- Use the floor maker’s guidance for any follow-up, including whether the surface should be rinsed or dried.
doTERRA’s instruction is to “Dip mop or rag in bucket and clean tile or linoleum floors.” Its page also says the recipe can be used as a countertop cleaning spray; that does not broaden its stated floor-surface scope.

Is this mixture suitable for every kind of floor?
No universal recommendation is supported here. The recipe names tile and linoleum only. Do not assume it is suitable for hardwood, laminate, natural stone, a sealed floor or a particular finish. Check the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions first, and stop if the surface shows an adverse change.
The CDC’s environmental-cleaning guidance says to choose products that will not damage the target surface and to prepare solutions according to manufacturers’ instructions and recommended dilutions. That guidance is for healthcare environmental cleaning, not an endorsement of essential-oil mixtures for household floors. It notes that neutral detergents are selected for most procedures in that context.

Does an essential-oil floor cleaner disinfect?
The cited recipe does not demonstrate that it disinfects, and a natural scent is not evidence that a mixture kills germs. Do not rely on this recipe when disinfection is required. The EPA notes that many general-purpose cleaning tasks do not typically require disinfectants; that point does not validate an essential-oil disinfectant claim. When disinfection is needed, use a product labeled for that purpose and follow its directions.
What should you know about pets and people?

The ASPCA warns that concentrated essential oils can be dangerous for pets, with exposure concerns depending on concentration and formulation. It does not assess this floor recipe, so the recipe should not be described as pet-safe. Keep animals away from wet floors and follow the cleaner’s directions. The Council of Europe’s 2024 guidance on essential oils in cosmetic products describes sensitisation potential through skin exposure or inhalation. That is general context, not an evaluation of floor-mopping use. Avoid unnecessary contact with concentrated oils, use products as directed, and do not make a mixture stronger on the assumption that more is better. CDC guidance likewise cautions that dilution affects effectiveness and that incorrect preparation can introduce unnecessary risks.
