-bearing design with oil enclosed around the axle, but its product information does not mean every small motor is user-serviceable: Nidec product page.

How to identify the right lubrication system

  1. Disconnect power or isolate the equipment, following its service procedure.
  2. Find the motor model and look for its manual, nameplate or lubrication plate.
  3. Check whether the bearing is oil-lubricated, grease-lubricated, sealed or described as maintenance-free.
  4. If oil is specified, follow the exact grade, amount, fill level and interval given for that motor. Do not overfill or oil an unapproved location.
  5. If the bearing is sealed or factory-lubricated, do not add oil unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs you to.

Which oil should you use if the manual calls for oil?

Use the exact oil specification in the motor’s documentation. The reviewed manuals show why there is no universal viscosity for small motors: recommendations vary with motor design, operating speed and ambient conditions.

PermaOil 284 Electric Motor Bearing Oil – Lubricant for Motor Bearings, Bushings & Oil Reservoir Systems (1 oz Bottle)
  • Long lasting lubricant for electric motor bearings and shafts to reduce friction, eliminate squeals, and help free up stiff or slow-starting motors while leaving a protective layer against rust and corrosion
  • Proven performance at scale—used in billions of motors and trusted by 500+ OEMs to lubricate their motors
  • Ideal for HVAC repair and maintenance, including bearings, shafts, and other critical moving components—PermaOil helps restore performance and minimize costly downtime
  • Chemically engineered in-house for professional-grade reliability
  • Stops wear before it starts – Advanced anti-wear protection helps extend motor life by reducing heat, friction, and component degradation over time
  • For specified large flameproof motors, ABB’s 2023 manual gives mineral-oil examples of ISO VG 32 above 1800 rpm, ISO VG 46 between 1200 and 1800 rpm, and ISO VG 68 at or below 1200 rpm. These values apply to the equipment covered by that manual, not small motors generally: ABB manual.
  • Baldor’s guidance for its sleeve-bearing motors selects oil by ambient temperature and speed, and specifies a good grade of turbine-type oil with rust, foam and oxidation inhibitors. It cautions against automotive oils or additives unless specifically recommended by the oil manufacturer: Baldor manual.
  • An SPX Cooling Technologies fan service manual describes light or medium mineral oil, such as SAE No. 10, for the covered sleeve-bearing motors and recommends turbine oil rather than automotive crankcase oil: SPX manual.

These are equipment-specific examples, not interchangeable specifications. SPX’s recommendation is for the fan equipment covered by its manual; it should not be treated as a blanket instruction for every small motor.

Is turbine oil suitable for a small motor?

It can be, but only when the motor’s manufacturer specifies a compatible turbine oil. A product listing cannot establish compatibility with every bearing or motor. For example, The Home Depot Canada lists SUPCO Zoom Spout Turbine Oil, model 468326, as a 4 oz paraffin-based, non-gumming oil with an extendable 7½-inch spout, for uses including motors, blowers, appliance pumps and high-speed shaft bearings: The Home Depot Canada listing. Check the motor documentation before using it.

Why not use automotive engine oil by default?

Automotive crankcase oils are not an automatic substitute for the oils specified for motor bearings. Baldor warns against unapproved automotive oils or additives, and SPX recommends turbine oil rather than automotive crankcase oil for the motors covered by its service manual. Follow your motor manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming a familiar engine oil will suit the bearing.

What to check before servicing

  • Use the specified lubricant grade and viscosity, not a generic “motor oil” label.
  • Check whether the manual ties the oil choice to speed, temperature, orientation or service conditions.
  • Use only the stated fill quantity and location; the reviewed manuals do not establish one amount or service interval for all small motors.
  • Do not try to revive a sealed-for-life bearing by adding oil unless its manufacturer directs you to do so.
