Air fresheners can cover smoke smell with fragrance, but they do not remove smoke pollution or make a smoke-filled room safe. For a portable device that can help with airborne smoke, choose an air purifier sized for the room with a strong tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) and a substantial activated-carbon or other gas-removal filter. To get rid of the smell more completely, also stop the smoke source and clean contaminated surfaces.
Do air fresheners get rid of cigarette smoke?
No. A scented spray, plug-in, gel, or diffuser adds fragrance; it does not remove the particles and gases in cigarette smoke. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, “Smoke from one cigarette can stay in a room for hours.” It also warns that “Opening windows and using fans, air conditioners, air purifiers, air fresheners, and ventilation systems does not get rid of secondhand smoke.” (CDC, “Preventing Exposure to Secondhand Smoke in the Home,” May 15, 2024.)
That distinction matters: a room can smell less smoky after fragrance is added while smoke-related pollution remains. Air freshener is a masking option, not a smoke-removal method or a substitute for preventing exposure.
What works on airborne smoke and odor?
Smoke includes both particles and gases, and no single filter type necessarily handles both. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) distinguishes mechanical particle filtration from gas removal: a particle filter can trap smoke particles, while activated carbon or another gas-removal medium may reduce some gases and odors. (EPA, “Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home”.)
#1 Best Overall
- Neutralizes smoke, pet, food, cigarette and other smoke and mal odors
- Professional-strength, long-lasting, mountain fresh scent. Leaves air crisp and clean
- For home, restaurant, & bar, auto & garage
- Specialized Professional Grade Formula
- Not for use on: Upholstery, fabrics or painted, plastics or rubber surfaces.
For smoke particles: compare tobacco-smoke CADR
For a portable air purifier, check its tobacco-smoke CADR and match it to the area of the room it will serve. CADR measures particle-cleaning performance, not odor-gas removal; a high tobacco-smoke CADR reflects the device’s ability to remove smaller particles. Account for open floor plans and high ceilings when deciding whether the listed room guidance fits your space. A purifier serving only one room will not clean a whole home.
For lingering odor: look for substantial gas-removal media
Choose a purifier with a meaningful amount of activated carbon or another filter specifically designed for gases if odor reduction is a priority. A thin carbon-coated layer may not provide the same capacity as a substantial bed of media. EPA notes that effectiveness depends on having a large quantity of gas-filtering material, and that there is no widely used performance-rating system for gas filters. That makes carbon amount and the maker’s explanation of the filter more useful to inspect than a CADR number when judging odor treatment.
Rank #2
- 7 oz large Spray
- Enzyme formulated Spray
- Attacks and removes smoke odors
- Great For use in your home, office, car, RV or anywhere else!
- Great For cigars, cigarettes & pipes
Neither a particle filter nor a carbon filter makes a purifier a guarantee of complete or permanent odor removal. CADR does not certify gas performance, and smoke that continues to enter the room or remains on surfaces needs separate attention.

- CLEANS THE AIR YOU BREATHE : OZIUM sanitizes and deodorizes the air, temporarily reducing bacteria and germs that cause unpleasant odors, leaving the air smelling fresh.
- MULTI-USE ODOR ELIMINATING AIR SANITIZER: OZIUM eliminates stubborn odors and offensive everyday smells found in bathrooms, musty closets, cars, kitchens, trash cans, offices, sweaty shoes and more.
- TRUSTED & VALIDATED: Trusted for over 50 years, OZIUM was originally developed to combat airborne bacteria and germs in hospitals and is clinically-proven to eliminate unpleasant odors, not just mask them.
- MORE THAN JUST AN AIR FRESHENER: OZIUM air sanitizing spray isn’t your typical home or car air freshener, it makes smells disappear by reducing odor-causing bacteria and germs.
- Room fit: Compare the product’s room guidance with the room’s size, ceiling height, and whether it opens into other areas.
- Tobacco-smoke CADR: Use this to compare particle-cleaning capacity for the intended room; it is not a gas or odor rating.
- Gas filter: Look for substantial activated carbon or another medium explicitly designed to capture gases and odors. No widely used gas-filter rating system makes direct comparisons straightforward.
- Replacement filters: Confirm that compatible replacements are available and check the manufacturer’s replacement guidance before buying.
- Usable fan speed: Higher speeds and longer operation generally increase filtration, but can also mean more noise and faster filter use. Consider whether you will actually run the unit at the needed setting.
- Ozone: Avoid ozone generators and devices that intentionally produce ozone for occupied spaces. For smoke events, EPA recommends choosing air cleaners certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which produce little or no ozone. (EPA, “Indoor Air Filtration”.)
EPA does not certify or recommend particular air-cleaner brands, so these criteria support selection rather than a brand ranking.
Why to avoid ozone and some ionizers
Do not use an ozone generator as a room deodorizer. EPA describes ozone as a lung irritant and says ozone concentrations within public-health standards have little potential to remove indoor contaminants. EPA also says no federal government agency has approved ozone generators sold as air cleaners for use in occupied spaces. (EPA, “Ozone Generators that are Sold as Air Cleaners”.)

- Eliminates Smoke and Pet Odors
- Great For Use In Your Home, Office, Car, RV or Anywhere Else!
- Specially formulated enzyme designed to attack and remove odors
- Spray into the air or any circulating vent
- Made in USA
Some ion generators may remove certain small particles, but EPA says they do not remove gases or odors; some devices can emit ozone at harmful levels. (EPA, “What are ionizers and other ozone generating air cleaners?”.) A device advertised as “odor eliminating” is not a safe choice on that basis alone.

When odor persists, treat it as a source and surface problem as well as an airborne one. EPA identifies removing the pollution source and bringing in clean outdoor air, when appropriate, as effective general steps for improving indoor air. The CDC says the best protection from secondhand smoke is not to smoke or allow smoking in a home or car. (EPA, “Air Cleaners and Air Filters in the Home”; CDC.)
Best Value
- Odor Elimination Technology: Eliminates bad odors at the source using advanced formula technology that neutralizes airborne and in-carpet smells
- Simple Application: Easy to use spray application allows for quick and convenient odor treatment on multiple surfaces
- Versatile Surface Use: Suitable for use on carpets, rugs, upholstery, clothing, bedding, and car interiors at home or office
- Long-Lasting Freshness: Provides a fresh, long-lasting scent while absorbing odors rather than masking them with the 32 oz bottle size
Smoke residue can also remain on surfaces; EPA discusses exposure from contaminated surfaces as thirdhand exposure. (EPA, “Secondhand Smoke and Electronic-Cigarette Aerosols”.) If the source has stopped but the smell remains, clean affected surfaces and materials appropriate to their care instructions. A purifier can address some airborne particles and gases while it runs, but it does not clean residue embedded in furnishings or building materials.
In homes where smoke exposure continues, an air cleaner is not a substitute for stopping the source. Opening windows or using a purifier may help with ventilation or filtration in some circumstances, but neither makes ongoing secondhand smoke exposure safe.
