The best large package drop box is one whose usable interior and deposit opening fit the parcels you actually receive—and whose delivery method works for the carriers serving your address. Before buying, distinguish a standalone home parcel box from a USPS curbside mailbox and a shared parcel locker: they have different access, placement, and installation needs. No ordinary residential package box should be assumed to be USPS-approved or usable by every carrier.
Start with the right kind of package box
Standalone residential parcel box
A freestanding or mounted package box is intended to receive deliveries at one home. Check the exact model’s interior dimensions, opening size, deposit path, retrieval method, anchoring instructions, and exposure rating. The available sources do not establish that a typical residential box meets USPS mailbox standards or that every carrier will use it.
USPS curbside mailbox
A curbside mailbox is a mail receptacle subject to USPS guidance and standards. USPS Standard 7C specifies a 16 × 13 × 7 inch gauge for testing expanded-capacity curbside mailboxes. The gauge must fit into and out of the mailbox while its doors close without interference. This is a test for that mailbox category, not a minimum capacity requirement for private package drop boxes. Shared parcel locker
Apartment, neighborhood, and commercial parcel-locker systems are shared-use installations, not simply larger versions of a homeowner’s box. They may require coordination among the property owner, builder, postal service, and local authorities. USPS publishes separate guidance for centralized mailbox and parcel-locker systems.

How to compare large package drop boxes

Understand carrier access before choosing a lock
A lock can limit casual access, but it does not by itself solve delivery access. USPS Standard 7C states: “IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MAIL CARRIERS TO OPEN MAILBOXES THAT ARE LOCKED, ACCEPT KEYS FOR THIS PURPOSE, OR LOCK MAILBOXES AFTER DELIVERY OF THE MAIL.” That statement concerns USPS mail carriers and mailboxes; it is not a rule for every parcel carrier or a guarantee about how a particular carrier will handle a delivery. Before installation, ask the carriers that serve your address whether they can deliver to the product as designed. Do not assume a carrier will have a key, open a locked compartment, or use a drop box simply because it is large. If your plan depends on carrier access to a locked shared system, confirm who supplies and manages that access.

Apply USPS placement advice only to curbside mailboxes
For curbside mailboxes, USPS advises placing the bottom of the mailbox or mail entry 41–45 inches above the road surface and setting it 6–8 inches back from the curb. It recommends a stable support that can bend or fall away if struck, giving a 4 × 4 inch wood support or a 2-inch-diameter standard steel or aluminum pipe as examples, and says not to bury the post more than 24 inches. These are USPS curbside-mailbox recommendations, not installation specifications for a standalone parcel box. Consult USPS mailbox placement guidance.
USPS advises contacting the postmaster when there is no raised curb and showing custom curbside mailbox plans to the postmaster. For a private parcel box, follow the product’s installation instructions and check applicable local requirements rather than borrowing curbside-mailbox measurements.

Product example: a shared outdoor locker
The US Post Company product page for the Florence vital 1590-T2 describes a four-door, pedestal-style outdoor locker for residential neighborhoods, apartment complexes, and commercial developments. The page calls it weather-resistant and says its carrier access door is prepared for a USPS arrow lock installed by local postal officials. These are claims about that specific product on its seller page, not proof of a general feature or universal USPS approval. View the Florence vital 1590-T2 listing.
Because it is a multi-compartment shared locker, it is an example of a different use case from a single-household drop box. Check the current product dimensions, materials, installation requirements, and availability directly before relying on the listing.

When a USPS PO Box may fit the need better
If the underlying need is secure USPS package handling rather than a delivery box at home, consider a PO Box. USPS offers multiple box sizes, subject to local availability. When a package is too large for the assigned box, USPS says the customer may receive a pickup slip for counter collection or retrieve the parcel from a secure parcel locker when one is available. Keep the box usable after installation
For curbside mailboxes, USPS recommends an annual checkup: tighten loose hinges, address rusty or loose parts, replace faded or missing house numbers, and keep the path clear. That advice is specific to curbside mailboxes; for a standalone parcel box, use the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and inspect the lock, doors, mounting, and weather protection as appropriate for the product and site.
