If you have a horizontal sliding window, look for an air conditioner specifically labeled for a slider, casement, or casement-slider window. A conventional window AC may not fit or secure safely. Before choosing a model, compare its manual’s opening requirements with your window, then size its cooling capacity to the room.
What is a horizontal window air conditioner?
The term usually refers to a room air conditioner made to install in a horizontally sliding or casement window. These units have different fit requirements from standard window ACs designed for double-hung windows. ENERGY STAR defines a casement-slider room air conditioner as one designed for a sliding or casement window with an encased assembly width of 15.5 inches or less. That category definition is not a universal opening measurement, and it does not mean every unit will fit every slider window. Check the exact model’s installation manual.
How to choose one that fits your window
Measure the actual opening and compare it with the model’s specified minimum and maximum window dimensions. Also check any stated wall-thickness limits, support requirements, and installation-kit instructions. Do not assume that a familiar BTU rating or a similar-looking model guarantees compatibility.
- Window compatibility: Confirm the model is designated for slider or casement windows and that the opening clears the cabinet.
- Installation requirements: Check the manual for support, electrical connection, drainage, tilt, weather sealing, and clearance instructions.
- Comfort and controls: Compare documented sound ratings, airflow direction, fan speeds, remote or timer functions, and maintenance indicators.
- Current status: Verify availability, warranty, and certification for the exact model and generation in your region.
Size cooling capacity to the room
Start with the floor area of the room or connected space you want to cool. For a rectangular room, multiply its length by its width; convert inches to fractions of a foot before calculating. ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner guidance assumes an 8-foot ceiling and gives these starting points:

ENERGY STAR recommends adjusting its charted capacity for room conditions: reduce it by 10% for heavy shade, increase it by 10% for very sunny rooms, add 600 BTU/h for each regular occupant beyond two, and add 4,000 BTU/h for a unit used in a kitchen. These are program guidelines, not guarantees of a particular cooling result.
More capacity is not automatically better. ENERGY STAR warns that an oversized unit can cool a room before adequately removing humidity, leaving the air cool but damp-feeling. Its guidance states: “An oversized air conditioner costs more to purchase, wastes energy and does not provide better cooling.”

Compare efficiency and features carefully
Compare efficiency using the measure and product category that apply to the exact unit. ENERGY STAR’s room AC criteria page lists CEER thresholds of 12.8 for casement-only and 14.0 for casement-slider categories; confirm the currently applicable specification and category before treating either figure as a qualification threshold. Check the current ENERGY STAR listing rather than assuming that certification carries over from a related model or an older generation.
For comfort, look for documented sound ratings and airflow controls. ENERGY STAR describes variable-speed technology as modulating compressor output rather than repeatedly operating only at full capacity or switching off. Whether a specific unit has this feature, and its sound performance, must be confirmed in that model’s specifications.

Installation: follow the model’s instructions
A slider-window AC must be secured and sealed according to its own manual and the window configuration. ENERGY STAR advises following the instructions and using the insulation material supplied with the unit. Its comparison guidance says improper installation can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole.
- Read the exact model’s manual and confirm that it approves installation in your window type.
- Check that the opening clears the cabinet and that any required support bracket or other support is approved for that installation.
- Follow the manufacturer’s requirements for electrical connection, drainage, tilt, clearances, and weather sealing.
- Use supplied insulation as directed. Add sealing or support products only if they are compatible with the model and window.
What the cited Frigidaire examples show
Frigidaire Canada’s support pages document two slider/casement models. Both are marked discontinued, so they are useful as examples of the specifications to check—not as current purchase recommendations or a ranked shortlist.
