Houseplants are not proven to remove significant amounts of pollution in ordinary homes, and candles add particles rather than purifying air. When those steps are not enough, choose filtration for the pollutant you need to address: a portable HEPA cleaner for airborne particles, or a properly sized gas-absorbing filter for certain gases and odors.
What “natural air purifier” means—and what works
“Natural air purifier” is not a precise technical category. It can refer to reducing pollution at its source, bringing in outdoor air, or using plants as a supposed filter. These approaches do not perform the same job. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies source reduction and ventilation with clean outdoor air as the most effective ways to improve indoor air; filtration can supplement them. EPA: Improving Indoor Air Quality and EPA: Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
Reduce sources first
Where practical, stop or reduce activities that create indoor pollution. Cooking, some cleaning activities, and combustion can contribute particles to indoor air. Burning candles is one example of a source that can be eliminated; it is not an air-cleaning method. EPA: Sources of Indoor Particulate Matter.
Ventilate when outdoor air is clean
Opening windows or doors can dilute indoor pollutants when outdoor air is clean and weather and safety conditions permit. It is not a universal fix: during outdoor smoke or pollution, or when conditions make opening windows unsuitable, bringing in outside air may not help.

Plants are for living spaces, not proven room-scale filtration
Houseplants may be appealing for their appearance, but EPA says there is currently no evidence that a reasonable number of plants remove significant quantities of pollutants in homes and offices. Results from sealed-chamber demonstrations should not be treated as proof that a few potted plants will clean a lived-in room. The EPA-indexed review reaches the same practical distinction: Potted plants do not improve indoor air quality: a review and analysis of reported VOC removal efficiencies. Overwatering can also leave damp soil that promotes microorganisms of concern to people with allergies.
Choose filtration for the pollutant you need to address
Air cleaners are not all-purpose pollution removers. A device’s effectiveness depends on the pollutant, the filter or other technology, and how much air it treats. EPA cautions that air cleaners cannot remove all pollutants. EPA: Will Air Cleaners Reduce Health Risks?

Airborne particles: look at HEPA filtration and CADR
A portable HEPA air cleaner is a plausible option for airborne particles. Compare its clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the room or area it is intended to serve, and check the manufacturer’s recommended coverage. For an open-plan space, account for the full area being treated; EPA advises considering a larger unit when ceilings are higher than eight feet. Higher fan speeds and longer operation generally filter more air, but can increase noise and the burden of running the device. Check the product’s own specifications for those operating details. EPA: Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
Gases and odors: seek gas-targeted sorbent media
HEPA filters capture particles; they are not, by themselves, a solution for gases or many odors. For those, look for activated carbon or another absorbent specifically designed for the target gas. EPA notes that gas-filtering portable cleaners do not have a widely used performance rating system and that a substantial amount of filter material matters. A thin carbon layer alone does not establish broad or reliable VOC and odor removal. EPA: Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

Central HVAC filters: check system suitability
A furnace or central HVAC filter can treat air that passes through the system, but the filter must be suitable for that system and its intended use. The EPA guidance cited here does not establish one MERV rating or compatibility rule for every home. Check the equipment documentation or consult a qualified HVAC professional before changing filter type.

| Central HVAC filter | Air circulated through a compatible heating or cooling system | Compatibility with the system and intended use | One rating or filter type cannot be assumed suitable for every system |
What to avoid—and how to assess product claims
Do not use candles as purifiers
Burning candles release particulate matter, so lighting one does not clean indoor air. If candles are a particle source in your home, stopping that source is the more direct step. EPA: Sources of Indoor Particulate Matter.

- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
Avoid ozone-generating cleaners in occupied spaces
EPA says no federal agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces. Do not choose an ozone-generating air cleaner for a room people occupy. EPA: Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
Be wary of broad “purifies everything” claims
Match the claim to the mechanism: particle CADR and room area for particle filtration; identified sorbent media for gases. EPA does not certify or recommend particular home purifier brands. A brand name or a general “natural” label does not establish performance for your room or pollutant.

A practical order of operations
- Identify likely sources. Consider indoor activities such as cooking, cleaning, combustion, and candle burning.
- Reduce or remove what you can. Source control is the first step in EPA’s approach to improving indoor air.
- Ventilate selectively. Use outdoor air when it is clean and conditions allow; avoid assuming open windows are beneficial during outdoor smoke or pollution.
- Choose filtration by pollutant. For particles, compare a portable cleaner’s CADR with the area served. For gases or odors, look for target-appropriate absorbent media.
- Check installation and use requirements. For an HVAC filter, verify system compatibility. For a portable unit, follow its coverage and operating guidance.
