Most products sold as “bamboo curtains” are actually bamboo or woven-bamboo window shades, including Roman shades. The best choice depends on how much light and privacy you need, how the shade will mount, and whether its lift and care requirements suit your room. Retailer specifications vary by model, so compare the exact shade rather than assuming every bamboo weave behaves the same way.
What to check before choosing bamboo curtains
- Light and privacy: Light-filtering fabric can still reveal shapes, and an unlined weave may provide less coverage than you expect. Check the product’s description and lining options for the specific model.
- Mounting and fit: Inside and outside mounts require different measurements. Confirm the selected shade’s sizing rules and the depth needed for an inside mount.
- Lift and hardware: Mechanisms differ. Examples include a cordless Roman shade and a shade with a concealed handle; included hardware and mounting options also vary.
- Appearance: Bamboo is a natural material, so color, grain, texture, shape, and thickness can vary. A sample may not exactly match the finished shade.
- Care: Follow the maker’s instructions for the exact product. Some shades call for dusting and spot cleaning; others are wipe-clean only.

Choose lining for the room’s privacy and light needs
“Light filtering” does not mean blackout, and it does not guarantee the same privacy across products. Pottery Barn says shapes may be seen through its lined Rue shade, while West Elm describes its unlined shade as filtering light while providing privacy. UNICURT gives a specific 20–30% light-blocking figure for its unlined Sisko model. These descriptions are product-specific, so neither the word “unlined” nor “light filtering” alone tells you exactly what a shade will look like from outside.
For bedrooms, street-facing windows, or rooms where you need stronger coverage, look for a privacy or blackout liner and confirm that it is available for the exact shade you plan to buy. If you prefer an unlined natural weave, review the maker’s privacy description and consider how the window will be used after dark.

Measure for the mounting style
Use the instructions for the chosen product; measurements and allowances are not universal. For the Pottery Barn Rue shade, the retailer gives these directions:
- For an inside mount, measure the opening width at the top of the casing. Select a shade at least 3/8 inch narrower than the inside opening.
- Measure the height in three places. Record the longest measurement.
- For an outside mount, measure the area you want the shade to cover. Pottery Barn recommends extending the shade 2 inches beyond each side for optimum light control and privacy.
- Check inside-mount depth and the product’s available sizes. For example, UNICURT states that the Sisko requires frame depth greater than 2½ inches for an inside mount.
Before ordering a custom shade, verify whether the retailer’s width and height entries refer to the finished shade or the opening, and follow its ordering instructions. Do not apply one brand’s deductions or overlap recommendations to another product.

Account for lift style and natural variation
Lift mechanisms are product-specific. The West Elm example is cordless, while the product examples elsewhere may use different operating designs; check the listing and hardware details rather than assuming all bamboo Roman shades work alike.
Because bamboo is natural, variation in grain, texture, thickness, and shape is expected. A sample can help assess color and general appearance, but it may not precisely match every part of a finished shade.
