The best microwave for heating food is one that fits its intended spot, has enough cooking power for your usual portions, and is easy to use safely. Start by measuring the installation location and deciding between a countertop model and an over-the-range unit; then compare wattage and usable interior space. Extra modes are worth paying for only if you will use them.
Choose the placement before comparing features
Microwave formats solve different kitchen constraints. A countertop model is easier to place and generally offers a wider range of sizes, capacities, wattages, designs, and prices. An over-the-range model frees counter space, but it must be installed and can be harder for some people to reach.
| Format | Best fit | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Countertop | Flexible placement or a broad choice of configurations | Uses counter space; verify the footprint and required clearances in the manual. |
| Over-the-range | A kitchen where preserving counter area is a priority | Requires installation; check mounting, reach, and ventilation instructions for the specific model. Its exhaust fan is not automatically equivalent to a range hood. |
Consumer Reports’ May 1, 2025 buying guide describes these category differences and notes that some over-the-range models vent outside. Confirm the ventilation arrangement and installation requirements in the model’s documentation before choosing one.
Measure the space and check clearances
Measure the available width, height, and depth, including any space needed for the door to open. Compare those measurements with the microwave’s exterior dimensions, not just its advertised capacity. Leave the clearances specified by the manufacturer; requirements vary by model, particularly for over-the-range installation.

For an over-the-range unit, check the cabinet and mounting requirements as well as who will install it. If reaching above a cooktop would be awkward or unsafe for anyone using the kitchen, a countertop location may be the more practical choice.
Compare cooking wattage and usable space
Wattage affects cooking time
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance states: “The higher the wattage of a microwave oven, the faster it will cook food.” Cooking times also vary with oven power and efficiency. Check the microwave’s label or serial plate, owner’s manual, or manufacturer information for wattage. If package directions assume a more powerful oven than yours, the stated time may not be enough; use appropriate food-safety checks rather than relying on time alone.

Capacity figures can be misleading
Advertised capacity describes interior volume, but does not necessarily tell you how much usable space there is for the dishes you own. Consumer Reports reported that usable capacity in the models it tested was about 50 percent of manufacturers’ claims in its May 1, 2025 buying guide. That is an observation about its tested models, not a measurement that applies to every microwave.
Before buying, consider the shape and size of the plates, bowls, and containers you typically heat. When possible, compare the interior dimensions and turntable size, or check whether your usual dish can fit and rotate without hitting the walls.

Decide whether extra features matter for reheating
For everyday heating, prioritize straightforward controls and a size and wattage that suit your routine. Defrost settings, sensor programs, convection, or other modes may help with particular tasks, but additional features do not guarantee more even reheating. Give weight to reliable comparative heating and defrosting tests when available, and choose extra modes only if they match how you cook.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 coverage provides current lab-tested category context; rankings can change, so consult its current results rather than relying on an older list. No single model is established as best for every kitchen, and current model specifications and availability need to be checked before purchase.

Reheat food evenly and safely
Microwave heating can leave cold spots where harmful bacteria may survive. Use a vented microwave-safe cover, arrange food evenly, and stir, rotate, or turn it partway through when appropriate. Add a little liquid if needed. A turntable helps move food during heating, but does not eliminate the benefit of stirring or turning it. Let food stand after heating so the temperature can even out.
- Place food in a microwave-safe dish and arrange it evenly; cover it with a microwave-safe lid or wrap, leaving a vent.
- Heat the food, stirring or rotating it partway through when appropriate.
- Allow standing time. For reheated cooked food, USDA FSIS advises heating leftovers until steaming hot, then checking with a clean food thermometer that they have reached 165 °F.
Time alone is not a reliable safety check because microwave power, food quantity, and heating patterns vary. A thermometer is especially useful when food safety matters.

Use cookware approved for microwave heating
Follow both the microwave manual and the cookware’s labeling. USDA FSIS identifies utensils labeled microwave-safe, heatproof glass, glass-ceramic, and some paper products as options, subject to their labeling and instructions. It warns against metal pans, foam-insulated containers, and cold-storage tubs not approved for cooking. Do not assume a container is safe just because it held food in the refrigerator or freezer.
Inspect the door and follow the manual
The FDA says microwave ovens in good condition do not leak microwave energy at levels of concern. Its safety page describes the federal leakage limit as 5 milliwatts per square centimeter at approximately 2 inches from the oven’s surface over the appliance’s lifetime. This is a regulatory limit, not a reason to treat ordinary use of an intact appliance as hazardous.
Inspect the door, hinges, latches, and seals. If any are damaged, or the door does not open or close properly, stop using the appliance and contact the manufacturer. Follow the owner’s manual for operation, cleaning, cookware, clearances, and installation.
